For that show you couldn't place, the tapings would have been for the WCW SN a day before, and 8 days before, SuperBrawl III.

The WCW TV Title tourney of 1993 started on February 2nd. Those are all first round matches. I'll go with Feb 2nd until otherwise, as I believe Orndorff/Scorpio was the tourney's first match televised.

For the show where Ron Simmons won the title, you have that Jake attacked Sting during an interview. Actually, Sting was doing commentary (since TV cameras were there) for a Rude/Koloff match, which Rude won, and after the match Rude kept beating on Koloff. Sting came in to help Koloff and that's when Jake struck.

I don't believe Rude won that one. The referee never came to, Cactus Jack came down, Sting left for the ring (I have my doubts as to if he was really ever at the "commentary table" since we didn't see him on camera) and while Sting was clearing the ring, Jake came out of the crowd.

I honestly don't buy that any Sid match went 35 minutes. My money is on that particular fan having a few too many to drink that night.

Btw, a friend of mine recently picked up a large amount of Observers from 92 (looking for SMW results) and came across a few instances of Simmons losing the world title on house shows. Two, actually. Once to Rude and once to Vader. And both were in September / October. He e-mailed Meltzer about it and Dave replied by saying that's what his sources said happened. So, really, there's no way to confirm whether or not they're accurate.

This is WCW and weirder things have happened but, with Bill Watts wanting to push Simmons to the moon and the fact these "title changes" were never mentioned on TV (and what's the point of doing a title change at a house show if you can't mention it on TV?), I'm not sure if I buy that information myself.

WCW taped three or four weeks of Main Event tonight.  Possible big news in here:

WCW at the Centennial Center on the campus of Georgia College in

Milledgeville, GA.  Main Event tapings for week before, week of Havoc,

week after leading up to Clash.  Taping on 10/12.

"The Patriot" Todd Champion beats Chic Donovan in a squash.  Good pop.

Todd Champion interview.  Look for a feud w/ Steve Regal.

The Kongs (w/ Fuller, er, I mean Parker) squash two jobbers.

Kongs interview.  Arn/Paul appear and run 'em off.

Arn/Paul interview.

Steve Austin squash/interview.  Parker appears toward end of interview.

Harlem Heat vs. Tom Zenk/Mark Starr.  Heat win when Zenk has one of the Heat pinned and the other comes off middle rope w/ axehandle.

Charlie Norris/Erik Watts squash.  No sign of heel turn.  Norris gets

beat up some (good!)

Steve Austin interview.  Parker appears again toward end.

Arn Anderson/Paul Roma vs. The Kongs.  Horsemen by DQ when Kwan does a runin.  Watts makes the save.

Arn/Paul/Erik interview.

Todd Champion squash.

Ricky Steamboat vs. Steve Regal for TV title.  Steamboat by DQ when

Dundee saves pin from flying bodypress.

Bagwell (w/ Teddy Long) squash.

Todd Champion interview.

Kongs (w/ Kwan) vs. Arn/Paul (w/ Erik Watts).  Kongs win w/ interference from Kwan.  After match Watts and Kwan go at it.  Kwan whips Watts into the ropes and misses a spinning jump kick.  Comes down funny on his leg and staggers.  Watts clotheslines him out of the ring.  Kwan lays down next to ring screaming in pain, his face is red and his eyes are a bit wide.  He was grabbing the loose tarp at the bottom of the ring, and would grab his knee occasionally.  This may be a legit knee injury.

Pee-Wee checks on him, as do the Kongs. Dillenger eventually comes out also and the Kongs help him off.  If Kwan was putting any weight on that knee, he wasn't putting much.  Besides, if he was going to work an

injury, this wouldn't be a particularly good time to do it.  All he did

was stand outside, interfere, then get into it with Watts.  Watts didn't

STF him or anything.  Fact is, Kwan was in control until his spinning

jump kick...

Vader squash (no Harley Race, with WCW belt)

Steve Regal squash.  Regal w/ double-arm suplex.

