Playing DIVX files on the comp

So I just downloaded a movie, which apparently said .divx even though it has an .avi extension, and all I get is the audio instead of the video. Anyone else ever have this problem or at least know what could be wrong?

You need the DivX codec probably. It's on the above link or DivX.com

Also, nto your question, but something that took me a while to figure out... if you have a DivX file with video but no audio, you need to install the AC-3 codec for audio. Took me WEEKS and tons of abandoned LimeWire transfers to figure THAT one out!

Nonags gave me a very quick solution, as did razateca there (thanks again dude), not sure how good GSpot is, but AVICodec not only scans the file but links you to the codec you need immediately if it finds you need something.

If you download FFDshow, you can play all these files without having to download the codecs. It's an open source project that also lets you get advanced playback options, AND keep your system from getting cluttered with codecs.

Almost nobody should ever have to download a codec for Divx/Xvid, or whatever other AVI codec. The only reason you need to download a real codec is if you're playing to MAKE movies, but this will work if you just want to play them.

On the other hand, you will still need the codec for OGG/OGM if you plan to get those.
