So here's the deal;

Dad died earlier this year, and mum is up in China running his company. We both spoke about out futures, and it was agreed for me to go up to China early next year to work there for one year, in exchange for enough money to send me through my Master's degree (about $14,000 in fees plus $40,000 in living expenses over 2 years, plus a little extra for insurance cover, emergencies etc. Australian Dollars). It sounds like a lot, but it's basically a 6 day work week with 10-12 hours a day job, with no holidays including Christmas day.

So I call her today, being one month or so before I'm scheduled to leave, and I tell her that I would like to discuss my salary. Her reply was that she didn't want to go into it (it was 'too formal') and that I should work there for a year and in return she'd support me for the rest of my education. I wouldn't be supplied with a salary, but rather would basically continue to have to ask for money like I was a teenager. My efforts to clarify a salary were rebuffed with STERN disapproval.

So now I'm really pissed off. I'm expected to go to China for a fucking year, uproot my entire life, losing touch with most of my friends, it will probably have major repercusions with the relationship I'm in, and my reward at the end of it is to live at her beck and call and according to her whim.

Fuck it. Working part-time here in Australia and going through 2 years of little to no free time seems like a cakewalk to this.

Pissed off now. Big time.

Sorry about your Dad, and indeed. you sound like a smart man. Get a crappy job in your field (I know easier than it sounds) and live happily butpoorly with you lady. I don't know how it is in Australia, but here, 2 years experience is generally as good as a Master's.
