Guest bigm350 Posted February 24, 2005 Report Posted February 24, 2005 He is a legendary name in puroresu but I was wondering where he stands as a worker worldwide. At his peak was he as good as Race, Jack Brisco, Flair,Kawada, Misawa, Liger, etc? Does he trump all the legendary wrestlers from North America and Mexico? Or was he overrated?
Guest Loss Posted February 24, 2005 Report Posted February 24, 2005 Absolutely not overrated. Probably not only held his own against those names, but outworked them. Amazingly, he was having nearly perfect matches as early as 1976 and as late as 1992.
Special K Posted February 24, 2005 Report Posted February 24, 2005 I've only seen his late 90's stuff, but it's superb.
Guest Loss Posted February 24, 2005 Report Posted February 24, 2005 I've only seen his late 90's stuff, but it's superb. Do you mean early 90s? When he was teaming with Taue and others against Misawa, Kawada, Kobashi and Kikuchi? He retired in 1992.
Special K Posted February 24, 2005 Report Posted February 24, 2005 Gah, yes I mean early 90's, specifcally against Misawa. He was working matches past '92, but as a shadow of his former self.
Jingus Posted February 25, 2005 Report Posted February 25, 2005 Unfortunately, I've never gotten around to buying much old Jumbo stuff. But what I have (mostly tag matches against people like the Funks or Brody/Hansen) does support the people who list him as one of the best of all time. Damn, but sometimes it seems like that guy could do anything, possessing amazing grace and speed despite his size, which for a Japanese man was proportionately equivalent to being the Undertaker.
