Ong Bak

Recommended Posts

I just saw the Muay Thai film Ong Bak with Tony Jaa.

Man, what a kick ass movie! The film has about ten minutes of campy storyline building where the hero has to retrieve the head of a golden statue from an evil old wheelchair bound man who has a voicebox ala Stephen Hawking and smokes cigarettes through a hole in his throat.

The rest of the 107 minutes is dedicated to Tony Jaa beating people up and doing crazy stunts. The big draw for the film is that no wires, CGI or stuntmen were used in place of Tony.

***spoiler warning***

Amongst other things, he can do the Super Mario head stomp where he leaps off the ground and jumps on 4 dudes heads in a row and then sommersaults on to the ground. He also does the splits and slides under a moving truck and has his legs set on fire and does flaming roundhouse kicks :headbang:

A truely awesome film. The bad acting and silly plot don't detract from the film much and the action scenes are mostly excellent if a little repetetive towards the end.

Highly recommended.

Anyone else seen this yet?

It's worth the price of admission for sure. Good martial arts flick that olamost takes it to the point of self-parody. (barb-wire hoop?) Good times. He mixes in realistic kickboxing strikes with overration gymnastics. The dirty fighter was the coolest charcter in the movie, though.

I saw this movie a few weeks ago and thought it was wicked. The story line was weak but nobody saw the movie for the story. The opening scene with the fighting on the trees was interesting. The fight scenes overall were amazing, so many knees to the head

I didnt think I'd like a film like that anymore since so many films of the same mold were major disappointments throughout the late 90's. When i saw it last year i was recommending it to everyone i knew. It's just something they don't make often and when they do it usually ends up being short on every end. This movie however did plenty things right and it also made me wanna use my knees more in fights.
