My Best of WWE 2004

Recommended Posts

Match of the Year: Eddie vs. Brock, No Way Out

There is little doubt in my mind for this one. The one flaw in it is the Goldberg run-in, but other than that it smokes everything the WWE has done this year in terms of in-ring storytelling. The closest thing the WWE has done this year to that is Eddie/Angle SS02.

Wrestler of the Year: Eddie Guerrero

A difficult choice. No one here stands out for me as WOTY. Benoit worked two 60 minute matches this year (Ironman, Royal Rumble), cut some good promos, had a DVD come out, won a title. But he never “carried the company” at any point during that run, and I don’t know if I’d give any of his matches this year over ****. He had lots of “good” matches, but I wouldn’t call any outstanding. The WM XX match didn't hold up on further viewings, and I absolutely hated the storyline leading up to it and the storyline following it.

Guerrero is closer in the match category, because he had the WWE MOTY against Brock at NWO, his match with Angle was the best on the card at SSlam (I'd go as-so-far-as-to-say it would be in the top 3 MOTYC). At one point this year, he was the most over wrestler in the company, and actually got the chance to carry the ball and had an effect on attendance – if for a brief moment. He burned out, though, half-way through the year, but still has managed to stay around the top of the card.

Feud of the Year: Orton vs. Foley

Foleys promos really put this over-the-top. This was the only feud this year that had me going -even for a split second- "Oh shit!". For that one second, I believed it was real.

Angle of the Year: Tough Enough 2004

Smackdown is hitting it's highest ratings of the year (probably) due to this, and out of it came one of the most talked about Angles of the year in Kurt vs. Puder. It's probably the only time during Smackdown that I watch with some interest.

Just a note for everyone "disqualifying" The Michales/Triple H December '03 match.

It's obvious the topic starter is going by Meltzer's award period which is actually from 12/03-11/04. He's been doing it for years. Most of the best of '03 lists were compiled before the 12/29 match even too place, hence I'm sure that's why it's on the list.

WRESTLER OF THE YEAR

Chris Benoit - a decent pick in a weak field.

TAG TEAM OF THE YEAR

None.

NEWCOMER OF THE YEAR

Eugene- even though they screwed him up within a few weeks

MOST IMPROVED WRESTLER

Randy Orton- he's improved leaps and bounds since he won the IC title back in December

FINISHER OF THE YEAR

.

ANGLE OF THE YEAR

Chris Benoit’s journey to the World Title- it was pretty cohesive

FEUD OF THE YEAR

Randy Orton vs Mick Foley - There wasn't anything else that was really done as well as this, which is sad since Foley's not a full timer

MATCH OF THE YEAR

Triple H vs Chris Benoit vs Shawn Michaels (Wrestlemania XX) - Don't buy the nonsense that it doesn't hold up. It holds up fine. It was a great 3 way and a really exciting match. I'm in the Eddie/Brock was overrated territory (especially because to me it came a cross like the Michaels/Jericho re-match on RAW from 7/03)

TV MATCH OF THE YEAR

Triple H vs Shawn Michaels (Monday Night RAW – Dec 2003) - Great match.

Runners up are the 2 Michaels/Benoit matches, the 8 man tag prior to Backlash and Benjamin/Triple H

PAY-PER-VIEW OF THE YEAR

Wrestlemania XX - a great show to be at live, not the Best PPV ever or anything, but it's been a tough year for them and this is *far* above the rest.

Wrestler of the Year: Chris Benoit. I'm not refuting any of the points Rudo stated but I didn't watch SD enough or order any of their PPV's so I can't in good standing pick Eddy over Benoit.

MOTY: Eddy vs Brock, No Way Out.

Honourable mentions: Benoit vs Lesnar, SD and Benoit vs Michaels in Arizona.

Tag Team of the Year: La Res. Grenier is passable and Conway is in my Top Five Workers on RAW right now.

Newcomer of the Year: Nobody worth mentioning.

Most improved wrestler: Batista. I went from not giving a shit at all about him to being a fan.

Feud of the Year: Nothing comes close to Foley vs Orton.

WRESTLER OF THE YEAR

Chris Benoit - It just has to be Benoit as far as i am concerned. I have never shouted at my TV for a wrestler to win a match and this year i did it twice (Those being when Benoit dumped The Big Show over the top rope at the Rumble and when HHH taped out to the crossface). Apart frpm that he has had several good/great matches this year, most notably with HHH, HBK and Kane

TAG TEAM OF THE YEAR

La Resistance - As these guys are the only actual tag team there is apart from the Dudleyz and the Bashams (One of those aren't used and the other is incredibly stale). La Res have improved this year and in my opinion Rob Conway could be a future star for the company (with a little luck of course). They also gave the tag straps so credibility.

NEWCOMER OF THE YEAR

Eugene/Gene Snitsky - I couldn't pick between the two of these guys for the life of me. Eugene has been quite entertaining and i applaud the way that Nick Dinsmore has pulled this character off. Snitsky on the other hand was a complete surprise he came out of nowhere and is so bad it's funny (and likewise entertaining).

