Sonic Mega Collection

Recommended Posts

Does anyone else here have this game? If so, is there a way to make Sonic & Knuckles compatible with Sonic 2 & 3? I can't seem to make that work. Is this game yet another letdown?

I got it for 5 bucks at Circuit City for the Gamecube and I wouldn't have paid any more for it. It doesn't even have the Game Gear games that the other console versions have which were the only Sonic Games I remember playing since that was the only Sega system I had)

I don't really understand why anyone would pay money for this when you can get everything on that disc online for absolutely nothing, including ROMs that emulate Sonic & Knuckles equipped with Sonic 2 & Sonic 3.

Some people like to own things legally.

Anyway you unlock sonic and knuckles connected to sonic 2 and 3 by playing certain games a certain number of numbers. If I recall all you have to really do is just load the game, then exit to count it as one play. For Sonic 2 with knuckles load sonic 2 and sonic spinball I think 20 times each, for Sonic 3 with knuckles load sonic 3 and sonic and knuckles 20 times each. You can unlock a few other games by loading the other games a bunch too. Just keep loading a game over and over until it stops saving, that's when you'll know you've opened that one all you need to (if I'm remembering correctly, it's been awhile. One day I just sat down and opened every game all the billion times they needed until I'd unlocked everything).

Sonic 1 GG is okay for it's time but not worth a damn now, Chaos was decent but likewise a "meh" now, and Sonic Blast and Labyrinth are absolutely terrible.

Labyrinth is weird...it's a 3/4 overhead maze game type thing absolutely devoid of anything memorable, and Sonic Blast is has GIGNORMOUS CGI SPRITES that take up too much of the screen, control terribly, and have awful collision detection.

They should have included Sonic 2 GG, perhaps the hardest and best of the GG Sonics.

The Game Gear Sonics are on Sonic DX though, all of them, even the import-only ones we didn't get.

The best Portable Sonic of all time, though, is still IMO Sonic Pocket Adventure for Neo Geo Pocket Color. It's basically the Genesis Sonic 2 with some level redesigns and added secrets (puzzle pieces).

Smues pretty much answered, yeah. You have to "play" certain titles so many times--GameFAQs has the full list of what to do for each.

I'd rather play games on a console than a computer, myself. Everyone knows about the ROMs. Although I'll admit that it's a weak collection when you consider that the Saturn Sonic Jam actually added more interesting content like Sonic World, the movies, Spin Dash in Sonic 1, galleries, etc.

The only bonus material it retains from Jam is the manuals, but Jam had the English *and* Japanese manuals (which had concept art in it).

The original SMC for GC was put out when they *thought* they could pull off a good emulation of Sonic CD with it, but they couldn't, and ended up just releasing the half-assed SMC we know of.

Ok, I just unlocked those 2 games with Knuckles. But, I'm real dissappointed that Sonic CD wasn't included in the mega collection.

Join the club.

Sadly, the PC version doesn't work on Windows XP correctly and I've been having a bitch of a time getting the Sega CD version emulated on my PC. Thankfully I still have an older computer around with W98 that plays the PC one fine.

If you think the US Sonic CD music was good, the Japanese Sonic CD music was even better.

Not necessarily. I don't care for techno all that much, and "Toot-Toot Sonic Warrior" was "ech" to me.

They left the "past" music intact, though. Supposedly the Japanese music during the levels actually plays off the Genesis sound chip.

I take it back actually. I have a soft spot for the US boss and Stardust Speedway music

Toot-toot sonic warrior was great, nothing like crappy jpop on remastered game gear music.

Disagree with Sonic 1, for a 8 bit handheld game it still looks and plays well, and still beats any of the Gba sonics by a long way.

Hardest yes, but best? Insanely stupid level design and bosses, goofy sonic animation and pretty awful control.

Heh, I guess not playing a game in nearly 10 years will distort your memories like that. Sonic 1 GG is playable, but if it wasn't Sonic would we give it so much as a second thought today?

Although the game reminds me of one of the few times X-Play pissed me off when they showed that you could complete Act one of Green Hill on the GG Sonic 1 in about 30 seconds by just running and jumping once in a while. No kidding, that's virtually every first act in the first levels of every Sonic game.

The EEEEEVIL Robotnik music kicks, Palmtree Panic's music really sucked me into the game, and I have few/no complaints about most of the other tracks.

Sonic Boom is a cheeseball, 80-ish track, so it has a charm to it IMO.

Nothing to really inspire the vitriol fanboys have spewed about Nielson, IMO. Really, blame the localization folks who wanted the music changed in the first place.

Even with the new Sonic games, that's still the case. See SA1's Emerald Coast, SA2's City Escape and Heroes' Seaside Hill.

Especially the ending version of Sonic Boom. :headbang:

And my favorite GG Sonic? Hmmm....I liked Sonic 1, Triple Trouble and Sonic Blast.
