TV Games: Mortal Kombat

Recommended Posts

The IGN review

From the vids and pics it looks lame. Genesis level graphics, messed up sound, gameplay that's way too fast and a bunch of minor details they got wrong(like the font and lifebars). Why bother making this if it isn't going to be arcade perfect? There's plenty of ports of this game for every system. Supposedly the controller is based on the arcade cabinet, but I'm not really seeing that at all. I will still buy this though.

...well, I guess since Midway has yet to release it on one of thier Arcade Treasures disks, it makes sense for someone to release it like this.

...of course, what do I know? The only Mortal Kombat I version I played was the Sega CD version.

I was thinking the same thing.

Personally, it makes no sense to me to buy these things (espescially the EA Sports 95 thing..).

If you still have your old consoles, you could probably buy the games for $2 or so instead of paying $20 for a neat controller box that plugs into your TV...

If they don't include MK1 with Deception, I guess they figure this is the only way to bilk Gamecube ow--er, I mean allow them the opportunity to play this classic again.

For those with a PS2, it's not hard to find the Deception bonus disc with MK1 on it used, though.

Alright...if TV plug and play games can't get Ms. Pac Man right, then I have no hope for MK. And I don't care WHAT IGN says about it, normally I trust their opinion, but they marked out for the TV Plug & Play Ms. Pac Man and dammit, I'm still pissed about it.

What was wrong with it?

I thought the whole reason MK1 was removed from the Arcade Treasures 2 disc was to include it with MK Deception Super Duper Deluxe Edition.

Then again, MK2 and 3 on that set are nothing more than poorly translated MAME roms I don't have much hope for MK1 being any different.

If it looks lame, why buy it? Don't you already have copies of MK across several platforms? Maybe I missed something, but I don't see the point in spending money on an inferior version of a game that you already own.

Supposedly they're fixing those problems.

Jakks is also revisiting the Ms. Pac-Man controller I reamed before (unfairly, I should add). In this case, they've added wireless capabilities to it -- the controller comes with a base molded to resemble the original Ms. Pac-Man arcade unit. The base plugs into the TV and the controller can be lifted out and used remotely... kinda nice. It also features an 8-way joystick, so they've included a revised version of Bosconian that allows for 8-way control. Cleverly, the controller becomes constricted to 4-way control when Ms. Pac-Man is selected, so the control isn't compromised. Whoever makes these things knows their stuff -- both the game mechanics and how to sucker in rose-tinted nostalgianauts.

I'm not sure how much that helps since you have the old one, though.

Nah, she can't be Karenna Gore Schiff.
