Titles Switching Hands At House Shows

Recommended Posts

Guest Prof_Plague

I was just wondering, can anybody think of anytime a title has switched hands during a house show?

I could only think of when The Godwins winning the WWF Tag titles agaisnt the Body Donnas back in '96, but that was all that came immediately to my mind.

Can anyone else think of some more examples of when this has happened?

Diesel won the World Title from Bob Backlund in 8 seconds in a match at Madison Square Garden in 94.

Edge won his first IC title at a house show against Jeff Jarrett back in 98.

There are TONS of examples, but the Diesel one is the most note worthy since it started the dreadful Diesel era of 95 and made Bret Hart look like a chump for not being able to beat Backlund in almost an hour when Nash did it in 8 seconds.

I was thinking that. I believe that Booker dropped it due to a back injury about a month after he won it in a Battle Royal with Christian being the last man he eliminated. Christian cut his hair the next night.

Yes, Christian beat Booker T to regain the IC title at a house show, I believe in Des Moines, Iowa, although how I remember that (assuming it's correct) I do not know. The title change took place in early-mid August for sure because I was up in Canada when I read about it.

Bret Hart won his first WWF title from Ric Flair at a house show in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, in 1992.

Booker T and Chris Benoit traded the TV title on consecutive days at WCW house shows in early May 1998. Booker was the champion and he dropped the belt to Benoit. Benoit lost it the next day, Booker regained it, Benoit won it again, Booker regained it again. Booker lost it to Fit Finlay on Nitro the following day. I'm pretty sure that's how it went down.

There are others, including the ones already listed, but that's all that I can recall right now. I'm not counting the WWF Hardcore title since it changed hands 47.3 billion times per second.

Actually Dames, CHRISTIAN won the battle royal. He retained, after a DQ loss, against Book at Bad Blood. They had a few TV matches with Book getting screwed, before he finally won on Raw. Then, Book got screwed up, and dropped it at a house show a couple of weeks before SummerSlam.

Bret's win was at a TV taping. That doesn't count.

The Disasters' win was also at a taping. It was the same taping that had the Savage / Bret vs. Flair / HBK match.

The Steiners' first title win was at a taping but it never aired for whatever reason.

Christian's win over Bradshaw was at a Smackdown taping. I heard it didn't make the show due to time restrains. Dumb reason to not air a title change.

The Mountie's win over Bret was at a house show in Springfield, MA.

Tito's win over Valentine in the cage was at a house show in Baltimore. Yes, the match was taped but to have cameras in Baltimore at that time was a rarity and of all the matches held that night, I think that's the only one that was shown.

There have been a few times where the titles "changed" hands at a house show only for the decision never to be aknowledged. The Rougeaus beating the Harts for the belts in Montreal in 87 would be an example of that.

HBK & Diesel winning the straps from the Headshrinkers.

Hate to be nitpicky. It was 99. The night before Fully Loaded. ;)

I think I have Vader beating Sting in Dublin on tape somewhere. I'll have to double check (Not Hand-Held).

All my matches listed, although held at TV tapings, still weren't televised. They could still be put on tv or tapes or whatever, but still...:D

Ah...but I didn't say house show. I said untelevised for all.

Diesle/Backlund technically was aired... 1000 times the week it happend, so I retract that one.

Shawn/Diesel won the tag titles from the Headshrinkers the night before Summerslam 94 in Indianapolis. I was there, my first live show ever.

Do you happen to recall how they won them?

You're totally right. The last year and a half has been an absolute blur.

I'm pretty sure there was a title switch and switch back again with the CW title in WCW in early 2000 between Kidman and TAFKAPI

TAFKAPI backwards is I PAK FAT, which, in Iaukeas case, isn't a fale statement.

JOHN BRADSHAW LAYFIELD, before being the WWE Champion, managed to lose the coveted WWE EUROPEAN TITLE to Christian at a non-televised Smackdown! match.

How do you explain that?

It's a non-televised match...but it's not a house show.

Christian seems to be the king of winning titles and not having them seen.

I want to say it was a belt shot, but I'm not positive.

I don't recall that, and besides, Kidman was way up the card in 2000.

What I do recall (and what you may be thinking of) is that when Lenny Lane was Cruiserweight Champion with the flamboyant/homosexual gimmick, WCW was getting lots of shit for it. Thus, they gave the CW title to Psicosis, who showed up on Nitro with the belt. They declared that he had beaten Lenny at a house show the previous Saturday. Psicosis then proceeded to job the belt that night on Nitro.

I'm pretty sure that's accurate or close to it. I totally forgot about the whole ordeal until I read your post.

Psicosis had two cruiser title reigns...he never had one successful title defenses, The first time he beat Blitzkrieg in a 4 way and jobbed it right out...PISSING ME OFF!

I don't know if they ever explained Lenny's title lose. I thought it was "Well fans, there's your cruiserweight champion Psicosis."

Hmm... I really liked Blitzkrieg and I don't remember him having a title reign. Maybe you only meant that he was pinned, not that he was the champion.

I'm 99% sure about the Lane/Psicosis title change, though. I need to find a site with a detailed title history to verify all of this 100%.

From my website...

Psychosis defeated Rey Mysterio, Jr., Juventud Guerrera, and Blitzkrieg in a "Four Corners" match on 04/19/99 in Gainesville, Florida to win the title.

* Psychosis pinned Blitzkrieg to win the title.

Psychosis is awarded the title on 10/04/99 in Kansas City, Missouri to become champion for the 2nd time.

* Lenny was removed from television by WCW due to he and tag team partner Lodi's controversial characters. Psychosis was awarded the title off-camera, with the announcers stating he "recently won the title". No such match ever took place.

HOUSE SHOWS

Chris Jericho defeated Syxx on 06/28/97 in Inglewood, California to win the title.

Billy Kidman defeated The Artist Formerly Known as Prince Iaukea on 03/30/00 in Baltimore, Maryland to win the title for the 3rd time.

The Artist Formerly Known as Prince Iaukea defeated Billy Kidman on 03/31/00 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to win the title for the 2nd time.

They did do a title switch between Kidman and the Artist in early 2000. However, it was never mentioned on TV, which they did a lot in WCW, having champions lose and regain titles at house shows and ignoring the changes on TV.

As for Lenny, they were planning to have him appear on the 10/4 Nitro not acting gay or flamboyant at all and job the title, but they decided it would be best not to have him on TV, so they claimed he lost the title at a house show, and then had Psychosis lose the title to Disco later that night. WCW later removed Lenny's name from the CW title history on wcw.com, so as to claim that his reign never took place, but later they put him back on there.

didn't something happen off camera between Alex Wright and Ultimo Dragon or Alex Wright and Chris Jericho back in mid 1997. I remember reading somewhere... Maybe it was just matches taped before Wright won the title, on Saturday Night when he(Wright) was champion, but they would only show from the waist up cuz he didnt have the Title at that point.

I saw both of those title changes with Wright, so they were televised.

He won the title from Jericho, defended it at Road Wild, then lost it on Saturday Night (I think).

Then Wright beat Dragon at the CotC, beat him again at Fall Brawl, then lost it to Disco on Nitro.
