How do you share files through regular AOL?

Why could you do it through AIM program, but not through AOL itself? You would think it would be more accessable sharing with AOL members than people who aren't neccessarilly AOL members

Ah, yes I understand that, but just sending a picture and such, basically stuff I could email if I knew the person's actuall email or something

 

Basically why in AIM can you send someone say an Excel spreadsheet or a Word Document but not directly in AOL's IM
