Bruiser Chong 0 Report post Posted September 29, 2004 I'll defend him, but not as a closer. He was lights out as a set-up man, but has been real bad in one-run games all season. Anyone know if Alou's got an option on his contract? I'd hope today was just another example of why he shouldn't be brought back next season. Invest the money in Beltran. Guest Staravenger Report post Posted September 29, 2004 Michael Kay just made fun of the Cubs but really didn't by mocking how they lost 4 of 5 games to the Mets and Reds.

Guest Staravenger Report post Posted September 29, 2004 Yankees rally to lead 5-3 off releivers. Matsui home run, Sierra walked I believe, Cairo with a single, Jeter with a single, and A-Rod with a triple.
sfaJack 0 Report post Posted September 29, 2004 As far as I know, Alou is a free agent with no option for next year. How many rally-killing, lameass double plays can one team hit into in a single game? My God. The Cubs are bailed out if both the Astros and Giants somehow lose tonight, but with Clemens on the hill I don't see that happening. The Cubs MUST win their last four, and I don't care what they have to do to win them. 3-1 is NOT an option. At least they'll have Prior, Wood, Zambrano, and Maddux lined up to save their sorry asses. Let's hope those four can live up to their billing.
Guest Smell the ratings!!! Report post Posted September 29, 2004 Alou has a team option that is sure not to be taken, as his salary is heinous. Do we know if the Braves are going to tank or not yet?

Guest Staravenger Report post Posted September 29, 2004 Big win. We win tonight, the divison is over. Technically, no. If the Yanks win and Sox lose, the Yankees are up 4 games. If my memory is correct, that means the Red Sox need to win every game and Yankees need to lose every game to force a tie. Incase of a tie, the Red Sox are AL East winner because they beat the Yankees in the seasons series total.
Bruiser Chong 0 Report post Posted September 29, 2004 The Braves will surely pull no punches, as they'll have no mercy on the team that saw to their early exit in last season's postseason. I agree, though, unless the Cubs win the rest of their games, they'll have the rest of October and all winter to think about how they dropped the ball big time in the closing weeks of the 2004 campaign. Bruiser Chong 0 Report post Posted September 30, 2004 This must be so satisfying for the Cards. The Cubs were the main reason they didn't make it to the playoffs last year and while the Cubs had their own faith in their hands, the Cards are trying to be the icing on the cake, as they seem to be laying down against the Stros for the third night in a row. Clemens takes the hill, so what's LaRussa doing? Benching Pujols, Walker, Womack and Sanders. While the Cards have deserved a break before postseason, you gotta believe this is one last double bird from them to the Cubs.
Guest Staravenger Report post Posted September 30, 2004 How about those big bad Twins? The bullpen blows Game 1, and the team overall is playing like shit for Game 2. Pedro Martinez having trouble again, down 6-3 in the bottom of the 5th. And now LEIBER is blowing it for NY. Me and my big message typing keyboard.
sfaJack 0 Report post Posted September 30, 2004 Can you really blame LaRussa? I'd probably do the same thing if I were him. What incentive do they have to win the game, other than winning it just for the sake of winning? How can the Astros even consider picking up Biggio's option for next season? He's a horrible outfielder (as further evidenced by his attempt to "catch" the ball on the play the Cardinals scored their runs) and he has an OBP of .283 since August 1. They don't really have a spot for him either, which makes it that much easier a decision. "Quest for 3,000 Hits" or whatever he wants to try for next year or not, they just can't bring him back for $3 mil.

Bruiser Chong 0 Report post Posted September 30, 2004 Astros/Cardinals is tied at 4 in the 7th, and Rangers/Angels is tied at 5 in the 6th. The Cards lead came from a two-run homer from Rolen off the first pitch after Clemens threw a bit of a hissy fit for not getting a close call in the last at-bat. Suppan had been solid until the seventh, where he walked the leadoff man and eventually gave up two runs.
