WCW Clash of the Champions 1-24

ffa: Dean Malenko vs Tony Atlas.

The Match: STIFF high kick on Atlas by Dean Malenko. Malenko just WAFFLES Atlas with a STIFF chop that hurt ME to watch! Dean Malenko strikes Atlas. Hooks the leg for a two count. Malenko hits a dropkick on Tony Atlas and gets right back up. There's a two count on the pin. Atlas reverses a waistlock. Atlas scoops and slams Dean Malenko. What's the difference between a scoop slam and a body slam anyway? Covers for a quick two count. Tony Atlas hits a bulldog off the ropes. Dean Malenko reverses a hip toss. Power drive elbow by Dean Malenko. That sounds like a feature on a 4 x 4, doesn't it. Dean Malenko floors Tony Atlas. Texas Clover Leaf!!! Tony Atlas taps out!

My Opinion: Do you know what * means? It's the equivalent of buying your favorite soft drink, looking under the cap and seeing 'Sorry, Try again.' At least you got the soft drink. 63

1. Chris Benoit, Kensuke Sasaki, and Tom Zenk vs Diamond Dallas Page, Scotty Flamingo, and Vinnie Vegas.

The Match: Zenk gets slammed down hard and winces in pain. Flying shoulder tackle by DDP sends Zenk CRASHING to the mat. Tag to Vinnie Vegas. BAAACK Body drop by Zenk gets a bit of a pop from the crowd. Big piledriver on Zenk. There's a two count on the pin. Vegas tags out to Scotty Flamingo. Vegas \ Flamingo hook up Zenk, then hit a double suplex. Tom Zenk charges into the corner, but EATS BOOT and staggers backward. Zenk flips out of a Scotty Flamingo bodyslam attempt. Hard back suplex on Flamingo. Come to think of it, that move had WAY too much power in No Mercy for N64. Tag to Kensuke Sasaki. Vertical suplex by Kensuke Sasaki. Front legsweep slam aka The Stroke by Kensuke Sasaki. Pin, but Flamingo is out just before the three count. Vertical suplex by Kensuke Sasaki. Tag to Chris Benoit. Diamond Dallas Page avoids a Tom Zenk avalanche by getting out of the damn way! Tom Zenk slugs Diamond Dallas Page, sending him down into the corner. While Zenk fires up the crowd, DDP is removing the turnbuckle pad! Tom Zenk comes over...but DDP grabs him by the tights and uses the leverage to slingshot Tom Zenk face first into the exposed steel turnbuckle! Diamond Dallas Page rolls up the stunned Tom Zenk, and even puts his feet on the second rope to add insult to injury! 1....2...3! What a display of cheating from Diamond Dallas Page.

My Opinion: Nothing offensive, but nothing too special either. **1\2 rating. 72

2. The Great Muta vs Cactus Jack.

Match Background: This match is for the WCW US title.

The Match: The Great Muta charges into the corner, but EATS BOOT and staggers backward. Massive backbreaker on Muta and I get happy flashbacks to Bret Hart's Five Moves of DOOM. Hooks the leg for a two count. Muta kicks Cactus Jack in the gut to reverse the momentum. The Great Muta strikes Cactus Jac. Second rope flying axe handle, Cactus Jac goes down. One day, Muta might even consider coming off the top with that. You know...for more impact and stuff. There's a two count on the pin. Springboard dropkick from The Great Muta. Nicely done. Cover, ONE...TWO...NO! I honestly thought that match was going to end right then and there. Implant DDT by The Great Muta! I will always and forever mark out for that move. Cactus Jack is able to duck a clothesline attempt and connect with a counter clothesline. Big piledriver on Muta. There's a two count on the pin. Death valley driver by Cactus Jack! No one executes that move properly anymore. Pinfall attempt: ONE...TWO...NO! I would have bought that as the finish! Flying shoulder tackle by Cactus Jac sends Muta CRASHING to the mat. Muta takes a headbutt from Cactus Jack. Muta powers out of a headlock. Spin kick by The Great Muta to the face sends the opponent FLYING across the ring. Springboard dropkick from The Great Muta. Nicely done. Cactus Jack is in trouble. Here it comes - Shining Wizard. 1....2...3, it's finished. The Great Muta is still in the ring celebrating. Cactus Jack pushes the referee away. Cactus Jack spins Muta around. Cactus Jack hits the Double Arm DDT!