Vader interview.  Lots of Vader fans ringside (we were 2nd row on the

end next to Schiavone/Zbyszko).

Orndorff/Masked Assassin interview.  At the Clash will be Orndorff vs.

Dustin for the U.S. title, and the Masked Assassin vs. Dusty Rhodes.

Dusty Rhodes interview.  Good pop, but when the pop faded, the ring

announcer was motioning for more noise.  Says "ass" twice.  What family entertainment.

Steve Austin squash (w/ Parker).

Nasty Boys (w/ Missy and the tag straps) squash.

Sting interview.  At the Clash, if I understood right, there will be a

Nasties vs. Sting/Davey Boy match.  Sting picks up two little kids in

Sting paraphenalia ringside and lifts them over the rail and has them

standing in front of him.  He's taking constant heat from the Vader

fans (Main event is Sting-Vader).  After he puts the kids back, he says

to the Vader fans "My sister has more balls then all you Vader fans

combined."  *sigh*, family entertainment, huh?

Main Event: Sting vs. Vader for WCW title.  Sting picks up the house

mike and screams about Vader and says "ass" again.  Match lasts about

three and half or four minutes, and ends w/ Sting being DQed for using a chair repeatedly on Vader outside the ring.  What a friggin' scam.

WCW rolled into the Crystal Chandelier in Kennesaw, GA, again

tonight.  For the first time, I managed to mark out and get

really into the matches.  This may have had something

to do with the fact that Jungle Jim Steele was not there.

Your referee tonight: Matt Burns.  Think about it.

Craig Pittman TLD The Gambler - DUD

During this match, my wife mentioned that Cactus Jack was upstairs

behind the bar talking to a bunch of people.  So I grabbed my printed

copy of Herb's awards [read 'em offline folks, it's a lot easier]

(#1 of 3) and went upstairs.  I told Jack briefly about r.s.p-w and

the awards.

I asked him if he could sign near where he won 2nd

place in Brawler of the Year.  When told he won 2nd, with Vader 1st,

he said, "I probably would've won if I hadn't been out half the

year."  [bTW, it didn't come across as egotistical.]  Anyway,

he didn't sign, but started reading all the awards.  A bunch of

people came up, and he kept saying, "I'll sign in a few minutes."

He was really interested, and kept making comments about different

awards.  I went back and got the other 2 parts, and he read all

of them.

I also pointed out where the 2nd best Angle of the Year

was Vader putting him out.  I said it was a great angle at

first, but that some people thought it kind of went downhill

with the amnesia bit.  He asked, "Are you one of those people?"

in that sort of heelish voice.  I said, "Honestly, yes.  But

I think the mini-movie and taping 13 weeks in Orlando was

worse."  He just sort of laughed.

One thing he asked about was why 1-2-3 Kid won a lot of

awards (as opposed to some of the Japanese wrestlers).  I said

that most of the people who vote don't have access to the Japanese

stuff.  He also asked who Herb was.  I said that Herb was a regular

contributor on r.s.p-w who has run the awards for 4 years.  Finally,

he signed, "To Rick. Bang! Bang! Cactus Jack."

Brian Anderson b. Big Baddy Bradford - DUD

[Hey Rick, I thought you said it was good tonight?]

Flyin' Brian Pillman b. Steve Austin w/ Col. Parker - ***

2 Cold Scorpio & Marcus Alexander Bagwell w/ Teddy Long b.

Paul Orndorff & Paul Roma - **3/4

This one ended with Bagwell having Roma rolled up in an

inside cradle.  While the was distracted, Orndorff

pulled Roma over on top.  When the ref turned around to put

Orndorff out, Scorpio pulled Bagwell on top.  Bagwell

got the pin.

