Phils Set Interviews

By Todd Zolecki

INQUIRER STAFF WRITER

Three managers with major-league experience will interview with the Phillies next week, the club said today.

Don Baylor (Rockies, Cubs), Charlie Manuel (Indians) and Grady Little (Red Sox), will interview for the manager's position that opened Saturday when the Phillies fired Larry Bowa.

Baylor's interview is scheduled for Tuesday; Manuel's meeting is set for Wednesday. Little has a Thursday meeting scheduled.

Since the Phillies are required to interview a minority candidate, why the hell interview Baylor when they could've interviewed Willie Randolph(they did in 2001) or Cito Gaston?

Then I remember, Wade's running the manager search. So it's expected of him to be a complete moron.

Charlie Manuel wouldn't be a bad choice. He had two good seasons with the Indians and then had to deal with the team cutting back heavily on payroll for his last season. Two 90 win seasons and a 74 win season is a pretty good resume.

I'd just like to see the man get a managing gig somewhere in the majors. He did a good job during his time with the Orioles, until Peter Angelos and his Almighty Ego forced Johnson out the door (the same day he won AL MOTY, IIRC). Since then, I can't recall him getting another shot. I'm guessing Angelos blacklisted him and said he eats puppies or something, which is a shame. I'm surprised he hasn't latched on as a commentator somewhere, unless he's doing local work that I wouldn't have hard about.

Davey Johnson managed the Dodgers from 99-00 after the Baltimore gig.