My Opinion: Let me practice my math. 13 quarter stars equal a ***1\4 rating, right? Yeah, it does. That's what you get. 81

3. British Bulldog vs Paul Orndorff.

The Match: Massive backbreaker on Orndorff and I get happy flashbacks to Bret Hart's Five Moves of DOOM. Massive lariat! Stan Hansen would approve. Death valley driver (not to be confused with the DVD 500) by British Bulldog connects and Paul Orndorff is down! Hooks the leg! ONE...TWO...NO! Running knee lift from British Bulldog. Hooks the leg for a two count. Orndorff powers out of a headlock. British Bulldog takes a butterfly suplex from Orndorff. Reverse DDT on Bulldog. Bulldog kicks Paul Orndorff in the gut to reverse the momentum. Orndorff walks into a side slam. Think about how much talent it takes to side slam someone. Nash can do it. Paul Orndorff is in trouble. Running Powerslam! 1....2....3. British Bulldog offers a handshake to Orndorff...but he spits at British Bulldog and walks off!

My Opinion: I'm capable of giving out high star ratings...but only for matches that really deserve it. This one didn't. **1/4. 74

4. Steamboat and Douglas vs The Hollywood Blondes.

Match Background: Steamboat and Douglas are one of the most experienced teams in the promotion. Steamboat and Douglas and The Hollywood Blondes have been feuding recently. The Hollywood Blondes have yet to beat their rivals in the ring since the feud began. This match is for the WCW Tag Team titles.

The Match: Brian Pillman hits a rolling kick on Douglas. Konnan has ruined any chance for me ever enjoying this maneuver again with his shitty execution of it. Flying reverse elbow by Brian Pillman. Hooks the leg for a two count. Tag between Brian Pillman and Steve Austin. Steve Austin scoops up Douglas. Pillman bounces off the ropes and hits a flying Hart Attack clothesline. Rude Awakening neckbreaker on Shane Douglas by Austin. Remember when that was a legit finish? Covers for a quick two count. Austin slams Shane Douglas. Douglas powers out of a headlock. Brutal sit out powerbomb on Austin! Tag between Shane Douglas and Ricky Steamboat. Steamboat hits a dropkick on Steve Austin and gets right back up. Beautiful spinning arm drag out of the corner by Steamboat. Austin counters an arm wringer with an elbow to the side of the head. Tag to Brian Pillman. Steamboat takes a NICE hurrancarana from Brian Pillman. Tiger suplex on Steamboat. No Misawa references from me, I swear. Oh, dammit. Hooks the leg! ONE...TWO...NO! Brian Pillman strikes Steamboat. Ricky Steamboat powers out of a Brian Pillman headlock. Steamboat crushes Pillman with a sweet running senton. The time limit expires, and the referee declares the match a draw. Steamboat and Douglas and The Hollywood Blondes don't look like they've finished! They continue to brawl in and around the ring, not stopping until a host of referees run down the aisle to break them up.

My Opinion: A badly blown spot prevents me from giving out more snowflakes. ***3/4 86

5. Masahiro Chono vs Arn Anderson.

Match Background: This match is for the NWA World title.

