Steamboat was going to have a baby and wanted more and more time off, and they had justed given him the belt, so in essence, they pissed him off, he pissed them off, so they handed the belt over to their resident Elvis impersonator, who went on to become the longest-reigning IC champ of all time. You really can't choose sides in that one.

Why didn't they have ever have Hogan-Flair feud during Flair's first time in the WWE?

i've read that's what they wanted for WrestleMania VIII but when Hogan announced his leaving after that PPV it changed the plans because:

a) Flair was the champ

b) Hogan didn't want to lose his retirement match

c) Vince didn't want Hogan to retire as WWF Champion (understandable, this was before the monthly PPV era, and unless they did it on house shows or regular TV tapings it wouldve left the WWF without a champion until SummerSlam in August)

Hogan had to duck out for a while because this was squarely in the middle of the steroid trial time. He wasn't retiring at all. Notice how most, if not all, of the champions around this time were not the hoss-like (read: "roided up") guys who were the champs before (like Hogan).

Warrior came back, but other than him, no one else in main events was like that (Savage seemed to have slimmed WAY down by 1992).

Depends on what he was wearing I guess. Certain color paterns made him bigger, while others didn't. At Wrestlemania VIII, the gold outfit made him look pretty small I think.

Of course, what would have happened if Butch Reed didn't no-show?

Would they have given "The Natural" a long run?

Yes. Vince thought a black man with blonde hair would the next heel sensation, so he'd have given Reed a long IC reign.

Really?

Geez.

I didn't think Reed was pure shit in the ring --- but I sure as hell didn't see dollar signs with him, either.

Then again, I didn't see HTM drawing when he won the belt, either.

Come on, how could Butch Reed NOT draw money?

He was a black guy with BLOND hair who called himself THE NATURAL! That's GOLD, Jerry! Gold!!!

They didn't exactly bomb as the first few shows in California drew very well, but they weren't the instant sellouts that WWF had expected. By the time Wrestlemania rolled around, Flair and Hogan had wrestled all over the country and WWF wanted a fresh matchup at WM. I'm not sure when it was decided that Hogan would take time off due to the steroid controversy, but I believe it was before Hogan/Justice was announced, so I'd bet it had something to do with the decision.
