Guest GreatOne Report post Posted October 4, 2004 The irony is that the man who traded for Jeff Cirillo and signed Bret Boone to that wonderful deal all in the span of less than a month still remains in a consulting capacity. But I've learned in other baseball threads that it's HIGHLY UNFAIR! to place any blame whatsoever on, oh the guys who take up a good chunk of the $95 mil payroll so whatever.................... Getting rid of Carlos Guillen hurt the team, Scott Spiezio was a flop, they lost Mike Cameron, etc. They also had a sub-par season from Bret Boone, Edgar Martinez aged, and Rafael Soriano missed most of the season. Hell Rey Ordonez was a defensive whiz not too long ago, should the Mets have overpaid HIM? Scott Spiezio: Now Jeff Cirillo, part II. Congratulations. Rich Aurilia: Hitting his first AL home run off Pedro, good. The fact that it was May 28, bad. Raul Ibanez: Maybe we can actually admit that his rise in numbers in KC WASN'T due primarily to AL Central pitching. And to Bavasi's credit: FINALLY somebody paying attention to the farm system, although it was too late, and I don't think our T-town pitchers look quite as good now. Getting Olivo, Reed, and the kid that'll be in Tacoma next year for Freddy was a good deal. Guardado was a good signing, although I'm really at a loss to when the injury actually happened (somehow I'm not buying into the infamous Dave Berg at-bat that there wasn't something going on). So I'll give him about a C total--not including the 'nothing-for-nothing (Colbrunn for McCracken, Cirillo for Jarvis) deals. Guest GreatOne Report post Posted October 5, 2004 Cameron had 30 homers this year--shocker--yet still only hit . 231 and had a .322 OBP. His HR totals with the M's: 19, 25, 25, 18. Now what indication would give anybody that he'd jump to 30 homers if he were wearing an M's uni this year? BTW his RBI total in '04: 76, same as last year. So keeping him, no matter how many GG's he wins--wouldn't have been the answer either. Otherwise no one would be whining about being in 3-2 games all the time. Hell Rey Ordonez was a defensive whiz not too long ago, should the Mets have overpaid HIM?. Cameron's a career .248 hitter so nobody is expecting much from him with the bat BA wise. His OBP was indeed awful(.21 lower then his career average of .340) however his SLG was at .479, a career best. His OPS as a result was the 4th highest of his career. He also set a career high with 30 HR's and had a 79% steal rate. Cameron led the Mets with 5.9 Win Shares in the field and 12 Win Shares with his bat. I'd say he was pretty valuable to the Mets. The Mets Team ERA was 4.10, no doubt helped by Cameron's defense in CF. The Mariners without Cameron this season had a team ERA of 4.76. In 2003, they had a team ERA of 3.76 although if you take out Rafael Soriano's 1.53 ERA it goes to 4.70 which is still a hair lower then this year's ERA. Rey Ordonez has a career .246 BA, .298 OBP and .310 SLG, whereas Mike Cameron has a career .248 BA, .340 OBP and .440 SLG so to call Cameron overrated for his hitting is stupid. It's even stupider if you were also insinuating his defense was overrated because he's considered one of the best fielding CF's in either league. Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
Guest GreatOne Report post Posted October 5, 2004 Of course Gil Meche being crap prior to his senddown, Jamie Moyer's arm falling off, Piniero being crap before he got hurt, Hasegawa being crap, whoever the fuck you wanna name, I suppose none of those had ANYTHING to do with the high ERA whatsoever. And overall, his hitting stats STILL AREN'T GREAT (newsflash I know). Question: If Griffey (in his prime) had been the hitter Cameron was, would he have still gotten all the hoopla?
