Initial BCS standings released

Recommended Posts

OU's conference play is still tough. These Big XII teams are going to end up not being in the Top 25 by the time all things are said and done b/c they're just going to beat each other as evidenced by the A&M/OSU game.

OU plays 3 Top 25 teams this season and an outside chance of 4 depending on what Tech does.

USC played Cal, ASU, and VT.

They both played the same number of Top 25 teams.

By the end of the season ASU and VT probably won't be in the Top 25 anymore meanwhile A&M and Texas and probably OSU will.

If all three of these teams go undefeated then OU and Auburn deserve to play in the Orange Bowl. Not to mention that OU has to play in Stillwater and in College Station.

On top of that they scheduled there non conference games based off of last season. They scheduled the teams thinking they would be good. It is not there fault that the teams ended up blowing and it's not there fault the Big XII north blows.

However you CANNOT deny that they are one of the if not THE best team in the country and deserve to play for that national title based off of how good they actually are.

If you are denying it then you either have a bias or are just plain stupid.

Wait a minute,

Anybody thought Bowling Green without Josh Harris was going to be good?

I assume you've watched Oregon's post-Harrington fades (mostly second half but this year it started early, until they played WSU (defense? what defense?) anyway)

HOUSTON?

That's SOME justification right there, give it a B for effort..............

That's some of your usual trolling. Give it an A for effort.

They based all 3 teams off the fact that they were in bowl's last season. Originally there schedule was Bowling Green, Florida A&M, and an undetermined 3rd one.

They made a move to make it stronger and they did. They tried to schedule USC but that didn't happen. What were they supposed to do. Schedule road games at Georgia, USC, and Michigan?

No, but don't sit here and whine about 'Well we schedule'

I mean fucking UCLA was in a bowl game last year, I guess according to you they'd be a tough opponent. So would WSU this year ftm.

Whine, whine, whine. Since baseball season will be over for AngleSault tomorrow night apparently, it's good to know that he's got somebody ready-made to take over his throne...................

Do you do anything but troll and flamebait!?

OU IS GOOD. OU IS THE #2 TEAM IN THE COUNTRY AND IS PROBABLY GOOD ENOUGH TO BE #1. YOU CAN'T ACCEPT THAT FACT BUT IT IS A FACT. GET OVER IT. YOU ARE THE ONLY PERSON TO NOT ACCEPT THIS FACT. EVERY SPORTS WRITER AND FAN UNDER THE SUN HAS PRETTY MUCH SAID THAT THEY ARE THAT GOOD AND WILL PLAY IN THE ORANGE BOWL. GET OVER IT.

I'm not trolling at all!

What I'm saying is the truth. If it pisses you off then so be it. But everything I'm saying is the truth. They are that good. Sorry.

This is the most blatant case of a straw man argument I've ever seen.

NO ONE IS SAYING OKLAHOMA ISN'T GOOD! I don't even think anyone's saying they're not one the two best teams in the country right now. All anybody says is that OU's playing a ridiculously easy schedule, and if Miami or Auburn goes undefeated, they would deserve the national championship game more than the Sooners would. I swear I've said this before.

BTW Dama not only did I not say anything about OU not being any good I believe I posted about Peterson possibly doing a Clarett/Williams in 2006 and challenging the NFL a few days back (of course unlike Clarett he actually is that good), might wanna look that up and compare against the OU IS TEH SUXORS kick I'm supposedly on according to you.

And if Miami or Auburn goes into that game then it deserves to be against OU. There schedule is arguably the same or tougher than USC's. And on top of that if they are one of the Top 2 teams in the country then they should be in that game.

And if they don't get into the BCS title game and win out and go undefeated you will probably have another split national title.

Shut the fuck up. GreatOne and Dama, together you ruin every freaking thread. Just stop taking each other's bait and let it go.

I want an Auburn/Wisconsin national championship. Ass-beating, bone-crushing smash-mouth stuff with huge hits and crazy break-out moments.

Telling you two children to grow up is enough, but there's always more.

ESPN.com's served up a brief breakdown of how each BCS computer decides its rankings. Here they are, so that we can have a more specific glance at the minutiae sure to screw things up 8 or 9 times by season's end.

Anderson & Hester: In addition to the conventional use of opponent records, these ratings also utilize conference strength to calculate the difficulty of a team's schedule. For example, when Alabama beat Southern Miss on Saturday, it also gave a slight boost to Auburn, Georgia and Tennessee.

Billingsley: These ratings put more emphasis on recent games than on early games, which helps a team like Florida State that started slow but has quality opponents late in the year. On the flip side, Utah's season-opening victory over Texas A&M will not be as significant in December as it might be in other computers.

