4hartthreat 0 Report post Posted March 3, 2005 Maggie definately did not win the fight, her mom was not mistaken. At one point in the hospital, Swank asks Clint what her nickname meant and he tells her that he doesn't have to tell her because she didn't win the fight. Then she says he's the meanest man she's ever known. I just assumed that because the cheap shot occured behind the ref's back that he couldn't call it and that's why there was no dq, but I don't know. But I also found myself wanting to know what happened to the Blue Bear, but I accepted not knowing because the movie wasn't about her and it's not like knowing the fate of the Bear would have made Maggie any less crippled. MDH257 0 Report post Posted March 3, 2005 This is from Roger Ebert's Movie Answer Man Column: Q. Left completely unresolved in "Million Dollar Baby" was what happened to Maggie's opponent after delivering the illegal sucker punch. It is vaguely suggested that the opponent was allowed to retain the contested title. This is ludicrous. After such conduct, no legitimate sanctioning body would simply award a championship to the offending fighter. And even though the conduct occurred in a boxing ring, there would probably be some public outcry for criminal charges. I'm not objecting to the presentation of Maggie's story, but I feel there should have been some resolution to the boxing-related issues. Alan C. Douglas, Chicago A. Tom Rosenberg of Chicago's Lakeshore Entertainment, one of the film's producers, replies: "The referee did not see the late punches in either bout. Often fighters are hit after the bell without disqualification. This ties into Frankie's constant advice to Maggie: 'Protect yourself at all times.' Maggie did not win the fight but her mother is incorrect, highlighting her meanness, when she tells aggie 'you lost'." I'm assuming that means the fight was ruled a no contest. Edwin MacPhisto 0 Report post Posted March 10, 2005 Just saw this tonight, finally. Fantastic movie. Anyone complaining about sports details is missing the point, I think. I've seen this and Sideways in the past 5 days, and I'm really glad to have done so. gtd's comments on lighting are particularly sound. Complex use of a simple thing like shadow does it for me. As for all the business with the paralysis and its aftermath: it should be pretty clear that all the nuts harping on this film as a bold endorsement of assisted suicide really, really missed the point. Moreso than the people complaining about sports details, even.
NoCalMike 0 Report post Posted March 10, 2005 The problem with the fight scene wasn't just "the punch after the bell" The Blue Bear chick must have thrown at least 4 illegal punches/elbows/low blows etc.....all throughout the fight, and it is so unrealistic to say the ref missed ALL OF IT. With that said, it was still a good film.

But he didn't miss all of it, I'm pretty sure after her second cheap shot he gave her a point deduction.
