James Bond casting rumour

Recommended Posts

A radio station in Melbourne is reporting that the producers of the Bond series have cast Justin Melvey, of Days of Our Lives fame, as the new 007. At the moment he's in Australia as a competitor on a celebrity ballroom dancing TV show.

If this is true, this is the end of James Bond.

I had heard that P Diddy was interested in the role, saying that the world was ready for a black James Bond.

No, I'm not kidding.

Bond rumors...nothing new

You never know...he could be a good Bond. Wasn't Connery an unknown actor when he was originally cast.

What happened with Pierce Brosnan as 007? I thought he played the part really well. They only made, what, four movies with him as Bond?

That makes him the third most prolific Bond in the franchise's history.

There was a rumour recently that Eric Bana had been cast as the next James Bond which turned out to be bullshit, Bana himself saying that he only found out when he turned on the evening news.

I wouldn't take anything that a radio station says with more than a grain of salt.

Just like with Superman, everyone says a different name. Don't trust any rumors until the movie is actually out.

Personally, if they wanted a black James Bond, I'd like Colin Salmon (from "Keen Eddie"). I think he could pull it off although I doubt they'd be willing to put the franchise in the hands of a relative unknown.

I'd like someone like James Purefoy personally.

I don't know why there should be a black James bond in the first place, really. Is there a candidate who really warrants the role that much as to fundamentally change the character?

Is the movie series still based on stories from the original novels, or did they move away from those?

Casting Colin Salmon would be a fundamental change? He at least is English, unlike Brosnan. He has played Bond for the screentests of the last 3 films as well, so its not like he is unfamiliar with the part.

Except Bond is Scottish in the books. Or at least I recall hearing such.

The last one that was really based on anything from Fleming was the first Dalton one, the last close adaptation was probobly the one with Lazenby.

Oh and casting a BLACK GUY as a Scottish vaguely racist/mysoginist killer for the government who's always been white is a bit of a departure.

I think they need to do something similar to the Lazenby movie On Her Majesty's Secret Service. Something in a different direction. Of course, the main problem with that is that the previous 3 Connery movies all made over 20 million in 60s money, then OHMSS made 11 million, only to bounce back to 20+ for Diamonds Are Forever (the last real Connery one).

If they really wanted to do something a bit different, let Tarantino do his Casino Royale with Brosnan with a lesser budget.

Since the movies aren't even based on the original novels, it's about time to try some new things. They've already changed to be more in line with the modern times and Bond isn't the same womanizing 60's playboy, so why not bring on bigger change.

The easiest way would be to bring Bronson back for one more film and either retire James Bond or kill him, then bring in a new agent. Perhaps have James retire from agent duty, but remain involved with the organization. I'm sure there are much more interesting ways to handle such change, without drastically altering the series.

Any change involving James Bond no longer blowing shit up would surely put the fans in an uproar, but it can work as long as people who respect the series work on it. Of course, it could be a disaster in the hands of a money above all else type of producer, but that's no different than any movie.

Brosnan already said he'd rather have Colin Farrell replace him as the next Bond. Farrell then said that Brosnan can "Go to hell" or something of that nature, and that he'd choose the upcoming Miami Vice movie over Bond.

I can't see Farrell as Bond. If he gets the role, all his predecessors have been handsome through masculinity and nature, i.e. Moore, Connery, Brosnan. Farrell is too rogueish.

The films aren't based on the stories from the original Ian Fleming books anymore but they still sometimes use elements from the books that haven't been used in previous films.

Conan just mentioned that Colin Farrell doesn't want to play Bond.

Obligatory post-fact joke: Farrell said that Bond doesn't get laid enough.

Going by what someone said up above about Ewan McGregor being Bond...

I think he'd fit the part well. Though first he'd have to darken his hair, judging by his work in the Star Wars movies.

...think about his resume then...playing Obi-Wan Kenobi AND James Bond...

Colin Salmon would rule it, who cares if he's black. Hell, throw Jackie Chan's name in there as well - you know he'd LOVE to play Bond.

If they wanted to fundamentally change the character, then get Jason Staltham. He's got a gruff style that screams "not Bond".

My personal choice though? Robbie Williams. I have no reasoning behind it, other than he looked the part in his "Millenium" video.

Robbie Williams has no pedigree as an actor. I would go with Jackie if they wanted to change the character. He would bring fun back to Bond, and that is a big plus.

I know true fans would shit on this, but what if James Bond wasn't really his name but was the name of any guy in that position? Then it would work to have a black James Bond...it sounds silly, but it's a different kind of twist...
