IMPORTANT FOR XBOX OWNERS

We've just put this up on the company website: http://www.totalgames.net/pma/21464

Basically, if you've got an Xbox from before the stated dates, you really ought to get on to Microsoft about getting your power cable replaced.

Just to state both dates (thought they were both in the article): Xboxes from anywhere in the world EXCEPT mainland Europe are affected if made before 23 October 2003; for mainland Europe, and made before 13 January 2004 are affected.

I'm going to laugh my ass off when all the people who got mad at me for not buying one of those garish monstrosities have their rooms catch on fire.

I like how it took them this long to release a statement about something like this.

We all laughed about this because our Xboxes are all within the safety date.

Then irony struck, as we realised that all of our debug kits are affected and need new cables – especially the one that was making fizzling noises when I took it home the other night.

My X-Box is fine...my father's however is older than the date they issued. At least I know if a fire breaks out in the living room its his fault.

I'm getting the impression that DVD Spree works for Microsoft or something. If this is true I want a free copy of Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas when it is released for the X-Box in June.

I would still rather have a fire hazard Xbox than a PS2. I am not really sure why that is though.

hmph.

Because PS2's are even worse with defective issues? Not to mention ridiculously slower as well.

Nope, just a games journo, I'm afraid. GTA I can't do, but we did score a load of free Midnight Club stuff when RockStar came over last week. I swear at least one person on every magazine has been wearing a Midnight Club t-shirt or hoodie ever since - we're such whores for freebies.

Any leftovers of free stuff you guys get feel free to send me some. I only have one hoodie so I'd take one of those...or a T-shirt...or a game.

Random free shit I brought home from my desk today:

free_shit.jpg

* Midnight Club 3: DUB Edition hoodie

* Midnight Club 3: DUB Edition windshield sun visor thing

* Sealed retail copy of RoboTech Invasion

* Logic 3 infra red controller

* Amon Tobin Splinter Cell Chaos Theory soundtrack CD

There was also a free copy of Knights Of The Old Republic II in at the beginning of the week, but I'm dick at that so I had no interest. I've also got an invite to the UK Star Wars: Republic Commando launch party at a club in London - lots of "celebs" and name DJs doing the set. Could be cool but, y'know, it's frigging London. I really don't know if I can be arsed to make the trip all the way there just to get drunk and play Republic Commando again. But hey, at least they asked!

If you live in England then I don't think your free videogames would work on my system. I'm still willing to pimp a XXL shirt that you may find though.

A plug can be replaced either, you could go buy one for 5 bucks. But when your small PS2 over heats cause it has no fan, you'll be crying as the people start laughing at you again.

I await the intense debate from geeks that say they'd much rather have their lives taken by the Glorious Earth God PS2 than by shitty ol' X-Box and vice versa.

My X-Box is older than the date given. If the Box takes me, I expect all of you to avenge my death with a rage the world has never seen before.

Well, 98% of the code that we get only works on the debug units, so theydefinitely wouldn't work… unless you've got a chipped Xbox in which case you can run anything.

But it's academic, because we can't give away or sell any of the stuff we blag. With some of the stuff we've got we could make a small fortune on eBay – but the developers and publishers wouldn't be too thrilled at all of their stuff appearing on the market and thus we would get no more. And we rely on these people to keep us in t-shirts!

So, you're just like most of the "pros" then?

I resent your disparaging remarks about my profession… but yes, yes I am.

I saw this on Joystiq and I thought it was an interesting rumor..

”There have been numerous reports of “loose power connectors” in xboxes, and the cause of this is that the solder joints on the PSU have actually broken where the connector mounts to the board, which can result in the xbox not powering on, or possibly even sparks, smoke, and fire.

So, instead of taking the costly duty of recalling all older xboxes, what do they do? They give you a power cord with this huge GFI thing. This in no way will solve the problem, it is merely a bandaid. So, when your PSU sparks and shorts out, it just trips a switch instead of catching fire, but your xbox still doesn’t work.”

Why, how nice of Microsoft. At least your house wont catch on fire, but your out of Warranty X Box will still be dead.

The solution is simple. When you're not playing your Xbox, TURN IT OFF and it won't happen.

Not that difficult.

So the XBOX isnt bulletproof after all.

Everything has an achille's heel....

Actually, I saw this on a show called "X-Play" on G4...

They did a test on the most durable sytems. Three rounds: first, drop a weight on it. Second...hit it with a hammer. Third...drop it from about 10 feet onto the concrete floor.

PS2 didn't last beyond the first round.

X-Box failed the last round.

Gamecube still worked after all that.

THere was also that video posted on smartmarks? awhile back that had a bunch of young ones trying to destroy a gamecube. Tying it up and letting it drag behind a truck, putting it on fire and so forth.

Those Gamecubes are tough.

Yeah, X-PLAY is awesome. If only for the droolworthy Morgan Webb. When she does that German accent.....

Ummm, anyway. Yes, the PS2 is a very weak system. Course why you would be bunching your video game console to begin with is a mystery to me. Wait, I did that with my original NES system....explains why the GameCube is so damn tough.
