Phoenix Fury Legdrop 0 Report post Posted November 27, 2004 So, I just got my new computer on Thursday all hooked up, which includes a DVD burner. I have something on my hard drive that I want to burn onto DVD, so I get it all formatted and crap for the DVD. I put the blank DVD into the DVD drive, shut it, and click around to the point where it's ready to burn...and it says that there's no disc in the drive. So, I open it up and try again with another blank DVD. No dice. I go through this with all ten of the blank DVD's that I have, and NONE of them work. So I ask all of you, what the hell is up? (For info's sake, I got Target-branded "E-Gear" DVD-R's, Phillips DVD8421 drive, and am using Intervideo's WinDVD program.) Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

Jobber of the Week 0 Report post Posted November 29, 2004 WinDVD is a DVD player. It plays DVD movies like you buy at Wal-Mart or whatever. It is not a burning application, so you might be using the wrong kind of program. If you don't have a burning program, a very basic one is built into WindowsXP if all you want to make is a data disc (i.e. files you can move from computer to computer, but can't play in any DVD player box). Insert the blank disc, copy the files to the DVD drive in My Computer, and then open up that drive and choose Burn DVD. Again, if you want to watch a movie on a DVD player hooked up to your TV or something, it's going to be more work and will require getting an actual burning program. Never buy a pre-installed DVD burner. Computer manufacturers often have exclusive deals with DVD burner manufacturers, which means you get proprietary crap. Which leads to Mistakes 2 & 3... Target-branded "E-Gear" DVD-R's, Phillips DVD8421 drive # 2 being, "Don't buy cheap media," and # 3 being, "It's a Philips drive, stupid - it only burns DVD+R, not DVD-R." Philips is one of the big supporters of the DVD+R format, so much so that they do not make dual FORMAT drives. You have a dual LAYER drive - one that burns DVD+R9 discs - but not one that burns DVD-R discs. Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

As long as they burn major media, meaning either - and/or + discs, what's to be afraid of? In the case of laptops, you don't really have much of a choice.
