Clear Channel tunes in Fox News as primary news provider

Clear Channel Radio has inked a five-year deal to have Fox News Radio serve as its primary national news service for more than 100 of its news/talk stations beginning in 2005.

Clear Channel Radio, a subsidiary of San Antonio-based Clear Channel Communications Inc. (NYSE: CCU), currently gets national news feeds from a variety of providers.

The agreement with Clear Channel Radio is the first major affiliate group deal for Fox News Radio and positions it to be a direct competitor with ABC Radio and CBS Radio.

Fox's new full-service news offering will feature talent from its Fox News Channel and will include a five-minute top-of-the-hour newscast, a nightly news broadcast and 24-hour national news coverage.

Under the agreement, Fox will also have access to news produced by Clear Channel's more than 500 local news journalists.

"Working this closely with a premier national news provider for the majority of our news/talk stations makes overwhelming sense," says John Hogan, CEO of Clear Channel Radio.

"Because of the breadth of this relationship, our local news directors will get a more customized and higher quality national news product."

If all options are exercised, the Clear Channel Radio deal could bring the Fox News Radio affiliate count to more than 500 by mid-2005.

Fox News is owned by News Corp. (NYSE: NWS).
