MikeJordan23 0 Report post Posted November 27, 2004 I might be alone here, but I think Eddy Gurrero vs. Rey Misterio jr. from Halloween Havoc 1997 is better than Ric Flair vs. Steamboat from Wrestlewar. The Rey/Eddy match was much more action-packed, more highspots (Not necessarily just high-flying moves, just more entertaining parts, as in very little restholds), the psychology in it was equal if not better, and it had a hotter finish. Both are in my top 5 favorites matches, but I think Eddy and Rey's was a little bit better. I'd like to hear your thoughts on the matches and which one you liked better
Corey_Lazarus 0 Report post Posted November 27, 2004 I honestly think that Eddy/Rey from HH97 is the most overrated "great" match in history. It was damn fine, but greatest match of all-time? No way. So, Flair/Steamboat by default, even though the WrestleWar match was pretty boring to me for about half of it.
Guest LooneyTune Report post Posted November 27, 2004 All 3 of the Flair/Steamboat matches from 1989 (Chi-Town, Clash, WWar) were better than Eddie/Rey, which I also think is one of the most over-rated matches in...somewhat recent time. ****? Maybe. *****? What the fuck is everyone smoking? If thats *****, then we've really broken down the rating system.
Hunter's Torn Quad 0 Report post Posted November 27, 2004 I think comparing Steamboat v Flair to Guerrero v Mysterio is like comparing Bruce Lee to The Fabulous Moolah.
MikeJordan23 0 Report post Posted November 27, 2004 A lot of negatives feedback on the Guerro/Misterio match, I seriously don't see a single thing wrong with the match. No restholds, no slow parts/restholds, fast-action, innovative moves, crowd heat, hot finish. That match is perfect to me. This is the first time I've heard anybody say anything negative aout this match.

Guest Salacious Crumb Report post Posted November 27, 2004 I'd say Eddie/Rey is better than the WrestleWar and Chi-Town matches but fall just short of the 2/3 falls match.

Guest The Shadow Behind You Report post Posted November 27, 2004 I'm trying to figure out why these matches are being compared. Too totally different styles and two different set of workers. Both were fantastic. I'd likely pop in Eddy/Rey before WrestleWar Flair/Steamboat mainly because it's shorter and faster paced but that's not a knock on The WW Match at all. Both matches are fantastic and if I were to make a 50 Match Comp to rest me the rest of my life. BOTH of these matches make the cut.

That was kinda the point, to get a feel of what style of match is more appreciated here, really. I wanted to know what reasons and why you prefer one style of match over another. I figured these are two of the better examples for each individual style. And yes the 2/3 Falls Match is great, and the Chi-Town Rumble match is probably the most entertaining of the Flair/Steamboat series to me.

Chi-Town was quite good and Clash VI was one of the greatest matches of the 1990's. But it is virtually impossible to compare the Steamboat/Flair and Eddy/Rey matches as they are incredibly different style matches. -=Mike
Guest fanofcoils Report post Posted November 27, 2004 The Clash VI match was in the 1990s? I wonder which match has fallen in the eyes of smarks more in the past couple of years, the Wrestlewar 89 Flair-Steamboat match or the No Way Out 01 HHH-Austin match. strummer 0 Report post Posted November 27, 2004 I've watched the WrestleWar match at least a half a dozen times in the past year (it's on HHH's DVD and Flair's) and I just can't get into it. The 2/3 falls Clash match is another story, just tremendous.
MikeJordan23 0 Report post Posted November 27, 2004 I thought the Windham/Flair match was better too then the WrestleWar match. I loved all Flair/Luger matches, I think some could compare.
CanadianChris 0 Report post Posted November 27, 2004 The Clash VI match was in the 1990s? No, it was in between the Chi-Town Rumble and WrestleWar matches. April 2, 1989 (same day as WrestleMania V).
Mecha Mummy 0 Report post Posted November 27, 2004 I liked Eddy/Rey more than the WrestleWar match but not as much as the Clash match. I never saw the Chi-Town match.
Si82 0 Report post Posted November 27, 2004 I thought the Windham/Flair match was better too then the WrestleWar match. I totally agree. The match with Windham is probably my favourite from the first two discs of the Ric Flair DVD. That said, I prefere the Flair/Steamboat match from WrestleWar not only to the Rey/Eddie match from Halloween Havoc but also the rest of the Flair/Steamboat series. I also think that the Austin/Triple H match from No Way Out 2001 is pretty boring after seeing it more than once. I don't understand why people loved that match to begin with. Guest The Shadow Behind You Report post Posted November 27, 2004 Me neither and it wasn't even the best match that night (Angle/Rock) and the woman's match almost equaled it (trish/steph). Good fun "epic" match that was overpraised because some felt it HAD to be praised. and count me in with the the feeling that Windham/Flair was better then Flair/Steamboat. Guest Contentious C Report post Posted November 27, 2004 This is a stupid thread. Any of you talking seriously about any of these four matches as the 'greatest of all time' must be out of your minds. That being said, 3 of the 5 Flair/Steamboat matches I've seen (Chi-Town, Clash 6, and a handheld from Landover on 3/18/89) are in the ballpark with Eddy vs. Rey. Clash 6 is probably better. WrestleWar and Spring Stampede 94, on the other hand, can't hold a candle to Eddy/Rey. People have written theses on all the shit that's fucked up about Wrestlewar and its alleged greatness. Guest bigm350 Report post Posted November 28, 2004 I think Clash VI is the greatest of the trilogy of 89 between Flair and Steamboat. Chi Town Rumble is a close second. Personally, I like the Rey-Eddy Havoc match better than Flair and Steamboats WW match, but not more than the other two of the series from 89.
Guest Rrrsh Report post Posted November 28, 2004 1st off, HHH/Austin REALLY dosnt hold up well over time. 2nd, I personally think Steambaot/Savage is better than all three of the Flair/Steamboat matches, altho the 2/3 match is SOOOOOOO close. I think that kind of comparison is better. For Eddy/Rey, we should compare that match to say 123 Kid/Owen from KotR 94. Its a little more on the same level. O yah, which Flair/Stemaboat match from 89 IS NOT on the Flair DVD agian? I always forget
Hunter's Torn Quad 0 Report post Posted November 28, 2004 O yah, which Flair/Stemaboat match from 89 IS NOT on the Flair DVD agian? I always forget The Chicago match isn't on the DVD. I don't know why, though, as it would have made so much sense to have all three of their televised matches on there.
Guest Rrrsh Report post Posted November 28, 2004 You would think. I would gave rathered have that one than the Sting or Dusty match.
