Guest Vitamin X Posted December 18, 2004 Report Posted December 18, 2004 I just got DSL and I want to set it up to another computer, but my DSL company offers some shit about Home Networking Plus. This is probably a stupid question, but I don't think that service is necessary just to run a wireless router to that computer as well so it also gets DSL access, right? Or do you guys who have networks with multiple computers on broadband have to pay a fee to your DSL provider for Home Networking? Also, what's a good (and cheap, preferably) wireless router for the house, along with any other equipment I'll probably need for the job? Any help would be appreciated.
MrRant Posted December 19, 2004 Report Posted December 19, 2004 If you buy through them then they more than likely will support your multiple connections whilst doing it yourself you do your own tech support. If you aren't looking to transfer files inbetween computers a bunch and just want to surf/download files then the Linksys "B" BEFW11S4 for like $48 bucks + a wireless nic which would cost about another ~$20. If you plan to transfer large files between computers IN YOUR HOUSE, then you would want a "G" router which is about $20-30 more than the "B"
Guest Vitamin X Posted December 19, 2004 Report Posted December 19, 2004 Yeah, fuck tech support. I'm a DIYer, especially when it comes to computer/electronic installation of mostk inds. I'd probably get the G-router since I'd want to transfer files for use with a printer that's hooked up to the other computer. So, well that's good to know my DSL provider can't rip me off an extra $10 a month for a "free" firewall and tech support.

Jesus! Look in your Sunday CompUSA or other retailer ads for deals. My Dad got a wireless G router and a G card for less than that. We also equipped our house with B connections earlier thanks to another clearance.
MrRant Posted December 20, 2004 Report Posted December 20, 2004 I don't like quoting specials as it's not all areas. Just the general prices yo.
