POLICE ARREST FIVE STUDENTS AT SOUTHEAST HIGH

Fires and fights cancel school

By DEANN SMITH The Kansas City Star

Friday was a grim day for education at Southeast High School.

Four fires, several fights, the arrest of five students and other pupils enduring the effects of wind-blown pepper spray wracked the school before administrators finally called off classes for the day.

Reaction from Kansas City School Superintendent Bernard Taylor was swift.

Taylor said he planned to send a “cadre of administrative staff” to the school next week to restore order and crack down on disruptive students. He also asked parents and residents for support.

Students and teachers endured three evacuations Friday — one a routine fire drill and two because of fires that were intentionally set. Police and district officials are also investigating an earlier alleged rape at the school, where 800 students are enrolled.

Paramedics treated five students for the ill effects of the pepper spray after a Kansas City police officer unleashed it. Other students reported eye and throat irritation. One bystander left the school early after the pepper spray wafted near where she was standing and triggered an asthma attack.

The pepper spraying occurred after hundreds of students spilled out onto the front lawn of the school at 3500 E. Meyer Blvd. during the first of the two forced evacuations. Fires had been set in wastebaskets on the first and third floors, district spokesman Edwin Birch said.

Two students began fighting, and two police officers, who are stationed at the school in an effort to prevent problems, tried to break them up, but the situation escalated, authorities said.

Christina Butler said she rushed to the high school after her 17-year-old son called and said that he had been sprayed by an officer and that his younger brother had been detained.

“This school is totally ridiculous,” she said.

The 17-year-old said his brother and another student “started boxing” after the students were evacuated onto the front lawn. He said an officer slammed his cousin, who had rushed up to the fight, to the ground. The 17-year-old then rushed up also “because I didn't feel that was right.”

That's when the officer unleashed the pepper spray.

Police Capt. Floyd Mitchell said one of the officers felt threatened by students who surrounded him. Mitchell said the officer, in accordance with department policy, twice warned the students to move back before releasing pepper spray in an effort to regain control of the crowd.

“He then called the cavalry,” Mitchell said.

More than a dozen police vehicles went to the school. Five students — four males and a female — were arrested for assault or disorderly conduct. The female was arrested after she tossed a frozen drink onto an officer, police said.

Sophomore Albertina Johnson condemned the disruptive students.

“There are some bad kids here,” she said.

Students were sent back into class about 1 p.m. Some students leaned out windows and shouted at reporters who had gathered.

Less than an hour later, as Birch was talking to reporters about how the district could prevent more problems at Southeast, fire alarms blared again. Once more students were evacuated and eventually sent home after fires were discovered on the ground and second floors.

Fires are frequent at Southeast, parents, students and district officials said. Homecoming activities were canceled last fall partly because of repeated fires.

Police said that officers were investigating an incident Thursday in which a male student allegedly raped a female student. The girl reported that she had been attacked in a school restroom, district officials said.

Sophomore Andrew Pruitt and other students expressed anger that a few “ignorant” students give their school a bad reputation.

Last year I taught at a school not too far from this. Administrators kept giving kids second chances, instead of expelling them.

Not too much of a stunner. The KC School District is lousy, especially since the state refused to let the KCSD join with other districts in newly annexed parts of Kansas City (therefore explaning Hickman Mills and Center)

Northeast is a lousy part of town (a lot of Mexican restaurants though)

Southwest had the reputation for doing stuff like that before too

Van Horn (while in Independence) was pretty damned lousy too

At what point do we quit blaming the school? Many of the kids at these schools laugh at any and all consequences that are put in front of them. The school didn't TEACH those kids to rush the police officer, after all.

True.. I guess if anything, it's could be from the bottom up (from the Elementary schools upwards). It's not like kids turn into jerkoffs when they get into 9th grade.

Random stats from here: http://dese.mo.gov/directory/048078.html

The total dropout rate was twice the state rate in 2004. The White dropout rate was four times the state rate. The Hispanic dropout rate was almost twice the state rate.

The graduation rate is consistantly 20 percent under the state rate (in the 60 percent area).

The breakdown of the people living in the district is as follows

White, not Hispanic - 43%

Black - 42%

Hispanic - 10%

(blame the weird census stats for the numbers not adding to 100)

The breakdown of people going to school in the district in 2004

White - 15%

Hispanic - 15%

Black - 68%

Parts of the city have large Asian populations.

Thanks for the stats, BTW.

