Guest caboose Report post Posted June 14, 2002 Poland just made it three, and s.korea are winning 1-0. Come on Portugal, send those yanks out the tournament. IT'S FOOTBALL, NOT SOCCER!
Guest franchise632 Report post Posted June 14, 2002 THANK GOD FOR SOUTH KOREA!!!!!!!!! We played our worst football game of the pool play and we get to back in on the strength of the Koreans and the 2 red cards to Portugal. The only good thing that came from the US team was the strong play of Brad Freidel, he stopped another penalty kick tonight, his second of the tourney. Now we get to play Mexico on Monday. That is actually kinda cool to have a Mex/US game, should do better ratings that way. Thanks again S. Korea!
Guest Report post Posted June 14, 2002 Turns out my theory was totally irrelevant. So, what do you think: Was it Poland being a sleeping giant suddenly waking up cranky in their final game? Was the U.S. guilty of being foolishly overconfident? Or was it just that Agoos had a crappy start and got beat by his man twice and nobody could cover for him? Whatever it was, The U.S.A. bombed out in this last match, and are damn lucky that Portugal played like their neighbor Spain usually plays (i.e. way below expectations, going 3 and out when most experts pick them to go far) in the world cup and that Korea beat them. Do you believe in second chances at life?
Guest Report post Posted June 15, 2002 Soccer Newbie here! If I completely misinterpreted this...excuse my ignorance Can somebody tell me why in the final minutes of Mexico vs. Italy...Mexico were just passing the ball around and laughing on the sidelines. Meanwhile, the British announcer was saying stuff like "this is making me sick" and "this is a disgrace to our great sport"??? I guess Mexico were just being jerks knowing that with the tie they cliched their spot in the second round (and Italy COULD'VE been eliminated) or what? Well actually, after hearing the result of the Ecuador-Crotia game, bith teams had realised they had qualified and so, Mexico just passed the ball around as there was no point in either team risking injury in tackles. Guest The Vanilla Midget Report post Posted June 15, 2002 germany 1: paraguay 0 (oliver neuville, 88) just caught the end of the game, but from what the commentators said, was a bloody boring game which paraguay spoiled with a terrible attitude. so now germany into the quarters to play the winner of mexico/usa (a match the germans should win)
Guest redbaron51 Report post Posted June 15, 2002 Well if USA moved on (fat chance that is going to happen) they'll get creamed. If Mexico moves on Germany will win, unless Mexico got lucky like against Italy
Guest Renegade Report post Posted June 15, 2002 twenty-ish min into England vs Polland, England leading 2-
Guest caboose Report post Posted June 15, 2002 England 3 Denmark 0 WOOOOOOOOOOOO~! But now it's Brazil or Belgium. I hope its Brazil, that will be a hell of a game. Come On Spain! Beat the Irish!
Guest starvenger Report post Posted June 15, 2002 >Well if USA moved on (fat chance that is going to happen) they'll get creamed. >If Mexico moves on Germany will win, unless Mexico got lucky like against Italy I gotta agree with you here, but stranger things have happened so far in this tournament, so maybe there's another upset in the making. Guest muzanisa Report post Posted June 15, 2002 Another good English performance. Provided they don't get tonked by Brazil this tournament will probably be regarded as a success, leading to more misplaced belief that England are a great footballing nation. If they beat Brazil though I can see them winning it and they'd probably be expected to. C'mon the men in Green!
Guest Anorak Report post Posted June 15, 2002 EN-GER-LANNDDD!!!!!!! YEAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! What a great result! I couldn't believe we won so convincingly, Denmark never really looked like scoring and we were pretty comfortable really. Bring on Brazil!! Should be a cracking quarter final, I don't think Marc Wilmots can beat Brazil on his own so Brazil vs England has got to happen. I went down the pub to watch the game and the atmosphere was brilliant, Robbie Savage and Darren Eadie even decided to grace us with their presence! The old Leicester chant of 'Bruno' went up when Heskey made it 3-0 and everyone went mad. I really expected a tight game so it was great to win so easily. Poland certainly messed up my prediction yesterday but the Americans still went through anyway thanks to South Korea. The spirit and physical effort of the Korean's is amazing, they just never stop running and tackling at 100mph for the full ninety minutes. The Jao Pinto tackle was terrible and cost Portugal dear, I was actually glad the American's went through at their expense. Germany were lucky as normal, it was a terrible game and with either America or Mexico awaiting them in the quarters they will fancy their chances, I can't believe such a mediocre German team could potentially get so far. Good luck to the Irish tomorrow against Spain, I think they will need it but its not an impossible task. They need an inspired defensive performance and a big contribution from Duff or Keane to get through.