Tommy "Wildfire" Rich b. Z-Man - *1/2

Cactus Jack & Maxx Payne DQ Tex Slazenger & Shanghai Pierce - ****

I'm not sure if I gave it **** because it was really that good

or because it was so much better than most of the stuff

I've seen down there.  It was a great brawl with all 4 men

involved most of the time.  Inside the ring, outside the

ring; chairs busted.  [Funny incident: After a show a couple

of weeks ago where Tex & Shanghai busted a couple of chairs, one

of the guys from Crystal Chandelier came running down to ringside.

He started yelling to one of the WCW crew: "Them damn chairs cost $15

a piece."  He was really pissed that wrestlers were busting up

the chairs.]  Double juice from Cactus & Tex.

Finally, Tex & Shanghai are DQ'd for choking with their rope.  They

brawl after for 5-10 minutes.  It was really intense stuff.

At the end, Shanghai grabbed the bell table and threw it

in the ring at Payne/Jack.  The base of the table separated

from the top and almost did a number on Payne.

Remembering the previous chair incident, I yelled, "That's coming

out of your pay!  Them damn chairs cost $15!"  He looked at me and

yelled, "Shut up you four-eyed faggot!  Come here so I can slap the

shit out of you!"

All in all, this was definitely the best show they've put on

at the Chandelier.  They're taking the next two weeks off

and say they will return in the new year.  Apparently, they

aren't killing house shows just yet.

Man, the Crystal Chandelier must have been paradise if you were fans of the future Godwinns.

Wow! Are you trying to tell me that Zenk didn't really win (insert ridiculous Goldberg-like number that would change by like 20 with every show) matches in a row in 1990 during his "winning streak" that led to the TV Title?

This is disturbing!

I was just wondering if there is an ECW results site like Cawthon's or Sledgehamme's? Becasue if there isn't, I was thinking of starting one.

11/11(?)/94

Well I attended the wcw card held last friday in the Mark of the Quad

Cities in Moline,Illinios. There were about 2,000 people for the first

wcw card held there.  Let me tell you it was not a good card card most

matches were real bad.

It opened up with an appearance by the wcw mascot wildcat willie. He

jumped around and clapped for five minutes or so and made a fool out of

himself.  On to the matches

.

JOHNNY B. BADD VS HONKY TONK MAN

A boring match with Honky doing a lot of stalling.  During the match I

tried to start a honky tonk chant and when I did honky tonk told me to

shut up. Anyway the match ended being a 15 min. time limit draw. Johnny

wanted five more minutes but honky tonk at first agreed then went back

to the dressing room.

KEVIN SULIVAN VS DAVE SULLIVAN

Another boring match with hardly no wrestling some good outside action

though. Kevin was pounding on Dave on the outside with a table. Kevin

pins Dave but decision gets reversed because Kevin is found with a

foreign object. This becomes the theme of the night. During this match I

chat Hogan sucks and a mark in front says " he must not he's the

heavyweight champion"

NASTY BOYS VS ROMA AND JEAN PAUL

No explaination where Orndorff was they didn't even announce he wasn't

there at the beginning of the card. This match had the typical nasty

boys stuff. Not a too bad of a match and in a surprise Roma gets pinned.

I figured Jean Paul would but maybe he has been getting pinned when

Orndorff is there and they didn't want to change the script.

INTERMISSION

I move from my ringside seat to the area where the wrestlers enter

and exit. Wildcat Willie makes another appearance.

GAURDIAN ANGEL VS LORD STEVEN REGAL

Regal was brought to ringside by Harley Race I don't know if this is

going to be permanent or just because this was suppose to be Vader. Race

did say that Vader was hurt so he got Regal to take care of Angel.

Another boring match. Angel wins when Race is on the ring with a chair

and Regal gets hit by it.  The line of the night has to go to Regal.

After his match on his way to the dressing room . I yell Reagel your

terrible. He looks right at me and says" At least I get paid to be

bloody terrible while you just sit in the stands" I have to admit that

was a great comeback and I didn't have anything to say after that.

