Bored 0 Report post Posted January 14, 2005 I just recently discovered a site called FootballOutsiders.com. It's football statistical site of the likes of BaseballProspectus.com. Here's a link to their quarterback rankings for 2004: http://www.footballoutsiders.com/stats/qb.php Using their metrics DPAR (Defense-adjusted Points Above Replacement) and DVOA (Defense-adjusted Value Over Average) for strictly passing statistics, Vick ranks 35th and 36th respectively below the likes of Billy Volek and Ken Dorsey. Now they have a seperate table for quraterbacks rushing statistics and Vick comes out on top of course. I haven't added up the numbers but from the looks of it even if you factor in Vick's rushing ability he would still be outside the Top 20 quarterbacks in the league, at least by their standards. Spaceman Spiff 0 Report post Posted January 14, 2005 OK, here's a Vick-related question that I heard on one of those NFL shows. Would you rather have Vick for a shortened career, but he does he madman-run-out-of-the-pocket routine, or would you rather have him stay in the pocket and curb his running while getting a few extra playing years? I'd take the former -- go with what got you there... Gotta go with the latter. Look at the Eagles & McNabb - McNabb severely cut down on his scrambling, and has become a much better QB. Consequently, the Eagles have been to 2 NFC conf. champ. games, and had the best record in the NFC the last 2 years.
Shanghai Kid 0 Report post Posted January 14, 2005 I think somebody brought it up earlier, but Micheal Vick flat out wins games. Bring up his stats and everything else, at the end of the day your looking at a guy who is a WINNER. Don't be surprised if he takes the Falcons to the Superbowl. I could care less about the guys passer rating, why be a football smark? When watching the game it's easy to see that Vick flat out makes amazing plays. If I was an opposing coach I would never want to face a Vick led team in the playoffs because even if you have a solid gameplan Vick can just out of nowhere make a play that changes the whole game around. Winner, winner, winner. He sells tickets and wins games. He's the most entertaining athlete in sports. Let ESPN hype him, but YOU watch the game and tell me that he isn't the most dangerous player on the field.
The Man in Blak 0 Report post Posted January 15, 2005 I haven't added up the numbers but from the looks of it even if you factor in Vick's rushing ability he would still be outside the Top 20 quarterbacks in the league, at least by their standards. It really all depends on how you value rushing yards for a quarterback. Is Vick getting a bunch of rushing yards because he's scrambling outside of a pocket, turning broken plays into positive gains...or is he getting a bunch of rushing yards because he refuses (or is entirely unable) to read the defense effectively? For Vick, I suspect the reality lies more towards the latter, but that doesn't necessarily make him a poor quarterback. Sure, checking down is undeniably a crucial part of quarterbacking, but the position is all about risk management: trying to milk eight yards out of a check down is a little riskier (incompletion, or interception) than just taking the ball and running for five or six when you have the athletic ability that Vick has. In either case, Vick still has plenty of room to improve. He's barely a top 20 quarterback, which still makes him egregiously overrated when you weigh in the ludicrous amount of praise that is directed his way. The writer who gave him an MVP vote should be fired for incompetence. So? He only scored 3 TDs with those 902 rushing yards as well. Plus he lost 266 yards due to sacks. And also fumbled 16 times and lost 7 of those. That's hardly impressive. Well, the 3 rushing TDs isn't necessarily a reliable total, considering that the Falcons are always going to turn to their running back, not their quarterback, in a goal line situation. Vick already puts himself at enough risk for injury; there's no need to pile it on through goal line carries. The 266 yards that he lost due to sack, however, are a very telling sign. Those are situations where he could have thrown the ball away (remember, risk management). And the number of fumbles, if it's correct, is absolutely inexcusable - any tailback with that bad of fumble-itis would have been benched without a second thought. Guest Smues Report post Posted January 15, 2005 Can you also lead a mediocre team, with an overhyped coaching staff, to an 11-5 record and spank Brett Favre's ass at Lambeau? That sounds like a fun ride. 9-7 Unless you're combining the 2002 and the 2004 teams, in which case nevermind. Um.... no...... I believe their record is 11-5. Spanking Favre's ass at Lambeau was after a 9-7 season.
