RNC sends a 'cease & desist' to Rock the Vote

Recommended Posts

and the RtV response

Dear Chairman Gillespie,

The letter I received from you yesterday was quite a surprise. It struck us as just the sort of "malicious political deception" that is likely to increase voter cynicism and decrease the youth vote. In fact, it is a textbook case of attempted censorship, very much in line with those that triggered our organization's founding some fifteen years ago.

I am stunned that you would say that the issue of the military draft is an "urban myth"that has been "thoroughly debunked by no less than the President of the United States."

I have some news for you. Just because President Bush, Vice President Cheney, and Secretary Rumsfeld, and for that matter Senator Kerry, say that there is not going to be a draft does not make it so. Just because Congress holds a transparently phony vote against the draft does not mean there isn't going to be one. Anyone who thinks that the youth of America are going to take a politician's word on this topic is living on another planet.

By your logic, there should be no debate about anything that you disagree with. There's a place for that kind of sentiment (and your threats), but its not here in our country.

There are questions that the politicians are running away from. How long can we keep 138,000 U.S. troops or more on the ground in Iraq? What if full-scale civil war erupts there, as the CIA has warned is a realistic possibility? Would the next President be faced with a choice of pulling out of Iraq rather than institute a draft? Would women be drafted? What exactly would the draft-age be?

According to the Pentagon's own internal assessment, there are "inadequate total numbers" of troops to meet U.S. security interests. The current issue of Time magazine reports that, "General John Keane, who retired last year as the Army's No. 2 officer, says the continued success of the all-volunteer military is not guaranteed" Keane has told Congress that adding more than 50,000 troops to the Army would require thinking about a return to the draft."

But you want young people to believe that the draft is just an "urban myth." I was expecting that you were going to present some facts to back up your assertion. But, instead, you have demanded that we stop talking about it.

I'm kind of bewildered as to how Gillespie is supposed to explain himself any further to the MTV crowd and the teenyboppers on the draft issue other than maybe, 'you know, we had a draft last when most of your parents were years away from learning how to fuck. It didn't go too well.'

That RTV is just proving to be such an authority I tell ya!

Gillespie can't explain himself to the MTV crowd because they don't have brains anyway :D

Indeed. Nice to see that the four people who actually watch MTV have the head of Rock the Vote as brain-dead as the viewers.

Actually, Jesse Jackson has said a paraphrased version of that already...

He's compared Bush's position on gay marriage to the State's Rights position that the Confederates used to start the Civil War.

:phaser:

I think that regardless of the quality of the brains behind the ears, telling more people to vote isn't a bad thing.

Just what America needs, more low wage uninformed idiots voting.

And another thing, why would anyone of voting age STILL be watching MTV? I mean I outgrew the station when I was like 14.

I disagree. I don't want fucking idiots who take anything P. Diddy seriously voting.

My philosophy is "If you're not voting, they're not listening"

What's wrong with people choosing who represents them? I guess because they listen to the wrong music, they shouldn't be allowed to vote.

Okay Mike..

No, they shouldn't vote because they are fucking morons.

If you're undecided now or need a reason to vote --- then don't waste the time or those of us who actually give a shit.

No, they shouldn't vote because they are fucking morons.

Should they pay their taxes too?

I'd imagine that if they don't get representation and all, then they shouldn't face taxation.

One flaw with all that is that there's no real standard to eliminate "morons" from the voting rolls. Considering that literacy tests and poll taxes are unconstitutional and all the other subjective stuff.

If you're undecided now or need a reason to vote --- then don't waste the time or those of us who actually give a shit.

I'd imagine even you'd concede that there's good reasons to be undecided. Like trying to figure out who the better representative would be. Or if you have some issues you care about, but both candidates favor something you like, while being against other things you like.

As for having a reason to vote. A lot of people just really don't care. It'll stay that way for a long time.

Although i'm in favor of moving election days to a Saturday, or having a holiday for the elections (while still having them on Tuesdays). But those are cosmetic changes.

Absolutely. Soak the idiots.

I'd imagine that if they don't get representation and all, then they shouldn't face taxation.

If you need somebody to tell you that you need to vote, then I have no problem with you not voting, because you're too fucking moronic to make anything resembling an informed decision.

One flaw with all that is that there's no real standard to eliminate "morons" from the voting rolls. Considering that literacy tests and poll taxes are unconstitutional and all the other subjective stuff.

I actually would have no qualms about the return of literacy tests. Keep the drooling "The two parties are the same" types --- or the even more inane "They keep ignoring us! We need to vote---pot? Yeah, I'll smoke some pot!" types at home where they can't shit in the water of the adults.

If you're undecided now or need a reason to vote --- then don't waste the time or those of us who actually give a shit.

If you're undecided now, you're an idiot and you should not vote.

As for having a reason to vote. A lot of people just really don't care. It'll stay that way for a long time.

Then they SHOULDN'T vote.

It's not a problem for me that so few people vote.

Although i'm in favor of moving election days to a Saturday, or having a holiday for the elections (while still having them on Tuesdays). But those are cosmetic changes.

Your boss cannot fire you for voting on election day, even if you're on the clock. Hate to break it to you.

And, no, it's fine where it is. Keeps the riff-raff out.

Can you say "scare tactics" ;)

We can. I have doubts that half of the people involved with RTV can say it, though.

Now, if Bush were to claim that due to Kerry's unpopularity with the military, a draft might be needed, we'd be hitting equal levels of offensiveness.

I thought MTV was the Shitty Reality Show channel... I don't think they've had an entire music video on the air in 15 years. (TRL does NOT count.)

Just what America needs, more low wage uninformed idiots voting.

Exactly, I don't believe you ought to need to be aware of the issues and the positions to vote. It's simply a constitutionally protected right, like the right to bear arms.

People should vote simply because they can and want to, just like why people say they should be able to own certain types of guns simply because they can and want to.

It's disgusting that even after beind debunked by the president outright

Uh, yeah. No misquotes THERE or anything..........

Like Bremer saying we need more troops. Little meaningless detail, he wasn't talking about NOW.

I'm for that too, as long as the dumbass voter gives up the right to bitch about politics whatsoever.

It's the same fear-mongering bullshit the Dems have become experts in.

Nope. Idiots shouldn't vote. If you're too stupid to make a decision, then don't piss in my water by casting an idiotic vote.

Like Bremer saying we need more troops. Little meaningless detail, he wasn't talking about NOW.

I guess they missed that copy of the NY Times where he CLARIFIED HIS REMARKS.

JOTW, you're dealing with people who go as far as advocating a literacy test.

Ya know.. the literacy tests that worked back in the South. Well.. by worked, I mean that the literacy test was meant to keep minorities (thought of as uninformed idiots) and poor white people from being able to vote. Nothing like bringing it back. This time, they may apply the same standards too. Ok.. that might be unlikely.

Lord forbid you let anybody who dares listen to music you dislike into the politicial process.

And tax them too, even if you won't let them vote.

Uh, yeah. No misquotes THERE or anything..........

Remember when we were told the Patriot Act would be temporary until the terrorist problem disappeared?

This President lies so much in office that it's hard to believe his campaign promises. And almost all politicians lie during campaign promises, no matter how much they lie in office.

Then "idiots" (which seems to be defined as "people who won't get involved with the political process") shouldn't own guns, either?
