mike546 0 Report post Posted October 25, 2004 How the HELL is Foulke better then Mo when Mo has 53 saves, and Foulke has 33. Screw win shares, thats a TWENTY save difference. Mo had a 1.94 ERA, Foulke had a 2.17 ERA. Mo gave up 3 HRs, Foulke gave up 8. Mo had 4 BS, Foulke had 7. Mo gave up 17 runs, Foulke 22. All these stats are close, but Mo is better in all of them. Bored 0 Report post Posted October 25, 2004 And I don't care how many saves anyone had, it's not an accurate way to compare closers. "Mo" actually did have one more win share than Foulke (16 to 15). What really hurt Rivera is his peripheral numbers weren't among the elite this year. He ranked 10th in component ERA, 11th in K/BB ratio, 12th in WHIP, and 9th FIP among those on the list. Foulke had more strikeouts and less walks, meaning his defense helped him less than they helped Rivera. And Foulke pitched in a much tougher ballpark. Incidently that was the only category that Ryan was better than Gordon as well. Gordon led everyone on the list in ERC, WHIP, VORP, and RAA. He was 3rd in FIP and 4th in K/BB ratio.
