Rob E Dangerously 0 Report post Posted October 17, 2004 http://www.wistv.com/Global/story.asp?S=2439555 SC voters to decide on minibottles Nov. 2nd (Columbia-AP) Oct. 16, 2004 - South Carolina voters will decide November 2nd whether to maintain another of the state's modern peculiarities: the minibottle. South Carolina is the only state in the country that doesn't allow bartenders to pour drinks from regular-sized bottles of liquor. Instead they open 1.7 ounce bottles of booze like the ones served on airplanes. Supporters of the constitutional amendment allowing free-pour liquor say drinks will become cheaper and roads will become safer because cocktails and shots won't be so potent. But opponents argue switching to free-pour drinks will allow unscrupulous bartenders to water down drinks, reduce tax revenues and could open the state's liquor laws to yearly changes at the whim of lawmakers. A new group organized by liquor distributors has started a statewide television ad campaign questioning whether South Carolinians should vote to allow bartenders to pour drinks from regular-sized bottles. The Palmetto Hospitality Association ad doesn't spell out exactly how voters should choose, but is instead critical of the General Assembly for not having a plan in place if the voters approve the constitutional amendment. A woman in the ad says "No plan, no way." But Representative Bill Cotty of Columbia says the reason there's no legislation in place is because the liquor industry lobbied against it. well.. I guess we'll see who'll win between "get bigger glasses" and "potent beer rules".

kkktookmybabyaway 0 Report post Posted October 17, 2004 What's up with you and making threads dealing with S.C.? From my limited experience with booze, it seems that the mini-bottles are always more expensive than "regular" bottles in the store. And I'd love to see a S.C. barfight scene in a movie where someone gets tossed behind the bar stand and crashes into a bunch of mini bottles...

Guest Agent of Oblivion Report post Posted October 18, 2004 Sounds like a lot of glass is being used, to me. I bet the bars can make some money back recycling all those tiny little bottles.

Guest MikeSC Report post Posted October 18, 2004 The fun part, though, is when you serve a drink to some old lady who swears you didn't put any liquor in her drink, you can bring her the mini-bottle you used. -=Mike
Guest Nanks Report post Posted October 19, 2004 That would be so annoying as a bartender when you get a big order, like, 8 vodkas or whatever. Instead of just lining up the glasses and free pouring across them all you have to stand there opening up 8 little bottles??? That would drive me to distraction. I guess there's no flare-tending in South Carolina either, would kind of lose the impact flicking around a tiny bottle...
