Barret Robbins shot multiple times by police...

MIAMI BEACH, Fla. --- Former Pro Bowl center Barret Robbins was shot several times when he struggled with a police officer investigating a burglary at a South Beach office.

Robbins was taken to a hospital Saturday night in critical condition. The former Oakland Raiders offensive lineman, who went AWOL during the 2003 Super Bowl, remained in critical condition on Sunday, Robbins' agent Drew Pittman told ESPN's Andrea Kremer.

Miami Beach police said Robbins was confronted by a detective investigating a burglary report in a building that houses a nightclub, gym and jewelry store. Robbins and the detective had a "violent struggle" before Robbins was shot, police spokesman Bobby Hernandez said.

"The officer was literally fighting for his life, trying to get Mr. Robbins from getting his gun. That's when the shots rang out," Hernandez said.

Robbins, 31, was shot several times in the torso, Hernandez said. Detective Mike Muley, who fired the shots, had minor head injuries from the scuffle and was treated and released from a hospital.

Robbins was taken to Ryder Trauma Center at Jackson Memorial Hospital.

Hernandez said Robbins had not yet been charged in the case because authorities had not been able to interview him.

Robbins was last in trouble as recently as Christmas Eve, when he was arrested on battery and drunk and disorderly conduct charges in San Francisco after allegedly hitting a nightclub security guard.

He allegedly struck the guard after he was told the bar he was trying to enter was closed, according to the San Francisco Sheriff's Department.

The often-troubled player is best remembered for disappearing the night before the 2003 Super Bowl in San Diego. Bill Callahan, then Oakland's coach, said Robbins was incoherent and didn't know where he was when he showed up Saturday night before the game.

Robbins spent Super Bowl Sunday in a hospital and later acknowledged that he had stopped taking his medicine for depression and bipolar disorder. The Raiders lost 48-21 to Tampa Bay.

Robbins was released by Oakland in July, a week after he and two other players were fined three game checks for testing positive for the steroid THG.

He also had failed an Oakland-administered physical exam due to injury before asking for his release.

Robbins showed a renewed dedication to the Raiders and his teammates following several months of difficulty following that Super Bowl. He is a recovering alcoholic and was subsequently diagnosed with bipolar disorder. He spent 31 days at the Betty Ford Center and was determined to repair his image -- and to return to the Raiders alongside a few teammates who initially didn't want him back.

Robbins played all nine of his pro seasons with Oakland and made the Pro Bowl after the 2002 season, but did not play in the game. A year after missing the final 14 games of 2001 with an injured right knee, he was a pivotal part of an offensive line that helped the Raiders produce the league's top offense.

As a Raiders fan who knows this guys past, and pyschological issues, this really isn't a surprise at all.

Don't you have to stop drinking for a period of time to be a "recovering" alcoholic?

As someone who admits to having pyshcological problems, wouldn't you think that him being an alcoholic is not really the problem at hand?

He's supposedly bi-polar, and that aint something easy to deal with. If you notice alot of his trouble comes in the winter months. Bi-Polar people are affected by the amount of sunlight they get.

Still, it appears that rather than take steps to get better he's just off doing all sorts of weird shit. He knows and admits to having pyschological issues...from there you really gotta work at it to get it better. Take your meds, go to therapy, and in his case get a light therapy lamp. You sit infront of it for 15-30min every morning and gives off the type of light needed to get the certain chemical in the brain to react.

There's no doubt he has psychological issues, but alcohol isn't the correct way to treat it at all. I think he needs to be placed in a psych ward for 6months so people can get him down the right path.

He obviosuly doesn't want help. My main point, which wasn't too insult you, was that being an alcoholic seems to be a minor part of a much much bigger problem.

Oh, I agree totally. I was just bashing their use of "recovering alcoholic" since you need to stop drinking for a bit to be considered a recovering one. From where I sit he's an alcoholic with a slew of other psychological issues.

Losing Robbins before the Super Bowl left the Raiders in a tough spot after they put in their back-up rookie Center in to replace him. Of course, things didn't pan out well and the line fell apart during the worst time to.

The guy had some serious inner demons. Getting dumped by the team after getting caught with some enhancement drugs sealed his fate. It's too bad he couldn't get his shit together because he was a hell of a leader for that team.