Steve Austin vs Hacksaw Jim Duggan

Another boring match. Wasn't paying much attention to this match when

I see Austin pin Duggan. They announce Austin as champion and I can't

believe a title change in Moilne. Wow. Then as they raise his hand out

drops a foreign object and the decision goes to duggan.

dUSTIN AND STING VS ARN AND BUNKHOUSE BUCK IN A CAGE

Very disappointing match only lasted ten minutes or so.  Dustin

bulldogged Buck for the win. Ming was banned from ringside even though

he was at arena why he even came I don't know.

Like I said it was a very disappointing card all the way around. I

still had fun though but I was disappointed none the less. I doubt wcw

will come back anytime soon based on the crowd.  By the way later that

night a friend of mine saw Dustin<,Arn,Angel, and Jean Paul all out

together at a local bar. He said theyt were all nice and talked to arn

and dustin.

10/14/94:

For the first time ever, WCW made its way to Salt Lake.  They drew a fairly

decent crowd, so they may even be back.  Since it's likely this is Flair's

farewell tour and was probably my only chance to see Terry Funk live, I gave

it a shot and even managed to get decent seats (2nd row near the entryway).

Following is a brief match rundown.  Warning: I don't do stars.

1.  Johnny B. Badd v. Jean Paul Levesque

Apparently JBB's been put in charge of prepping the ring for WCW events by

applying the glitter-crap.  He did it well.  This was a very un-inspired

match that ended with a clean pin by JBB.

2.  Kevin Sullivan v. Dave Sullivan

I've got to admit that Dave's "#1 Hulkamaniac" act is pretty funny.  The

reverse hand to the ear thing is pretty classic.  Another dud match with

0 in the way of drop kicks, off the middle/top rope moves, foreign objects,

etc.  The end came mercifully quick with a double count out.

3.  Flyin' Brian v. Honkey

This was the only time the whole damn night I got a reaction out of a wrestler.

As HTM was posing on the turnbuckle closest to me, I yelled "Wayne, you'd

be flipping burgers if it wasn't for Terry!".  I got a dirty look and a

"shut up!".  At this point, obviously, it didn't take much to entertain me.

Flyin Brian did no flying.  The last time I saw Pillman live was at

Superbrawl 2 v. Jushin Liger; Pillman v. HTM just doesn't cut it.  After the

usual heel cheating routines, HTM gets a reasonably clean pin.  Not the way

to build Pillman, but apparently getting HTM over for Havoc is more important.

4.  Stars & Stripes v. Pretty #1derful

This was a decent match.  Roma did some decent ring work and Orndorff does a

good job of working the crowd.  I was surprised and impressed to see

Orndorff mocking Hogan with the flexing/ear routine when he had the advantage.

The last time Orndorff was in Salt Lake was to "settle the score" with

Hogan God knows how many years ago.  It must have been coincidence; I can't

believe Orndorff remembered that.  At any rate, after a decent match,

Bagwell got Roma in a small package, but Orndorff rolled Roma on top while the

ref's back was turned.  Orndorff turned to the crowd and the patriot rolled

Bagwell back on top, so Stars & Stripes got the win and Orndorff acted like

he had no idea what happened.  As Orndorff & Roma were heading back to the

dressing room, Gary Capetta was waved over to the entryway.  After a brief

discussion, Capetta announced that Karl Malone was in attendance and in fact

sitting in the entryway.  (For those who, like me, don't follow basketball,

Malone is top dog on the Utah Jazz and has lots of basketball

trophies/medals/ribbons/whatever the hell.)  Orndorff asked Malone who won and

got all upset when Malone said S&S won.  That segment looked spontaneous to

me.  For what it's worth, Malone is a legit. wrestling fan.  He was at the

last card in SLC (the WWF Flair/Piper cage match tour) in street clothes with

a security dude keeping the kids away.

Intermission.  Get yer Official WCW Shit.

5.  Duggan v. Steve Austin

Duggan is over.  He tied with Sting for the 2nd biggest pop of the night.

Sad but true.  Both guys spent more time working the crowd than wrestling.