This was my favorite part:

The 17-year-old said his brother and another student “started boxing” after the students were evacuated onto the front lawn. He said an officer slammed his cousin, who had rushed up to the fight, to the ground. The 17-year-old then rushed up also “because I didn't feel that was right.”

Yeah, why else would there be a South Vietnamese flag on that building at Independence and Prospect? :D

And I've seen a Vietnamese restaurant in one part of KC, closer to downtown, north of 24.

Actually, the Asian population is 2% in the district (both with the student percentage and the population percentage)

I went to see a WWF house show in 2000 at Kemper and in the morning on the way home, I wound up in the wrong part of town. It was like deepest, darkest ghetto. There was a restaurant (closed, as it was 10:00AM on a Sunday) called "New Africa" and it had a sign with a tiny map of the US within a map of Africa. It seemed like it took forever to get to the freeway entrance. Keep in mind that I grew up in the concrete jungle, but every city is different and sometimes you can get blown away for simply being in the wrong neighborhood.

I should have said "relatively large".

Which makes 98%.

ANYHOW...

Even if KCMOSD was allowed to join with the other districts, that wouldn't change how crappy Central, Southeast, and Westport are. It'd just mean that they'd have a few other schools to pull up their average without really needing to address the fundamental problems.

Westport tried to break away as a charter, and was making a little progress, but got caught in a political battle which exposed its mismanagement (as if KCMSD wasn't even more mismanaged).

None of this, however, explains why kids feel like they should be able to set fires, box on the front lawn, and rush the police.

Firefighters Put Out Fire At Southeast High School

Bathroom Trash Bin Catches Fire

POSTED: 2:10 pm CDT April 12, 2005

UPDATED: 4:25 pm CDT April 12, 2005

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- For the second time in one week, firefighters were called to put out a fire at Southeast High School Tuesday.

The fire apparently started in a trash bin inside a bathroom. The smoky fire forced students to evacuate.

Crews quickly put out the fire. No one was hurt.

Firefighters were called to the same school last Friday after four fires were set. A fight also broke out on the lawn, and several students were arrested.

Violence Continues At Southeast High School

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- It's becoming a familiar scene at a Kansas city high school, more violence.

Three out of the last four days, police and firefighters have been called out to Southeast High School.

Wednesday was the latest scene when another fire alarm disrupted classes.

School officials had to evacuate the school for about 20 minutes to allow firefighters to clean up another small bathroom fire.

Last Friday, there were three fires. And a small riot broke out among evacuated students.

Administrators say they've increased security.

Throw the fucking morons out of school and let them engage in the lucrative career in fast food cooking. That is all they're good for.

Clearly the problem here is that the schools have bathrooms in which students can set fires

Ban bathrooms! Shit-holes on the front lawn for everyone!

Southeast High Ups Security Following Arsons

Several Students Suspended, Arrested

POSTED: 9:20 pm CDT April 14, 2005

UPDATED: 9:25 pm CDT April 14, 2005

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Security has been increased and several students were suspended following a series of arsons at Southeast High School, KMBC's Bev Chapman reported Thursday.

Last Friday, four fires were set at the school and a fight broke out among students.

Southeast Principal Teresia Guilyard said that happened in part because three out of five school administrators were out of the building for a meeting Friday, and some students took advantage of the situation.

This week, two more fires were set Tuesday and Wednesday at the school, located at 3500 E. Meyer Blvd.

"The students are equally tired of the chaos and mess that's going on," Guilyard said.

The principal said several changes have already been made, including adding security guards, changing access in the building and having administrators spread out on each floor.

Also, 20 student leaders were nominated to help monitor the school.

"A lot of the kids who are victims of all these events really feel like there's not hope, because it's, like, a daily basis," said Mario Spencer, one of the student leaders.

"This is a safe environment. We're doing everything we can to control a few students that choose to be disruptive," Guilyard said. "Hopefully, we'll get this under control."

So far, about 10 students have been suspended, including five who were arrested Friday after the fight.

Emergency staff meetings were held Sunday and Monday. A meeting with parents is scheduled for April 28.

As a professional educator, whole-heartedly agree.

Kids today get too many "second" chances.

The liberal argument is that you don't want the kids out on the street causing problems. This is one time when it is my sincerest belief that the liberals should shut the fuck up.

I never understood that, "you don't want the kids out on the streets causing problems" as if the only place they cause problems now is in school. Be honest with it, "we don't want to have to deal with the little bastards from 8am to 3pm!"

This school is a mess cause they keep letting the nightmare kids back in. Kick em to the curb and let the students who care get their education. If the parents of the kicked out kids have a problem, tough.