Colley: With a heavy schedule strength element, these ratings favor teams that play in strong conferences and also challenge themselves in the non-conference schedule. If a few teams are undefeated at the end of the season, the ones with the tougher overall schedules will be ranked higher.

Massey: The BCS version of these rankings is very simple. It's half who you play and half what your record is. No other factors are taken into account.

Sagarin: Schedules are judged by quality opponents rather than a cumulative winning percentage. And because the schedule strength calculations take into account location of games, if two teams have the same record against comparable schedules, the team with the better road wins would likely be ranked higher.

Wolfe: Like Sagarin's, these ratings take into account game location as part of a complex formula to derive schedule strength. And because schedule strength is a point of emphasis, a once-beaten team with a killer schedule can surpass an undefeated team with no quality wins.

Actually there were talks about Auburn/OU/USC/Wisconsin/Utah/Miami all finishing undefeated. Something like that has never happened and the National Title game would still probably be OU/USC since they won't budge in the polls unless they lose. BUT this could force the NCAA to have a playoff. Could being the key word here.

Koren Robinson will be a Pro Bowl receiver before there's a Division I-A playoff, I've come to the unfortunate realization.

Fortunately I go to a school that plays 1-AA (not like we're going after last Sat's chokejob though...............)

Actually, looking at the schedules, I say that there's a better than 50/50 chance that there are three undefeateds this year. I just don't see anyone on the slates that can realistically beat Wisconsin, USC, or Oklahoma.

Having more than two undefeateds is just about the only thing that could set a playoff in motion, but I think that if they did change the system, it would just be for one national championship game after the bowls are finished.

If they made an actual 8 team playoff, (the logical solution), it would throw off the whole bowl system. It would be really difficult to incorporate the current major bowls into the system, because no one's going to want to travel all the way across the country for a preliminary game or multiple times.

And GreatOne, quit calling it a chokejob. Montana's a greatly superior football program, and if they let you hang around until the fourth quarter, you should be happy. I mean none of your players has a Big Sky Conference Championship ring. Not only do we have guys with four, but Ochs has a Big XII championship as well.

(Yeah, I go to Wazzu, but I'm from Missoula, and I was born and raised on Grizzly football. With the Cougs playing like shit, I'm kind of identifying myself more with UM football right now. I mean at Coug games, they stop me at the gate to smell my coke cup to see if there's alcohol that they can take away from me; at Grizzly games, there's four different lines for free beer at halftime.)

Dude, having the ball inside the 5 on THREE different occasions and settling for/missing a FG each time (and LOSING by three) IS a chokejob, no matter what your rationale is.

You'd think Paul Wulff was auditioning for the job at his alma mater or something................

BTW you know Eastern BEAT those 'greatly superior' Grizz at Albi Stadium (in full view of me in the beer garden :headbang: ) two years ago, and the two years we've gone to the playoffs (92, 97) also beat UM--both in Missoula even, you act like it was an impossible feat or something

Well yeah those 3 could go undefeated.

Who does Miami face that's difficult for the rest of the season though?

And on top of that out of the 3 you mentioned OU has the least chance to be undefeated b/c they have to go to Stillwater and go to College Station which are now proving to be not easy tasks.

Maybe USC will lose and we'll finally get the OU-Miami revival match that the football deities have been taunting us with for the last four years

Miami/Oklahoma......only 2 questions need to be asked for legendary figures that could possibly be at that game.....

1. Will Barry Switzer be able to get past the metal detector at Pro Player Stadium to get in?

2. Will Dennis Erickson be judged as sober enough to be let into the game?

Miami has to play at NC State and at Virginia, and then close the season against Virginia Tech. None of those are anything close to a cakewalk. I could see them losing any of those and expect them to drop at least 1, no question.

It's all right, I'm just talking shit because the Griz are so much better than most of the Big Sky from year to year. And don't worry, I certainly remember the '97 game. That year, we were coming off of two straight national championships, and then we didn't even win the conference because of that game.

As for Miami's schedule, it's really not all that hard. Despite the ACC being solid this year, the only moderately tough games left are NC State, Virginia, and Virginia Tech. Virginia's looking a lot easier after the Florida State game, and VT's probably not good enough to pull the upset on the road, so really the Hurricanes' best chance of losing is probably this week against the Wolfpack.

I just think Miami isn't at their normal level. Sorry, but one good game doesn't mean Berlin's not questionable? The offense is getting better, and the D is good but after giving up over 400 yards at home to a albeit good Louisville team. They don't seem has strong as before.

Whatever. How Oklahoma improved its standing with the computer so dramatically after beating freaking KANSAS is beyond me. No team in front of OU on any of the computers lost.

The good thing is that Utah is now in the top 6, making them automatically BCS-eligible if they can hold onto it.

Edited.
