Classic Royal Rumble Review

The decision for the title vs. title came in mid-late February IIRC. The match was announced after the 1/90 SNME I think, but no title was decided for defense yet.

Oh... I went with the wrong question. I thought you meant for the Warrior/Hogan angle. My bad... Yeah, 1993 was the first year. 1991 was a coincidence if anyone tries arguing with it.

1993 was the first time the title shot was on the line. (The new ruling clearly made Yoko the clear victor since no other heel was being pushed @ the time like him)

It's stuck ever since.

I don't think it was clear at all. I don't even know if he was being pushed as strong as Hassan is today. The only guy of note he beat was Virgil.

I think it came as a shock to many, especially since many were predicting Savage vs. Bret at Mania.

A match that would have probably made WrestleMania IX less panned than it is right now.

The question is though: Would they still have done the Hogan ending?

Nah, he would have had to be content with his tag team title match. And they could have always had some heels attack Bret and Savage after a great match, and Hogan run down to make the save or something like that too.

Was Bret/Yoko the -plan all along, then? and If it was Bret/Savage then it was scrapped, why?

Does that also explain why Savage and Yoko were the final 2?

Edit: Those aren't specifically directed at Cawthon, anyone can answer if they know.

Yokozuna v. Bret has always been the plan. Hogan winning the title in an impromptu match wasn't. I have no idea how long that was planned for, but it wasn't a "sudden urge".

How sad is it that I can remember the entrance order for any Rumble from 1997 and up?

Final Five: Bret Hart, Steve Austin, Fake Diesel, Vader, and Undertaker

As referees try to separate a brawl between Mankind and Terry Funk, both of which are eliminated, Bret Hart launches a surprised Austin, who was in there over 50 minutes, over the top and to the floor. Austin realizes that the referees never saw him, so he sneaks in and tosses both Vader and Undertaker out as they fight near the ropes. Meanwhile, Bret throws Diesel over, not aware that Austin snuck back in. Immediately after eliminating Diesel, Bret is thrown out by Austin, who the referees quickly declare the winner. Bret gets in the referees' and Vince McMahon's face as Austin is quick to get out.

Highlights

- Up until about # 6, there being no timer due to technical difficulties

- Fake Razor being tossed in mere seconds

- Ahmed Johnson being an idiot and jumping to over the top and eliminating himself after seeing Faarooq in the aisle.

- Austin eliminating Phineas, Bart Gunn, and Jake Roberts in succession

- Owen Hart eliminating his bizarre tag team champion partner, Bulldog

- Mil Mascaras being an idiot by diving off the top rope outside onto Cybernetico & Pierroth immediately after eliminating them

- Austin simultaneously throwing Mero and Owen Hart over

- Austin and Bret Hart's mini-match

- Jerry Lawler entering from the commentary table and being hit out in seconds

- Mankind and Terry Funk fighting

- Austin sneaking back in to eliminate Vader, Undertaker, and Bret in a row to "win" the Rumble

- Bret Hart going insane after being tossed by Austin

- Steve Austin lasting from # 5 and winning

Steve Austin IS the 1997 Royal Rumble. On a "Rumble Scale", this is about 5/10.

Is this the one where Austin cleared the ring and did pushups?

So Scott Steiner stole his gimmick from Austins 1 time appearence of doing push-ups mid-match?

And then, trumping Flair's reaction to Piper 5 years earlier, Bret's music hits and Austin loses his mind.

Best Rumble spot ever :D
