The Bret Hart/Scott Hall/Roddy Piper debacle

Recommended Posts

Does anyone know if Bret Hart vs. Scott Hall was the original planned match for SuperBrawl 9? Why did Bret drop the United States Title to Roddy Piper prior to the PPV. Was it the groin injury?

It was all down politicking from Nash et al to bury Hart.

Elaborate please.

I remember hoping that it'd be Bret vs Benoit at the PPV since Benoit was promised a title around this time.

Eric was wanting to build towards Hart v Hogan later in the year, around HHavoc. Part of this was because he wanted to justify Hart's salary. Nash felt Hart was being paid too much, and wasn't over enough to warrant the match being built to. At the booking meeting before the Nitro in question, they were meant to begin building towards Hart v Hogan, and Page suggested that Bret put over Booker T, which Hart was against, feeling that it wasn't the right time to do that if they were going to build to Hart v Hogan. Nash complained to Eric that Hart wasn't cooperating, and it ended up with Hart dropping the US Title to Piper for no reason, other than the obvious.

And Bret still ended up putting over Booker T a few weeks later anyway, in a hell of a match that I think was given **** in the Observer at the time.

The entire angle was also one of many attempts to bury Chris Benoit. He did a job in the double elimination tag tournament going on at the time, then came back later in the evening and was given a US title shot by his buddy Ric Flair, only to lose it fairly cleanly in a match with Scott Hall. Hall buried Benoit on the mic and in the ring as well later that night. Nash did a run in and Benoit fought him off, and Nash didn't even sell it.

It was a depressing time to watch wrestling. HTQ, if I'm not mistaken, didn't they have a meeting around this time and decide to bury Flair, Bret, Jericho, Benoit, Malenko, Raven, Kanyon and Saturn?

(reads topic)

Gotta love that Kevin Nash. A dickhead who couldn't draw or have a good match with anyone (outside of 2 people) who felt he was above everyone else.

And a bunch of others as well, yeah.

Was that the same meeting where Eric Bischoff had said that the only guys who can draw or are credible main eventers (or something along those lines) were Hogan, Piper and Savage (while Ric Flair was RIGHT THERE in the meeting room)? Or was that a different meeting?

Different meeting. That happened in the same meeting where he offered anyone a full release if they wanted it. Then backed down when Raven took him up on the offer, and only offered him a partial release.

What he had said was that Hogan, Piper and Savage were the only ones around who "put asses on seats."

I was only on the net once every week or two back than. I remember Bret also talking about wanting to make his job to Booker T mean something so that's why it was done over a period of 3 matches or something.

Now I got the tag and the Benoit vs Hall match on tape from that Nitro so I can go back and look at something if need be. I'm curious on how you percieve Hall burying Benoit in the ring that night. Thanks for any response.

Am I dreaming that that was some sort of #1 contender match? Perhaps for Uncensored.

For whatever reason I remember it as being such. But then Hall was injured and the title was held up. Booker ended up beating Steiner at Uncensored for the TV belt instead.

I like 87.5% if those guys...

And don't forget Nash's loss to their new "Giant Killer," one Rey Mysterio, Jr. to make himself look like he put people over and that he was a nice guy.
