Would a 30-Team Stanley Cup Tournament work?

Recommended Posts

It'd be too much of a clusterfuck for me to quote each thing that I want to respond to, so I'll just type if out normally and try to refer to who or what I'm responding to ...

Dogbert's intentions of contracting the Rangers in lieu of a team in Saskatoon or Houston makes me wonder if he's really a hockey fan. Seriously, contracting an original six team to put another one in Texas?!? I don't care how pitiful the Rangers (or Blackhawks, for that matter) get, they're an original six franchise and thus should be considered safer-than-safe.

Putting half the teams in Canada is not a wise decision ... there should be more than the six there are now, but to contract SO many American teams in order to put more in small towns in Canada is unwise. Not that hockey gets a lot of coverage in the US, but it'd be entirely ignored if it was so Canadian-based. Just contract some of the riff-raff US teams, add in 2 Canadian teams (hmm, how abotu returning to Winnipeg & Quebec City, two cities that never should have been stripped of hockey) and leave it as a 24 team league.

And make that a 24 team league without Gary Bettman anywhere near it.

Have 8 of the 24 teams make the playoffs, and seed them 1-8, not Cambells & Wales (yes, we're going back to the pre-East & West days). I think the teams with the best record getting home ice throughout the playoffs is reward enough.

If UndertakerHart said KC needs a team he'll eat his words when the Duck move there

Kansas City just built (or is building) a new arena and is looking for a team to rent it. Everyone on Ducks' Board is concerned about this but Anaheim has 20 years left on its contract with city. Should the Angels leave soon, Anaheim will have the Ducks left which is pathetic because at one time we had a football team. Anaheim should something about its teams leaving.

Absolutly Nothing.

It's near February and are they still trying to salvage a season?

Here's how I'd run it.

26 Teams in an 74 game schedule. No additions to new cities, just six teams filed for bankruptcy or folded (Carolina, Atlanta, Nashville, Florida)

No touch icing.

No overtime losses

No instagating rule

goal line is 10 feet from the back of the board.

Goalie pads at 12 inches max. Goalie can handle the puck, and when the goalie is out of his crease, he's fair game.

A few other things.

Keep the 7-7-7-7 Playoff format. Makes the hardest playoffs to earn the top prize.

A Salary Cap at 42 million dollars (This would avoid parity in the sport, if owners decide to know how to use their money, and greedy players need to take a pay cut.)

Free Agency is a no no unless you want to pay some hefty fines (would eliminate parity as well, and builds dynasties and fan favourites, loyalty). The only exception is when the player reaches 35, he can file for FA without being fined.

If a team wants to exceed the salary cap, its a 45 cent fine on every dollar over. (Team has a 46 million dollar salary, four million over the limit 4,000,000 x .45 = 1.8 million dollar fine.)

These are some examples.

Think about this. A lack of free agency would RUIN parity. When baseball did not have a salary cap, teams like the St. Louis Browns, Phillies, Washington Senators, etc. sucked for DECADES at a time. Without free agency, a team has no quick method of digging itself out of the basement.

Angels won't move, and the Rams were L.A.'s team. In fact, so are the Angels.
