Who's your Masters

Recommended Posts

I can't decide. I said Els in January, since he came so close in every major last year, he would just snap and win one. He needs to win a major, I feel, to be a credible #1 threat.

But Tiger's playing well. Singh has to win again one of these weeks. And Mickelson's defending and playing the best he ever has.

As for what I hope to see, just Jack being there will make me happy.

The Masters is hands down my favourite sporting event of the year.

Since everyone's picking one of the big four. I'll say Ratief Goosen wins the Masters.

Big Four: Singh, Tiger, Els, Mickelson

Big Five: Singh, Tiger, Els, Mickelson, Goosen.

I'm going to go with a pick that's a little off the beaten path, and say Justin Leonard will take the Masters this year. I know it probably won't happen, but I just like the trend that both Weir and Mickelson ended droughts at the Bob Hope before winning the Masters the last two years, and then Leonard did it this year.

I will say that Tiger Woods is winning at least one major this year though. I'd guess either the US Open or the PGA.

If he wins just one, it'll be the British at St. Andrew's.

Oh, I didn't bother to check the sites. I was thinking in general that Tiger usually has to be more on his game to win at the British, but if they're playing at St. Andrew's, that's a totally different story. He owns that course.

I'm gonna pick Ernie Els, but really, the field is so good now that it's too close to call.

I'd like to see Mike Weir or Stephen Ames get it, though.

Agreed that Jack being there will make it special. I'd like to see Phil win it again I guess--ideally a Phil/Ernie/Tiger playoff (some combo of the two) would rock. I'd also like to see Davis Love III do good here, since lately he's been doing shitty.

Well, I know the round got shortened by rain today, but it's good to see someone still managed to finish:

B. Casper  +34  18*  106

I guess he just outgrew pride a few years ago. It's funny, on the one hand, you've got Nicklaus who's embarrassed to be out there if he's a stroke behind Ernie Els, and then you have this guy out there, hobbling around the course playing worse than me. I think when you get on the wrong side of 100, I think it might be time to admit that the Masters isn't really the place to try to get in 18 holes.

Actually, I got that just from reading the leaderboard, but here's another fun tidbit from the actual story:

1970 Masters champion Billy Casper recorded a 14 on the par-3 16th hole, the highest recorded score in tournament history, in shooting a front-nine 57 (he started on the 10th hole).

That's just funny. I would have loved to be in the gallery for that hole.

You probably would be the only one.