The Match: Trying to channel the spirit of Misawa, Arn Anderson ends up chanelling Lex Luger instead and nails a running forearm to the face, minus the steel plate, of course. Anderson scoops and slams Masahiro Chono. What's the difference between a scoop slam and a body slam anyway? Running knee lift from Arn Anderson. Rude Awakening neckbreaker on Masahiro Chono by Anderson. Remember when that was a legit finish? Chono counters a sleeper with a jaw breaker and is able to get free! Arn Anderson takes a butterfly suplex from Chono. Masahiro Chono hits a stalling suplex on Anderson. There's a two count on the pin. Arn Anderson avoids a Masahiro Chono avalanche by getting out of the damn way! Powerful Spear by Arn Anderson. I'd like to see him spear Goldberg, just for my amusement. There's a two count on the pin. DEATH VALLEY DRIVAH~! by Arn Anderson just KILLS Masahiro Chono! Hooks the leg! ONE...TWO...NO! Chono counters a sleeper with a jaw breaker and is able to get free! Chono drives a HARD forearm into the chest of Anderson. Arn Anderson is able to duck a clothesline attempt and connect with a counter clothesline. Running knee lift from Arn Anderson. Masahiro Chono is in trouble. Spinebuster! 1....2....3. Arn Anderson gives a murderous look toward Masahiro Chono...and attacks! Chono gets dropped to the canvas, then battered with a barrage of rights and lefts. Anderson leaves the ring having left Chono down and out.

My Opinion: Almost got a **** match, but was lacking in certain areas, so i'm knocking off a quarter of a star. Yes, there is such a thing as a quarter star. ***3/4. 82

6. Sting vs Rick Rude.

Sting once again takes the advantage after blocking a few punches and connecting with some forearms. Full nelson slam on Rick Rude. There's a two count on the pin. Spear! Rick Rude is down! Pinfall attempt: ONE...TWO...NO! Rude Awakening neckbreaker on Rick Rude by Sting. Remember when that was a legit finish? Sting scoops and slams Rick Rude. What's the difference between a scoop slam and a body slam anyway? Rick Rude kicks Sting in the gut to reverse the momentum. Sting tastes a high angle back suplex. If Spike Lee can sue TNN over the Spike TV nonsense, then Kurt Angle should be able to sue SOMEONE for that. High Angle DDT by Rick Rude just SPIKES Sting down! Sting attacks Rick Rude, and they brawl all around ringside, then into the crowd! They eventually disappear backstage, still fighting.

My Opinion: Ohh, looky. A **3/4 match! 90

Match Background: This match is for the WCW TV title.

The Match: Lord Steven Regal snap suplexes Liger. Liger blocks a kick from Lord Steven Regal. Jushin Thunder Liger connects with a back heel kick on Regal and gets back up quickly. Liger whips Regal into the turnbuckles...and the ref is crushed! Diamond Dust from Jushin Thunder Liger and Regal is out! Cover, but there's no one to count for Jushin Thunder Liger! Lord Steven Regal pulls a mule kick out of nowhere. Big dropkick by Lord Steven Regal, who got a ton of air on the move. My Opinion: Solid bout, but they could do a lot better. *** 72

8. Big Van Vader vs Ron Simmons.

Match Background: Vader and Simmons have been feuding recently. So far, Vader hasn't managed to get a pin or submission over Simmons since the feud started. This match is for the WCW World title.

The Match: Simmons gets slammed down hard and winces in pain. Ron Simmons reverses a hip toss. STIFF~! chop lights up Vader who covers up to try and stop the agonizing PAIN! The ref is bumped, as goes down after accidentally getting caught by an elbow to the face. Powerbomb on Vader. Hooks the leg, but the referee is still out! Simmons charges into the corner but EATS BOOT. Rude Awakening neckbreaker on Ron Simmons by Vader. Remember when that was a legit finish? Nice piledriver on Simmons. There's a two count on the pin. Simmons turns around...and gets planted with a huge chair shot to the head! He is left down and out on the canvas.

My Opinion: Consider yourself lucky, a ****1\4 is hard to get and it was earned every step of the way. Let's see if you can do better now. 91

Another referee comes running down the aisle, and points out the exposed steel turnbuckle to the assigned official. The referee reverses the decision! He is disqualifying Steve Austin for using it to gain an advantage! I don't think the fight has finished. Steamboat and Douglas and The Hollywood Blondes have begun brawling again! They wind up brawling all the way down the aisle and out of view.

