McCarver to Phils: Hire Fregosi

By BILL FLEISCHMAN

Jim Fregosi has Tim McCarver's endorsement as the next Phillies manager.

"I'm a big Fregosi fan," McCarver, the lead baseball analyst for Fox, said from Yankee Stadium on Wednesday, before the start of Game 2 of the Yankees-Boston American League Championship Series. "I like the way Jim manages."

Fregosi managed the Phillies from 1991 to '96, including their memorable run to the 1993 World Series. McCarver is a former Phillies catcher, so he knows the organization.

Reminded that the Phillies have said they prefer a manager who has taken a major league team to the postseason, McCarver said, "That's terribly optimistic on the Phillies' part, because you have to have the players before the manager."

One concern with Fregosi, 62, is that he is from the same old-school of managing as Larry Bowa, who, after 4 years as manager, was fired with two games remaining this season.

McCarver suggested that some Phillies players need to alter their baseball outlooks.

"[They need to] change their thinking," he said. "I don't know how you do that, but you have to have guys who are receptive to having their thinking changed. You talk common baseball sense to them. Some modern players don't understand common baseball sense."

McCarver, in his ninth season with Fox, has turned into a lightning rod: Fans either like his work or froth at the mouth over him.

During the final game of the St. Louis-Los Angeles opening-round series, McCarver made a poignant comment about former LA manager Tommy Lasorda. While Lasorda was shown in the dugout encouraging players, McCarver said that if he were in uniform, "I'm not sure I'd appreciate" what he was doing. Then he said Lasorda, a Norristown, Pa., native is "irrepressible, in many ways."

Asked about his remark, McCarver replied: "I wonder what [current Dodgers manager] Jim Tracy is thinking. There was no malice involved. There was firmness [in his belief]."

I have no idea why Fregosi is even on the radar for coming back to Philly. I mean for chrissakes he had one lucky year and sucked every other one.

I like Fregosi back here. Besides him ruining Tommy Greene and damn near destroying Schilling's arm by encouraging the "macho-ness" of consecutive 120+ pitch complete games - he's a hands-off guy and the players seem to like him.