MOST IMPROVED WRESTLER

Batista - He is just the man. I love every moment he is on screen.

FINISHER OF THE YEAR

Kidman’s Shooting Star Press - Because it is sold like death on Smackdown and has put a few people on the sidelines too (albeit Chavo was an accident)

ANGLE OF THE YEAR

Chris Benoit’s journey to the World Title and the 'new' Edge - As i said erlier i was fully behind the Benoit story. But the 'new' Edge character, if you will has been very entertaining as you don't realy know what he will do next. He will beat down anyone who gets in his way or annoys him regardless of disposition

FEUD OF THE YEAR

Triple H vs Chris Benoit vs Shawn Michaels - This was very entertaining. I hated it at first cos i thought that the WWE had pulled the plug on the idea of Benoit winning at 'Mainia XX and had put HBK in the possistion to win

MATCH OF THE YEAR

Triple H vs Chris Benoit vs Shawn Michaels (Wrestlemania XX) - This match had me screaming at the TV for HHH to tap out. Truely fantastic match, what an ending

TV MATCH OF THE YEAR

Benoit Vs HBK (in the dessert)/Shelton Benjamin Vs HHH - The first match was built up so much and was very good until HHH showed up. And my second pick was due to the fact that it was totally unexpected and told a really good story

PAY-PER-VIEW OF THE YEAR

Wrestlemania XX - Had to be. All the matches with the exceptions of the tag title matches and the Sable vs Torie match were good for one reason or another.

Wrestler of the Year

-I'd go with Benoit on this one. I mean not so much for the 2nd half of the year, but then, nobody has really stood out past June. So I'd have to say Benoit based on his work Jan to June/July-ish.

Tag Team of the Year

-La Res I guess by default. This category shouldn't count this year.

Newcomer of the Year

- I know he's new, but I'll say Carlito. Eugene is a close second, but I'm really biased with Eugene in that I hate that gimmick more than HHH himself! Plus, I think carlito will become a major player, if he isn't already. Cool!

Most Improved Wrestler

- JBL. Not just for stepping up his in ring game when its needed, but also for making me like a guy I really hate.

Best Angle

-For me it was the whole Eddie battling his addictions (which was represented by Brock for storyline purposes). Awesome story, with an ending I thought I would never see. This also tied into his program with Kurt.

Feud of the Year

- Eddie Guerrero v. Kurt Angle. The whole thing was really well done, and they did what they could with Angle's injury issues.

Match of the Year

- If you would have asked me the night of Mania (which I was there for) which was the best match on that show, I would have said the Triple Threat Match. But Ive since watched the DVD a couple of times, and I have to say Eddie vs Angle may have been one of the most underrated matches in WWE history. That thing freakin rocked, so I'd have to go with Angle vs Eddie from Mania as #1.

TV Match

- I really liked HBK vs Benoit from Phoenix (I think?), the finish really sucked, but the body of the match was pretty damn sweet.

PPV

- WrestleMania XX. Nothing else is close.

WRESTLER OF THE YEAR: Chris Benoit

All I can say about this is finally, he got a push that he really deserved and he did it very well.

TAG TEAM OF THE YEAR: Le Resistance

They were basically the only real team except for the really dull Dudleyz so I have to go with La Resistance.

NEWCOMER OF THE YEAR: Gene Snitsky

I didn´t like him at first but he has actually grown on me and was the best of the newcomers, but I must say that even Eugene was better then I had expected.

MOST IMPROVED WRESTLER: Batista

I have to go with Batista here for really surprising me with the evolment of his character, he has always had the looks but with his character as it looks now and even his improvement in the ring he is now one of mine favourites and I really hope he receives a big push soon.

FINISHER OF THE YEAR: Triple H’s Pedigree

The only one that still has the credibility without being forced on me, the RKO and SSP were a bit to forced for me.

ANGLE OF THE YEAR

Chris Benoit’s journey to the World Title

Definitely Benoit did it really good to and it also resulted in the best matches of the year.

FEUD OF THE YEAR: Triple H vs Chris Benoit vs Shawn Michaels

I loved this one it seemed as if it was perfectly planned and also I love it when they plan it for a long time with Benoit starting his Journey long before the Rumble.

MATCH OF THE YEAR: Triple H vs Chris Benoit vs Shawn Michaels (Wrestlemania XX)

Beautiful match with a beautiful ending, I just wish it was the ending of this feud cause I felt the match at Backlash was a bit to much.

TV MATCH OF THE YEAR: Chris Benoit vs Shawn Michaels (Monday Night RAW - April 2004)

I have to go with this one simply because both workers were really good, even though the ending wasn´t that good.

PAY-PER-VIEW OF THE YEAR: Wrestlemania XX

Definitely Mania, it really didn´t have that much competition since much of the PPVs were really dull.
