Anya 0 Report post Posted April 5, 2005 I got the LE version today. So far(like 2 hours in) it's really great. I love all the cinematic stuff. It's my kind of FPS. Feels like you're in a horror movie. And you can't beat classic Doom & Doom II split screen co-op.
Ripper 0 Report post Posted April 6, 2005 So is it better than the PC game. I heard it was. And do you agree with all the praise that its getting (man is it getting alot.)
Anya 0 Report post Posted April 6, 2005 I haven't played the PC version. Well I've only played single player, but so far it's great. I love cinematic games and this is done so well. Ultimate Doom and Doom II are sort of messed up on the LE though. The screens for split screen are tiny even when it's just two players, it's way too fast and sensetive(feels like you're sliding around) and the only sky background is the green mountains from the first episode. Even in hell there's just green mountains. Very strange oversight. It's stil really cool to have them on the disc.
Jobber of the Week 0 Report post Posted April 8, 2005 I'll rent it pretty quick. I have the PC version and hate it, I knew I'd hate it when I bought it but I just had to drool at the pretty graphics. Yes, I spent hundreds of dollars upgrading my system for a game I ultimately didn't like. But I did get Half-Life 2 running at max details so not all is lost. My main complaint with the game is that it tries to be a shitty Resident Evil clone instead of a real Doom game. Doom is, more or less, about an army of monsters running toward you with open claws while you mow them down with big guns. Not about running through dark corners trying to pop the Imp that magically spawns in front of you and behind you while switching around your weapons to use your ammo evenly. Beyond that, while the engine creates some of the greatest atmospheres ever seen in gaming, the map design is horribly outdated. It's bad enough that there's scenes where picking up a powerup activates a script that spawns a bunch of enemies in your face, but there's also moments where you'll enter empty rooms, just to have a wall, that should not be opening up for any reason, open up like a doorway to reveal a tiny little closet-sized room used for no other reason than to hold the monster that ambushes you. Yes, the graphics look like something out of 2007, but the map design is stuck in 1995, complete with little monster closets that open up out of nowhere. How fucking sad. Lastly, there's the whole "goddamn flashlight can't be used in conjunction with a fucking pistol because apparently this fucking MARINE doesn't know how to use both motherfucking hands" issue, but umpteen reviews, blogs, etc have touched on that. I do want to give XBL co-op a try, though. Might get the nerve to go face the beasties that were bothering me in the PC version if I can take them on with somebody else. Hallway ... room shoot bad guy, turn around and shoot bad guy that spawned behind you, proceed to next hallway, etc. Thank god for HL2 to justify my upgrade as well. Anya 0 Report post Posted April 12, 2005 Co-op is really fun. It's quite a bit different than the regular one player game. They cut out all the cinematics and PDA junk to make it more of an old school action FPS. The darkness works really well with two people, since one can shoot while the other uses the flashlight. Matt Young 0 Report post Posted April 13, 2005 I really want to get this game for online co-op. I heard that the versus modes weren't all that spectacular, but being able to team up with a friend on Xbox Live to tackle the campaign mode would be worth the $50 alone if the game was good, which everyone seems to agree that it is. Anya 0 Report post Posted April 13, 2005 Well, Co-op is only like 2 hours and once you've beaten it once you've pretty much seen it all. I don't know if I'd buy it just for co-op. The deathmatch is so barebones. There's only 5 stages.
