Dennis Erickson fired

Two sources close to the San Francisco 49ers told SportsLine.com on Wednesday that the club has fired Dennis Erickson as its head coach.

The move ends two turbulent seasons for Erickson -- who was 9-23 with the club -- including a franchise worst 2-14 this season -- and was anticipated for weeks. Owner John York asked Erickson to fire some of his assistants, and when the head coach balked, speculation centered on Erickson's dismissal.

The club is expected to make an announcement later Wednesday.

Erickson was hired in 2003 to replace Steve Mariucci, fired after the 49ers reached the playoffs the previous two seasons

Thank God.

This was THE WORST coaching move ever. The man had a 31-33 record in the NFL before he went to the Niners, and has a 40-56 record after leaving them.

Granted in college football he has a .650 winning record, but there is a big difference between college and NFL, as we all know.

He is gone, and thank God for that.

Now who to replace him?

I know I said that just because you are a good college football coach, doesn't mean you'll be a good NFL coach, but what about Pete Carroll?

He'll get you 5 wins at the most. Pro players don't respect him. I don't miss the Pete Carroll era in New England AT ALL.

Norm Chow needs to go through the progressions and become an NFL o-Cooridinator before he even tastes head coaching. I'm praying that New England somehow gets him to replace Weis.

I completly forgot he was at the Jets and Pats.

My Pops, right after I said he should go to the Niners, laughed at me and asked if I wanted 2 more horrible years.

Who's available with a Winning NFL coaching record for S.F to be talking about?

Jimmy Johnson? He turned down better offers then that shitty franchise...

I hope they aren't thinking of pulling a Washington and getting Walsh back.

I think they would have a better shot of getting Seifert than Walsh. Walsh is content being a consultant now.

Don't Art Shell and Butch Davis both need work?

Hell, as much as I hate to say it, but it's time the Pats D-coordinator gets his shot. But not with this damn team.

San Fran is a mess and I wouldn't wish that franchise on my worst enemy.

Davis isn't getting a job right after the debacle in Cleveland. He'll wait out a year and take over some mid-card big conference team in the College Ranks for 2 years and reestablish him for the League.

SF might get Holmgren if he's ousted in Seattle. Also maybe Romeo Crennel or Mike Nolan.

I wouldn't be surprised to see Indi's O-Cooridinator or Tampa's D-Cooridinator looked at. I doubt Kiffin really wants to hang out with Gruden any longer.

They need to get Romeo Crennel, I guess going the first time coach is a mixed bag, but I'm thinking that he will do good, because their defense is their stronger point and that he has just as much to prove as his players, they may respect that.
