Steamboat added to HOF Class?

Recommended Posts

from PWI:

I attended last night's house show at the Crown Arena in Fayetteville last night. The big news of the evening is that during an angle with The Coach, Ricky Steamboat was announced as the newest member of the WWE Hall Of Fame. Of course, this led to Coachman running down Steamboat and the Dragon laying him out! Also, I heard people saying that Matt Hardy was outside meeting with fans before the show, but I didn't see him if he was.

I'm happy to see The Dragon potentially getting a spot on the HOF but in a way i kind of dont want him to go in with this class.

Hogan, Piper, Shiek, J. Hart, Orndorff, Volkoff, and Orton dont scream WRESTLING to me but more entertainment. which fits the Hollywood scheme they have this year.

I'd rather he go in next year in Chicago with Dibiase, Bret and other "wrestlers" in a wrestling hotbed city.

Yeah whatever...you need to go back and watch some tapes of Piper, Orndorff, Orton & Iron Sheik in their primes, did they do flips in the air or go through tables....NO... but they could WRESTLE, especially Bob Orton. Plus they knew how to work the crowd, which is a concept alot of today's "wrestlers" hasn't grasped yet.

What Coach likely said is that Steamboat was a legendary name. He did the same with Moolah and Mae Young here today before Randy Orton laid him out.

I don't think Steamboat is in the class now --- but I do suspect he will be within a year or so.

I never said they couldn't wrestle you nitwit. They were characterized performers and entertainers. Something Ricky Steamboat was never classified as. Of course They worked some good stuff in their careers but their IDENTITY weren't as world class wrestlers but larger then life characters. While steamboat is the opposite.

Bob Orton is largely known for his character, same with The Iron Shiek, Volkoff Hogan and Orndorff.

I was merely saying Steamboat doesn't fit in with that character mold and would be a better fit for a "wrestling" group of inductees like Hart, Dibiase, Anderson etc. etc.

I'm not so sure Steamboat didn't have a "character" in the WWF, it seemed like they tried to give him a Bruce Lee karate gimmick in 85/86, not to mention his horrible "Dragon" gimmick in 1991. He just didn't do alot of over the top promos and skits, except maybe the one where he fought ninjas in his "training" skit.

But yes Steamboat is Hall of Fame bound....soon I hope.

Umm, what was Bob Orton's character? I thought he was known best as being a decent in-ring worker with a bizarrely slowly-healing arm injury. :)

I was unaware Bob Orton was Pipers lap dog for the the entire 70's decade and the early part of the 80's.

They really need to save some names for next year...but..then again is this going to be an every year thing now? Cause eventually they'll be scraping the bottom of the legend barrel until some current people reture (Flair/HBK)

you clearly missed that i was refercing that wwf run.

jesus fucking christ, i never said he couldn't wrestle but he wasnt the caliber of Steamboat and he's most known for basically being piper's bitch and the arm thing which was a classic performing entertainer's gimmick.

You people act like insulted his "legancy" when in fact wwe showing him as just that the mid 80's mid card heel that he was at the time.

the story probably isn't true because the WWE thought inducting Hogan was the Bombshell and as usual would want him to be the last named, if Steamboat was inducted he would be before Hogan

All the same, the Savage ring bell to the throat still stands (to me) as one of the best oversells of all time.

Flair should retire, and then he and Steamboat could be inducted into the same class...
