monkey Posted January 10, 2005 Report Posted January 10, 2005 Does anyone know of a good web site that goes through and rates the different graphics cards against each other. I am thinking of getting a new PC soon and the graphics card is giving me a headache. What I am really looking for is whether the cost of a more powerful card is worth the extra cost. I cant really afford the last Radeon but would like to know how the other cards rate against each other. Thank you for any suggestions.
GeneMean Posted January 10, 2005 Report Posted January 10, 2005 Tom's Hardware Benchmarks That help? Those are only for AGP cards I believe. I didn't do any searching for PCI express benchmarks.
monkey Posted January 11, 2005 Author Report Posted January 11, 2005 Thanks for that, just what I was looking for.
Dr. Tom Posted January 11, 2005 Report Posted January 11, 2005 Another good site for hardware things of all kinds is HardOCP.
monkey Posted January 11, 2005 Author Report Posted January 11, 2005 Thanks for the site, although I am still not sure what is the best performance versus cost graphics card out there. Can anyone suggest a mid range graphics card from their own experience? Thanks again.
ZGangsta Posted January 12, 2005 Report Posted January 12, 2005 The general consensus seems to be the NVidia GeForce 6600GT (either the APG or PCI-E versions) in terms of best bang for your buck midrange cards. It's about 200 US$ I believe. You can get a 6800 for a bit more or a 6600 for a bit less, but the 6600GT seems to be the sweet spot. I bought one recently (Chaintech version) and I'm very happy with it. It also depends on the rest of your computer. I have a P4 2.0 (Overclocked to 2.6), but if I had a faster processor, I probably would have gotten a more expensive video card. Hope that helps.
Hawkius Maximus Posted January 12, 2005 Report Posted January 12, 2005 Not to hijack the thread...I'm in the process of updating some of the more dire areas needed for my PC. Memory and Video card being the main two. I've been looking at http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc....-130-186&depa=1 which was suggested in an earlier thread. The question I pose however, is this card powerful enough to run things like Unreal Tournament 2k4 with decent results or Madden 2005? My current peice of crap Intregrated Card can play UT2k4 somewhat, but it outright dies if I try Madden. If that card isn't powerful enough, I guess I could look into a more expensive card using the tests from Tom's Hardware.