SSA seems to have been relegated to playing straight man for Duggan.  Duggan

chased SSA around first with the flag, then with the 2x4 for a good 10

minutes.  SSA can't carry Duggan to a decent match.  The end came when SSA

pulled out a pair of brass knucks and hit Duggan while the ref wasn't looking.

SSA covers Duggan and gets the 1-2-3.  Cappetta announces that "the winner

of the match and NEW..." when the ref sees the knucks in the ring and DQs

SSA.  Ya know, it used to be that the ref had to SEE something to call it.

Sigh...  Of course, everyone knew no titles would change this close to a PPV.

6.  Steve Regal v. (this is) Sting

I thought Regal was supposed to be in Japan?  He's not today.  Regal is an

infuriatingly slow worker (I know, not news).  This match had a couple of

pretty good spots.  Sting tried a Stinger Splash while Regal was draped across

the railing; Regal moved and Sting took a pretty good bump.  He also missed a

"traditional" turnbuckle-type splash.  Sting got the clean pin but didn't

seem too thrilled about it.  He left the ring without doing even 1 yell,

got 1/4 of the way down the walkway, then turned around, slid back in the

ring, did 1 yell, and slid right back out.  I don't get the impression he's

a happy camper.  Wonder why...  During this match, a guy came out from the

dressing room and whispered to Capetta for 30 seconds or so, which made me

nervous because the 2 remaining matches were what I paid to see and I didn't

want to hear about any changes.

7.  Funk/Buck/Arn v. Nasties & Dustin

This was far and away the best match of the night wrestling-wise.  Funk did

some pretty good routines, including dumping Capetta's table and tossing

the chairs around.  Interestingly enough, 2 people were yelling "ECW!"

whenever Funk got within earhshot.  Lots of good action, including some

double and triple teaming.  The end came after all 6 men were in the ring

for a good 3-5 minutes and the ref decided to disqualify Funk/Buck/Arn.  I

don't know why it wasn't a DDQ, but I don't care; to get a match that good

that close to a PPV was enough.

8.  Flair v. Hogan

Flair got about 50% boos, 50% cheers, and 1 "Shoot Ric, Shoot!" from me.

Sherri was with him.  Hogan got a HUGE pop; made Sting's reception look

pretty sad.  Hogan came out with Jimmy Hart AND Karl Malone.  Right then,

any hopes I had for a screwjob ending were pretty much dashed.  Flair put on

a good show with all his usual moves.  2 flips, 1 flop, and a Figure 4 (which

was reversed).  Hogan then got the Figure 4 on Flair and did a small package

on Sherri when she ran in.  Malone spanked her a couple of times and Hogan let

her go and released the Figure 4 to do his usual knee smash on Sherri.  Flair

took advantage of the situation and started beating on Hogan and a couple of

minutes later Hogan started the "head shake-finger wag-Hulk up-boot to the

head-Leg Drop of Doom" routine.  Just like that Hogan gets the win with the

most predictible finish in wrestling.  Malone came in to the ring (with a

Hogan tear-away T-shirt) and appeared to genuinely enjoy himself while he

did the usual posing routine with Hogan.  The whole Malone thing didn't

appear to be planned; I'm guessing that's what the guy from the back was

talking to Capetta about.  It's a shame for Flair to go out this way; I was

expecting some kind of screw job ending to convince the marks to buy Havoc.

The way this match ended, I don't see any reason to expect anything

different than the Leg Drop of Doom on the PPV.

Oh, well...  Seeing Funk go nuts, 2 Flair Flips, and 1 Flop made it worth

the $22.  Hope this was interesting.  Back to lurk mode...

I'm finding out some very interesting stuff in looking back at all the ECW results. I had no idea Davey Boy Smith wrestled for them before he first went to WCW.

Davey Boy Smith?

I recall Johnny Smith travelling with Benoit and Jericho into ECW for a few shows, but not Davey Boy Smith.

I think Davey might have done a shot or two for Eastern Championship Wrestling in between his IC Title reign and his first WCW run. He wasn't there during the Extreme Championship Wrestling era.
