SNK surprises with online PS2 lineup

PS2 rereleases of classic titles to use MultiMatching Broadband service.

SNK Playmore today announced a slate of online titles, all set to release before the spring of next year, that will play over the MultiMatching Broadband Service, a third-party online solution for the PS2 that launched in September 2003. The service was developed through a partnership between broadband provider KDDI and Capcom. The first game to use the service, King of Fighters '94 Re-Bout, will release this December. Five other games will follow in 2005.

The news came as a surprise because SNK Playmore, only two days before the opening of the show, had announced that the publisher's "future" game lineup, after the release of Re-Bout, would be programmed specifically for online play. By "future," many industry followers assumed SNK meant new titles, not a slate of classic ports.

The announcement that went out today noted SNK's aims in supporting the MultiMatching service. Rather than the in-depth, time-expensive massively multiplayer role-playing games that dominate the online gaming scene in Japan, SNK hopes to provide an online experience that can entertain even with light, sporadic use.

A complete list of the titles that will use the MultiMatching Broadband Service follows; all are ports from the company's NeoGeo hardware.

King of Fighters '94 Re-Bout

King of Fighters '95-'97 3 in 1

King of Fighters '98-'00 3 in 1

Garou Mark of the Wolves

Bakumatsu Roman Gekka no Kenshi 2 in 1 (Last Blade)

Twinkle Star Sprites (tentative title)

3 games in one sounds like something SCEA may let SNK get away with in the US, but the one most deserving of a US release, MotW, is currently going to be a standalone. Well, the option to import is still there...but hopefully it will come here. MotW is believed by many to be the finest fighter SNK has produced.

Re-Bout is supposed to be more of a remake than just the same thing, and to use high-res sprites.

Metal Slug 3D is also in the works, but I have nothing on that but a few blurry screen shots that show nothing, but it's going to come out. So right now, yes for Japan and we don't know for the US. Although I'm skeptical because of 4 and 5...and I don't know about Advance yet.

I'm skeptical about MS Advance since SNK doesn't seem to be able to make any *new* good games--Chaos anyone?

Omg online Twinkle Star Sprites for PS2?! Holy shit that would be the greatest thing ever. Too bad there's no chance in hell it would ever get a US release.

I think it looks alright.

Besides, it's not even out in Japan yet. OMGDAGRAFFIXSUXXOR5d00d!! :P

I'm more concerned if it still plays fugly. I don't know if it would be worth picking up as a standalone release, but maybe for the US release they can knock off the 94 for in the title and double-pack it with MotW. That'd rock.

LICKY GLAUBER?!?? HAHAHAHA!!

It's an SNK game for a home console, I can tell you right now it will be broken. If this is truly a remake of 94 it will have the god awful charging system.

OMGDAGRAFFIXSUXXOR5d00d!!

Yeah...cause I only care about graphics.

SNK Playmore is actually capable of updating their KoF sprites? That's news in itself.

I'll probably pick up the '98-'00 3-in-1 and wait on the others.

*bump* for a tidbit--the the "E-card" aspect of Metal Slug Advance is confirmed to be an in-game system using things called "E-cards." It's not e-reader compatible. Tips and Tricks explained it.

Also, in the same issue it was mentioned that somebody bought the Japanese PS1 import of MKII (yeah, never heard of it either) for 175 bucks on Ebay...now who would do that and why? :P

$175 for MK II PSX is not surprising, especially for a new copy. They usually go for that much, I've seen them go higher actually. I paid 120 for mine.

What exactly does it say? Like why was it brought up in the first place?

Tn'T has a regular section where they highlight winning bids for rare/high demand games on Ebay.

Gee, you only paid $120. I had my suspicions it might have been you... :P

That's not as insane as $340 (or so) for Mega Man X3 SNES, though. Too bad I didn't have a few nutjobs like that checking it out when I had it up for auction--I'd only gotten $95 for it. Well, it was the cartridge only, though...

That is Mortal Kombat 2 right? Could'nt the person wait for Midway Treasure vol 2 collection? That must be one hardcore collector.

That's probably the deal--hell, I never knew such an animal existed. Is it the same port as the Saturn version, or arcade perfect?

There's been no KoF 2004, oddly, although they've put out Neo Wave, Maximum Impact, and I've heard of something called Battle Colosseum.

Is BC the US name for Neo Wave, or something different?

Maybe they've come to the conclusion that the annual edition thing is major overkill.

MAT2 isn't the same thing as the PSX port. It's all about being a collector. MK II on PSX was only released in Japan and is very rare, that's why it goes for so much.

It's actually really bad though. Yes, it is based on the Saturn port.
