Funaki: SmackDown's No. 1 Cruiserweight

By Anthony Cali

ATLANTA, GA – With more than seven years of WWE experience behind him, Funaki finally won the big one. In one of the most action-packed matches of the night, the man known as SmackDown!’s #1 Announcer defeated Spike Dudley to win the Cruiserweight Championship for the first time in his illustrious career.

After picking up the 1-2-3 with a clever roll-up, Funaki embarked on an emotional celebration that rocked the foundation of the Gwinnett Center. With his newly won prize in his hands, the Japanese Superstar hugged and shook hands with all of his broadcast colleagues, before dancing up the aisle and coming backstage, where a group of well-wishers were gathered together to congratulate him.

“Wow, I can’t believe this,” Funaki said, still gasping after getting off the phone with family members in Japan, to spread news of his shocking victory. “First I become #1 SmackDown! Announcer, and now I become #1 Cruiserweight Champion. I was a definite underdog, even after winning the Battle Royal last week, so I think that my win is a big surprise to many. Even I can’t believe it.”

There was an entirely different mood in Spike Dudley’s locker room. The boss of the Dudley clan is still in shock, and counting the days before he receives a rematch.

“No I’m not excited for Funaki,” Spike snapped. “This was a fluke, and it just goes to prove that on any given day, any lucky ignorant punk can beat one of the finest athletes in the world. At Armageddon, Funaki pulled off the biggest upset of his career, of his life, or of anything he could ever imagine. And he just happened to beat me by the skin of his teeth.”

Funaki and Spike’s reactions to the title change aren’t the only thing that is different; both Superstars have completely separate ideas of what kind of champion Funaki is going to make.

“I think I’m going to be like Shawn Michaels,” Funaki continued while gazing wide-eyed at the glistening title baring his name. “He was such a resilient champion, and he always makes people hot, and makes people chant his name. But instead of chanting ‘H-B-K,’ they will be chanting ‘Fu-na-ki, Fu-na-ki.’”

“You wanna know what kind of Cruiserweight Champion he’s going to make?” pondered Spike. “He’s going to make a very short-lived one, because the next time I get him in the ring, and get a rematch, I’ll make sure that Funaki becomes the former Cruiserweight Champion. I’m gonna hurt him worse, I’m gonna make him ugly, and I’m gonna send him back to Japan, you watch and see.”
