Goldberg/Bret in Canada

Recommended Posts

Guest Catcher8C

I just DL'ed the clip from nitro where Bret Hart calls Goldberg out and uses the chest piece....I have to say, even though they were on the downturn that was some crazy good TV IMO. From the promo by Hart and the crazy face heat he was getting to the end when he said "I quit." Man, I forgot how awesome Bret could be, even in the WCW days.

Was there ever follow up after this angle?

Bret quit, and an angle was set to have Bret/Nash face off on The Tonight Show, until Owen's death, which occured the day before the show's match was to occur.

Bret would eventually come back, obviously as a face, to have a classic with Benoit (see Benoit's DVD). He would remain a face, winning the World title until he turned heel in December.

No Bischoff/Bret feud (why Bret "quit") ever played out. Bret would actually next see Bischoff in April 2000, saving him from an attack by Hollywood Hogan. Although Bret's active wrestling career was over by then, as he suffered from post-concussion syndrome due to a stiff superkick from Bill Golbderg at Starrcade 1999, and reaggrevation of the injury at the hands of Terry Funk a few weeks after.

The super-kick was the nail in the coffin. Didn't Hart suffer a couple of concussions in that 1 match thanks to Goldberg being too fucking sloppy? I'm sure nearly ripping the head off Hart was bad enough, but the multiple concussions probably didn't help.

I once got my e-mail to Dave Meltzer about this topic posted in his feedback column.

The first concusssion happened from the kick, but the real damage was done by Bret continuing to wrestle on it instead of seeing a doctor (He never did until after the Funk match).

When he was finally diagnosed with post concussion syndrome the doctors told him that he had numerous concussions on top of the original one, to the point that they couldn't know exactly how many he had.

Have you ever had a bruise on your arm or leg? You know how if you keep hitting the area that's bruised then the bruise only gets bigger and takes that much longer to heal?

Well a concussion is like a bruise on your brain. When someome like a wrestler or football player gets a concussion and dosn't take the time to fully heal, the odds of getting another one and making it worse only get better and better.

By continuing to wrestle after the Goldberg match, Bret got concussion on top of concussion to the point that he had to retire because he still hasn't fully healed (an he probably never will) and it may have contributed to his having a stroke.

I'm not even a big Goldberg fan, but when people say that Bret carrer ended because of "Clumsy Bill Goldberg's careless kick", it's just not accurate.

It also reminds me of how guys like HHH, Nash, and Wade Keller will call Goldberg, Jericho, and RVD careless and sloppy in the ring as an excuse to ignore the fans wishes and throw money away.

Well he almost ripped Harts head off, and causing serious (permanent) damage to the muscles in his neck, so yes, Goldberg is pretty damn sloppy and was a main factor in Hart's injuries.

That's a good point about the Hart-Goldberg deal, that a lot of people either don't see or refuse to see. A lot of the damage to Hart was his own fault, simply because he never went to the doctor to get checked out. Head problems are the one kind you simply don't try to gut out, and this is a fine example of why. I'm a big Bret fan, but he has to carry some of the blame for his career ending problems.

Bret got multiple concussions in that Goldberg match. I think he actually passed out in the hotel that night.

One was the kick, the 2nd was at the ringpost figure four spot and the third I forget where it happened out. He than got more concussions in his following matches.

Bret talked about how he had to fight just to get this one angle to get through. I forgot where but I also remembering his saying how Bishoff had to talk to Hogan about something before they could go through with this angle (can't remember if it was this one or a different angle he was talking about). Than when Hogan apparantly approved Bishoff had the biggest sigh of relief ever on his face. Interesting stuff.

Bret talks about that in his second RF Shoot. Eric wanted Hogan to enter the ring after Goldberg was down, pretend like he was pleased with what Bret did, and then suckerpunch him and beat Bret up. Bret refused, pointing that, not only did it make no sense for that to happen, but that Eric had already agreed to the angle as is.

Kevin Nash also wanted in on the angle. As a way to bury Bret, but presented as otherwise, obviously, Nash wanted to lay Bret out, and do an angle playing off of Nash being a heel booker. Bret shoot that down, again pointing out that it didn't make sense and that they'd already agreed on what was going to happen.

I can never resist dissing RF Video.

Stay far away kids. Horrable service and insane prices = get your wrestling stuff somewheres else. I can tell you horror stories.

Bret talked about this in one of his Calgary Sun Columns as well.
