DerangedHermit 0 Report post Posted November 8, 2004 http://cbs.sportsline.com/mlb/story/7868245 Oakland Athletics shortstop Bobby Crosby was just a vote shy of being a unanimous pick for AL rookie of the year, and Pittsburgh Pirates outfielder Jason Bay won the NL award Monday. Crosby received 27 of 28 first-place votes in balloting by the Baseball Writers' Association of America for 138 points. Chicago White Sox closer Shingo Takatsu received the other first-place vote and finished second with 44 points, followed by Baltimore pitcher Daniel Cabrera with 29 points. Bay, the first Pittsburgh player and first native Canadian to win the NL award, got 25 of 32 first-place votes and 146 points. San Diego shortstop Khalil Greene received seven first-place votes, 24 seconds and one third for 108 points, and Padres reliever Akinori Otsuka was next with 23 points
Hektik 0 Report post Posted November 8, 2004 Let me just say this about the NL ROY, The Pirates still sucked last year with or without Jason Bay. If the Padres don't have Khalil Greene, they are not even a playoff contender. Khalil Greene also plays in a much tougher position. I guess the ROY award is now just an offensive award. CanadianChris 0 Report post Posted November 8, 2004 Crosby wins? Eh. Best of a bad bunch of rookie position players in the AL. Takatsu had a much better season, even if he's as much of a rookie as Ichiro and Nomo were.
Bored 0 Report post Posted November 8, 2004 How in the world did Daniel Cabrera receive more votes than Zach Greinke? Oh wait Cabrera went 12-8 and Greinke went 8-11 despite having an ERA more than a run worse and absolutely hideous strikeout to walk ratio. Baseball writers are clueless. The Man in Blak 0 Report post Posted November 8, 2004 Greene got killed by playing in Petco Park: road stats: .301/.353/.543, 12 HR home stats: .241/.345/.338, 3 HR A 200+ drop in OPS. That's like dropping from Alex Rodriguez to Neifi Perez. If he had played in a different ballpark, there's a good shot that he would have put up Bay-esque numbers as well. Greene's offensive stats were hurt by Petco Park. Alot of writers take Coors into effect, but they fail to adjust for the opposite effect.

Its not Most Valuebale Player. Its more a Most Outstanding Player. So that who Pirates argument is not valid here, really. Ditto with Tougness of position. You can't penelize a OF because he is facing a SS.
EVIL~! alkeiper 0 Report post Posted November 10, 2004 Ditto with Tougness of position. You can't penelize a OF because he is facing a SS. Offensively, no. But it is more than fair to give Greene credit for his defense.
the max 0 Report post Posted November 10, 2004 Especially given just how good Greene was this past season on the defensive side.

EVIL~! alkeiper 0 Report post Posted November 10, 2004 Just for fun. Win Shares separates shares between offense and defense... Jason Bay, offense: 15.5, defense: 1.9 Khalil Greene, offense: 15.1, defense: 5.6 Greene was the advantage of playing time. If we look at Win Shares percentage.... Bay: .675 Greene: .670 Overall, this is really close, and I don't think you can go wrong with either player.