Guest The Vanilla Midget Report post Posted June 16, 2002 ENG-ER-LAND indeed!!!!! england played bloody well, but they were helped by the incompetence of the danish goalie. that gave them a lot of confidence and totally freed up the game. brazil will get through belgium, but the england-brazil match will be a cracker. england have conceded only 1 goal all tournament, and while brazil have been very strong on attack, their defence has been questionable at best. whoever wins that game has a great chance to go all the way. i actually think the usa might get up over mexico, though they will be absolutely creamed by germany in the quarters. also i expect the spain-ireland game to be an absolute corker, but spain should come out on top. Guest caboose Report post Posted June 16, 2002 SPAIN YEAH BAYBEE~! WOOOOOOOOOOOOO~! Shit that was tense, i could barely watch. The standard of penalties was appalling, but we made it through. It's gonna be Japan or Turkey for Spain now. Should be easier than this game against the Irish. But Japan are hosts and Inamoto looks good, and the Turks are always hard to beat. For now though Spain are through.
Guest redbaron51 Report post Posted June 16, 2002 Denmark had their chances yesterday but couldn't capitalize it. If they scored once or twice it would have been a different game. SENEGAL GOES ON!!!!
Guest muzanisa Report post Posted June 16, 2002 Bugger bum bollocks Spain or Brazil please let it be Brazil on Friday. thank god Finnan scored the Pen. It's all about Robbie Keane from now on. World class striker with a penchant for clutch last minute goals. Bummer that Ireland's out, but a worthy cup performance overall. Nothing to hang their heads about at all. Could've beaten Spain, too, just didn't get the ball to bounce their way at a couple key points. Roy Keane = Steve Austin? Guest The Vanilla Midget Report post Posted June 17, 2002 hehe: memo to denamrk- you're going home with the argies!!! spain looked pretty shaky, and their coach made a really poor move subbing off both raul and morientes so early. ireland nearly made them pay dearly. tonights games: mexico/usa brazil/belgium usa to beat mexico in regular time, and brazil to shit all over belgium. Guest Report post Posted June 17, 2002 another hour to go bfore the u.s/mexico game, anyone think the us can pull it off considering the the bad plays they have made in the past few games? --Rob
Guest franchise632 Report post Posted June 17, 2002 Well its in the 42nd minute and USA is up 1 - 0 and they are play well, although Mexico is dominating the possesion of the ball. Brad Friedel is playing well again. Hopefully they can stay strong through the second half.
Guest franchise632 Report post Posted June 17, 2002 Well all be damned it looks like we are gonna do it. Another great goal in the 65th minute. There was a John O'Brien handball in the penalty box that was missed by the ref. Bad call, but whos to say they would have scored a PK goal. Mexico certainly was attacking the whole game. I think they did a very smart thing in letting Mexico run all over and try and attack and USA just waited for a clear opportunity and made the most. Cobi Jones play excellent late in the game on a sub, drawing several yellow card from the Mexican players. Who towards the end started playin pretty dirty. Same what you will about USA backing into the elimination rounds, but no teams lucks it way to quarterfinals. They played tremendous. First USA World Cup shut out since 1950. Hopefully there is more to come, but no matter what this is a tremendous World Cup, and they have gone further then anyone expected. Here's to Fridays game against Germany!!!! Guest Report post Posted June 17, 2002 I'm torn. I was rooting for Germany going into the tournament because I didn't expect the US to do this well. Whoever wins, my favorite team goes on to play Italy or South Korea(because Spain... come on! It's Spain!). Yes, I Germany and the US are my favorites. DEUTSCHLAND UBER ALLES! LAND OF THE FREE AND HOME OF THE BRAVE!
Guest caboose Report post Posted June 17, 2002 Yeah my bad, Spain are getting Italy or S.Korea and not Turkey or Japan. I can't believe the US took out Mexico. It was just weird, I mean Mexico looked so good in the group stage, especially against Italy. Oh well, it has been the most upset World Cup ever, so we might as well continue with the shock wins. Guest Anorak Report post Posted June 17, 2002 Looks like there's a good chance of this world cup producing the most unlikely semi finalists since Bulgaria in 94. I'm supporting Belgium against Brazil and S. Korea against Italy, I would love to see more shocks, i'm kind of hoping none of the remaining games are too one sided as i'm getting too used to dramatic games this world cup. Guest redbaron51 Report post Posted June 17, 2002 I'm hoping that Germany defeats the states, because I don't have to the American ego sky rocket until it all ready is.
Guest Report post Posted June 17, 2002 wow that was an awesome game, well worth staying up all night to watch. I can't wait for the germany game. Cobi Jones is my hero fo taking that lui kang kick and then the headbutt at the same time. --Rob
Guest caboose Report post Posted June 17, 2002 Belgium 0 Brazil 2 And with that... OH MY GOD IT'S ENGLAND VS. BRAZIL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Like Run DMC once said, CAN'T HARDLY WAIT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Guest Report post Posted June 17, 2002 I hope renaldo scored like 5 goals against those brits. I am not a fan of the english national team. --Rob
Guest caboose Report post Posted June 17, 2002 If Brazil can put 5 past England, then they deserve to win the World Cup... ...But they won't. England WILL beat Brazil. Either 1-0 with Michael Owen scoring OR 2-1 with Owen and Beckham for England, and Ronaldo for Brazil. Being English I'll of course be wearing my heart on my sleeve, and it will induce more stress than perhaps even the game against Argentina, or the stress that the Spanish part of me felt when Mendieta stepped up for that penalty yeaterday.
