Guest Boomer Sprinklespax Report post Posted November 1, 2004 Not only will he be nominated, but he'll more than likely WIN. No way the Academy rewards a young actor's first great performance, especially given that he's a black guy. Sorry, but it's just not gonna happen (the W anyways...he'll prolly get nominated, though). Apparently you missed Adrien Brody's win for the pianist in '02 Brody's not black. However, I think he could get the win, although I doubt it. I'll be seeing Ray tomorrow or Tuesday. I meant that Adrien Brody, a relatively unknown actor, surprised everyone in '02 when he won. I personally thought Daniel Day Lewis had it locked for his amazing performance in Gangs of New York... so I was shocked (and a little pissed at first) when Brody won. Foxx has a definite chance and the pressure will be on to give him the award considering the fact that A) the movie was released at just the right time near the end of the year, guaranteeing him a better shot than say Jim Carrey whose film was released much earlier in the year and B) everyone is already clamoring behind him in such a way that it would be an outrage if he didn't get it.. and I really don't think anyone else has delivered a performance quite as powerful this year The award is his to take The year isn't over yet, so time will tell on your assertion. Johnny Depp is said to be great in Finding Neverland, as is Colin Farrell in Alexander, as is Leonardo DiCaprio in The Aviator, and there have already been some other wonderful performances this year from Jim Carrey, Jim Caviezel, and Denzel Washington (who is always an Oscar hopeful, no matter what the movie). And that's not even taking into account whatever indie films the Academy will decide to throw a bone or two to this year. Because of this, I think saying that Jamie Foxx not winning would be an outrage is, well, a little outrageous. Sure, his performance was pretty good and all, but it isn't like it's one of the greatest or anything. It is merely one of a few standouts amongst a pretty blah crowd this year thus far, and there is certainly more than enough competition out there to make it a tighter race than you might think. EDIT: Another one to add to the list of potential candidates for an Oscar: Bill Murray in The Life Aquatic. Since he was, y'know, ROBBED of an Oscar for Lost In Translation. I stand by my belief that his performance is the best of the year as far as I what I've seen and I think he'll win the Oscar that he rightfully deserves. Time will tell of course, but I think he's got the best chance so far.
Guest Boomer Sprinklespax Report post Posted November 1, 2004 Even if I did think Foxx's performance was the best of the year so far, I'd still be skeptical of his chances at winning. I mean, Christ, it took Denzel forever to get the Academy to acknowledge him, and he's motherfucking DENZEL.
Black Lushus 0 Report post Posted November 1, 2004 How often does a Person win for protraying a real character? I know Ben Kingsley won for Ghandi...but I could care less about the Oscars so my history isn't all there... Question for those who saw Ray...do they touch on his drug addictions and womanizing problems?

I know Ben Kingsley won for Ghandi...but I could care less about the Oscars so my history isn't all there... Question for those who saw Ray...do they touch on his drug addictions and womanizing problems? Yes, that's kind of the main point of the movie, even overshadowing the music at times. I thought it was a great movie. Like Downhome said earlier, after 2 1/2 hours, I didn't want the movie to end. Foxx's performance is honestly one of the best I have ever seen. It can't be overstated what an amazing job he did.
k thx 0 Report post Posted November 1, 2004 How often does a Person win for protraying a real character? I think Russel Crowe was the last for Beautiful Mind
Black Lushus 0 Report post Posted November 1, 2004 I'm not so sure Crowe got it for Beautiful Mind, though he was nominated...either he lost it in 2001 to Denzel for Training Day or in 2002 to Adrien Bordy for the Pianist, whichever year Beautiful Mind came out...Crowe DID however win for Gladiator... Guest Boomer Sprinklespax Report post Posted November 1, 2004 Denzel did in fact defeat Russell Crowe in 2001 with his performance in Training Day.
syxx2001 0 Report post Posted November 2, 2004 Jamie gets a nomination, but I dont think he will win. Its amazing though, watching the Jamie Foxx show and thinking "This man is going to be nominated for an Oscar". Hell, Denzel didnt even get one for Malcolm X, and didnt get nominated (I dont think) for John Q. I think Jamie is getting alot of attention because he is a comedian, and how he suprised everyone in Collateral and now Ray. What was his last movie, Breaking All The Rules? Just thinking back, THE MANNERISMS, they make the movie more than his voice, the music, anything to me. Jamie had it down pat. In the newspaper last Sunday they had a preview for Ray and an interview with Jamie and he said something like "Alot of these guys went to acting school and studied it all of their lives and they take it too serious. I was an athlete in school, I never studied this. I just do it to have fun."
JasonX 0 Report post Posted November 2, 2004 Regarding Jamie Foxx getting nominated/winning the Oscar for best actor for "Ray", he's definately going to get nominated for it and will most likely win it given that: 1. "Ray" is Jamie Foxx's proverbial coming out party with regards to him being taken seriously as a dramatic actor. So the Academy will most definately take that into consideration 2. This year is a REALLY REALLY shitty year for best actor nominees. Aside from Jim Carey for Eternal Sunshine, this year's batch of best actor award possibles is extremely thin. So Foxx has the added bonus of the fact that he doesn't have that much of a competition this year to keep him from winning Best Actor award.
