Jobber of the Week 0 Report post Posted March 31, 2005 http://www.eonline.com/News/Items/0,1,16242,00.html?tnews Suge Suited Up for $107 Mil by David Jenison Mar 30, 2005, 5:45 PM PT Suge Knight better hope he’s got more Tupac songs in his vault because he’s about to empty his pockets by a whopping $107 million. As the founder of the successful Death Row Records and Tha Row Inc., Marion "Suge" Knight helped introduce such rap stars as Snoop Dogg, Dr. Dre and Tupac Shakur, but apparently he had some unheralded--and unrewarded--help. Lydia Harris claims that she became an equal partner in Death Row in 1989 but that Knight pushed her out once the company took off. At least for now, the courts agree. According to the L.A. Times, Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Ronald Sohigian ordered the rap mogul to pay Harris a total judgment of $107 million. The amount was broken down as $45 million in economic, $2 in non-economic, and $60 million in punitive damages. The lawsuit claimed that Knight signed an agreement with Harris' husband, Michael, before the company's success. Michael was actually incarcerated in Los Angeles at the time for attempted-murder and drug-trafficking convictions, but the couple's investment--$1.5 million for half the company, according to earlier reports--helped it get off the ground. The company later aligned with Interscope Records for distribution and marketing. Interestingly, Michael Harris reportedly signed a $300,000 settlement deal for the label, but the suit claims that the couple was forced into it. Lydia Harris, who allegedly had the title of Vice President at the company's launch, filed the civil suit back in 2002. After years of legal battles, she finally won the enormous settlement earlier this month. According to his lawyers, Knight denies all the allegations. At one point, he apparently even denied having ever met Lydia. Knight, of course, is no stranger to the gavel. In 2003, he was ordered to pay $5.5 million to artist managers who accused him of stealing their artist, rapper Kurupt. Knight has also been in prison three different times in the past eight years. Though Harris was awarded the large settlement, she shouldn't start writing checks just yet. The case never actually went to trial, and Judge Sohigian ruled against Knight because he and his attorneys refused to answer questions or provide documentation to Harris' counsel during the discovery process, according to the Times report. Knight's lawyers will obviously try to get the settlement reversed because if they don't, the mogul's next label might be called Skid Row Records. Hahahah, this is absolutely ridiculous but certainly entertaining since Knight likes to bully people around. Where the hell is he going to find $100,000,000? Guest theanswer1824 Report post Posted April 1, 2005 I hope she gets her due. If it wasn't for her husband, Harry-O (aka Michael Harris), there would have not been a Deathrow records at all. Do a look up on Michael Harris. As far as I know, he was an 80's druglord in nyc and put Denzel Washington on the map with the first black directed broadway play. they do a huge profile regarding this situation in the dvd, welcome to deathrow.
