Reasons for Rock/Foley not returnign as often?

Recommended Posts

As I read the RAW thread, and shake my head at how bad the show sucks now, I reflected for a moment on the markout moments back the the Austin/Foley/Rock days, and how much fun I used to have watching RAW, and, how now, it seems its not so much fun.

But, think about it, if you were the Rock, would you even come back for an extended period of time and put up with this crap? Could you imagine Rocky being told by HHH what to do, and Rock allowing himself to look weak/lesser than almighty HHH?

I think Rock stays away to avoid that very thing.

This applies to Austin, but not Rock or Foley.

With Rock, he's clearly moved on to bigger and better things. He'll only return if he has a movie to promote or if the show is in his area and he makes an appearance out of sympathy for the business that made him.

Foley's actions seem to be based on his own interests and nothing to do with where WWE is at. He returned to ref the Nash/HHH match to promote his book. Then he wanted to make a return at Mania in NY for his own career. Now he's only doing random PR work. Basically, Foley likes to keep busy with different activities and projects, and he has every right to.

Austin though, just hates the product. But while we can all agree with that assessment, I question where his motives lie. For the past three years of bitching and moaning, it seems like the only product Austin likes ends with him stunning half the roster to end every single Raw.

edit--but yeah sorry, I do agree with what you said. If the product was good and the business was hot, all three men would try to make as many appearances as possible.

I think that the Rock would be the one person that wouldn't be in a position to be pushed around. No one is a bigger draw currently than the Rock is. No one. The Rock's name is established. He could leave Vince and go to NWA and singlehandedly pull that promotion to notoriety.

What I'm saying is...that with the ratings so far down (at least a million viewers under what it SHOULD be), that Vince could try to bring Rocky back for at least a 2-3 month program to get someone over (Orton, Batista, etc.)...but...if the timing was OK to do so, I seriously think Rock doesn't want to put up with Steph and HHH booking crap.

Think about it, if you were Rocky, would you listen to Steph? Better yet, who would Vince side with in a backstage disagreement....HHH or The Rock?

Sure, HHH is family and all, but, oh the $$$ Rock has made/can make/will make...

And it's not just the Rock I am thinking about. How many of these guys are going to start seeing the writing on the walls, that someday, it's going to be the HHH and Steph show?

The Rock could easily sign a contract with TNA for chicken scratch, but demand a vast majority of the revenue from merchandise sales and a certain percentage from ticket sales and eventually once the promotion gets bigger, likely break even with whatever downside guarantee he'd pick up from WWE.

The Rock got sick of HHH's shit.

The Rock tried his damnest to get Jericho over as a legit threat, and then HHH goes on to fuck it up. The Rock hasen't forgotten about that.

Or Booker T in early 2003.

I think Meltzer quoted Rock as making over 30 million a year or 2 ago from the movies. At that amount, seriously, would you go back for any kind of extended run?

It's nice he drops in now and then, but he'll never be a full timer again, plus, he's got a pretty full plate for the time being (3 or 4 movies he's signed for)

I can't blame Rock or Austin for not wanting to be apart of today's product. However, if these two men are giving off a vibe that they don't like the product or couldn't bother with it, I think it trickles over to all the fans they brought in during the boom period as well. The Rock actually put over Brock Lesnar as the next big thing after Hogan put him over as "The Best Ever" and HE also got out. Not a good sign for casual fans to think the current rosters are anything to waste time on.

And, as much as I hate to say it, shows constructed around Chris Benoit, Chris Jericho, Eddy Guerrero and Kurt Angle as top names at this point create a second-rate vibe, since those guys were typecast as being second-rate in the boom years. HHH and the Undertaker are the only connections to that era, but they were probably the two least important key figures of all the key figures.