My Opinion: Almost got a **** match, but was lacking in certain areas, so i'm knocking off a quarter of a star. Yes, there is such a thing as a quarter star. ***3/4. 88

Could you explain what Bobby Eaton's "Alabama Slam" is? Since his "Alabama Jam" was easily one of the most over finishes of the early 90's.

Also, booking The Vanilla Midgets against a REALLY SHITTY WORKER (circa '93) in Page and Nash (who dwarfs them) might not be the best idea.

No Misawa references from me, I swear. Oh, Bloody Hell! Tag to Marcus Alexander Bagwell. Marcus Alexander Bagwell floors Lance Storm...and climbs the turnbuckles. Flying Crossbody!!! 1....2....3!! It's all over. The Thrillseekers don't look like they're finished by any means...and they rush forward to attack Bagwell and Scorpio, and send them to the outside. Threats are exchanged as the chaos ends.

My Opinion: A badly blown spot prevents me from giving out more snowflakes. ***3/4

Pin, but Benoit is out just before the three count. Vegas tags out to Diamond Dallas Page. The Vegas Connection whip Benoit into the ropes and hit a double back elbow. Covers for a quick two count. My Opinion: I'll give this a ***1\4 rating. If I left it up to you, you'd probably think it was the greatest match ever! Keep trying...

4. The Great Muta vs Rick Rude.

Match Background: This match is for the WCW US title. The Great Muta has been WCW US champion since 24 January 1993.

The Match: Standing leg lariat by The Great Muta on Rick Rude. Rick Rude counters an arm wringer with an elbow to the side of the head. The Great Muta just WALKS into a stiff lariat clothesline from Rick Rude. The ref is bumped, as goes down after accidentally getting caught by an elbow to the face. Rick Rude blocks the suplex attempt and is able to hit the suplex instead! Muta walks into a side slam. Think about how much talent it takes to side slam someone. Nash can do it. Cover, ONE...TWO...NO! I honestly thought that match was going to end right then and there. Muta reverses a Rick Rude hammerlock. The two competitors end up fighting to the outside of the ring. The referee tells them to bring it back in, but neither of them are listening. The ref tries again, and again they keep brawling. The referee completes a ten count, ending the match in a double count out! The fight has started up again! The Great Muta attacks Rick Rude, and they brawl all around ringside, then into the crowd! They eventually disappear backstage, still fighting.

My Opinion: Consider yourself lucky, a ****1\4 is hard to get and it was earned every step of the way. Let's see if you can do better now.

Brian Pillman rolls up the stunned Jushin Thunder Liger, and even puts his feet on the second rope to add insult to injury! 1....2...3! What a display of cheating from Brian Pillman. Liger/Sasaki look like they aren't done...and they attack The Hollywood Blondes! After an exchange of blows, Pillman and Austin are laid out in the ring.

My Opinion: I'd love to see a rematch and see if they can top this. ****

Brian Lee comes running down the aisle with a chair, and gets into the ring! Prime Time hits Zenk with a chair to the back! Tom Zenk goes down to the canvas, hurt.

My Opinion: I'll give a 1\2* rating because they were actually able to hit a couple of spots.

8. Ricky Steamboat vs Big Van Vader.

The ref gets into position, administers the three count, and it's over. Big Van Vader pins Steamboat. Big Van Vader smiles and walks over and shakes hands with Faarooq, thanking him for interfering and helping win this match.

My Opinion: I really shouldn't drink when I'm reviewing matches. Especially with Scotsman, I can't drink nearly as much, so I try too hard. It was either ** or ****, but I guess I'll have to compromise and say ***.

Guest Bobby Cox is God

ok heres my problem with this kinda stuff.

wrestling is scripted... thus the outcome is known

meaning... using a simulator to determine the probablity of a match based on a wrestlers skills is kinda fucking retarded.

heres some advice. go next door, ask the cute girl with the short shorts to go to the ice cream shack with you and then maybe you'll get lucky and she will let you see her breast or better yet maybe youll actually get laid.

stop sitting in dark corners in rooms with no lights. that bright thing in the sky when you walk out your house is just the sun. no need to be affraid.
