Greatest overall booking time periods

Recommended Posts

Reading the ECW thread I see differing views about the WWF of 2000. Well, this is simply a thread for people to put there favourite booking time periods or what they feel is the greatest booing time period of all-time.

I got some periods.

1985-1988

I honestly loved how the wwf did things here. Right up to Savage winning that tournament. Who did Vince have under his wing during this time?

1989 NWA

1992

I liked this year a lot. Simple.

Survivor Series 1995-Good Friends/Better Enemies 1996.

May 1996-December 1996

WCW's greatest main event storytelling of all-time.

Canadian Stampede 1997(or the night the Harts reunited)-RR '99

RR 2000-Judgment Day 2000

SummerSlam 2002-Survivor Series 2002

I have an extreme amount of manly love for 1997 Austin to about Rock's face turn in 1999.

THIS SHUD BEE IN GENRUL WRESLENG OMG~

Just before someone else says it.

And I must agree with Brian, barring Montreal and Owen's treatment afterwards.

Possibly a bit colored since this was the height of my mark days, but I've got a lot of love for WWF from about SummerSlam 95 to about Over the Edge 99, namely for the period from Austin's face turn on.

The WWF writing team from the time Vince bought the promotion untill about 1992 or so mainly consisted of a combination of Pat Patterson, Gerald Brisco, Gorilla Monsoon, Arnold Skaaland, and perhaps a few others. Vince put his input in, and all final decisions always passed through him, but he was mainly concerned with the buisness end of the promotion, and making money with Hogan then he was with whatever was going on with the Undercard at the time.

The reason I made this thread was to see what everybody's viewpoint of what great booking is. It would help people understand why certain people like certain things that they don't like. Knowing what someone thinks is great or what made them watch consistently will give a good measure on what the wwe is now to not make them click with fans. I mean if WrestleMania got all those damn buys it shows that fans ARE out there. There is something broken. It's like the mid 90's when it didn't seem like things were broken, but when things changed a lot of fans starting watching again.

So, Vince had those guys booking until 1992? Why did he change and I suppose the people who took over didn't do that great in 93,93, 94, and 95. I guess in hindsight, wcw his competitor wasn't trailblazing either.

I loved Owen in the nation despite the fact that he didn't get a push.

Pat Patterson was completely 100% in charge from late-1993 untill Vince got off on Steroid Charges in mid-1994. After that, the booking started to shift a bit, Vince took a more active role in creative, and started shifting over to Bill Watts, Jim Cornette, JJ Dillon, etc.

I'm pretty sure George Scott was in there too for a period.

I think that Survivor Series 96-KotR 98 was the best booking period for WWF.

Austin's emergance as a star. The Hart Foundation. HBK and Bret's running feud. DX starting up. Mr McMahon. The ME scene during that time ruled all (save Sid's title runs, but he was never booked as the top star), the booking was logical and flowed well from week to week. After the Kane title win at KotR 98 the booking went to hell when the stupid Kane and Taker feud invaded the ME scene and Russo got firm control.

The booking in 2000 wasn't great, but with Benoit, Jericho, Eddy, Rock, HHH, and others the workrate was. 2000 is really when the troubles of not elevating anyone started. They had Jericho and Benoit (fresh off winning the WCW title) ready to roll but they opted to push Angle adn then cut his legs out from under him with the love triangle feud.

WCW's greatest main event storytelling of all-time.

I think the first 6 months of 1992 may get that distinction.

"RR 2000-Judgment Day 2000"

I hate it when people do this. Just because KOTR 2000 wasn't a very good PPV, they claim "WWF was great in 2000 from Rumble to Judgment Day."

The booking/shows was still very good at this time, after KOTR.

- We had Benoit given a main event push to face Rock.

- Angle ruining Taker's bike and riding the scooter around.

- E & C Title 2nd reign begins.

- Right to Censor begins, and it was a hot angle when it did.

- KURT ANGLE KISSING STEPHANIE MCMAHON.

- A very underrated T & A Vs. Hard Boys feud. Great feud. Why? Led to a very good mixed six-person tag at Fully Loaded. Got Trish a lot of heat and face time on TV. Put Lita over more, and she was mega-over back then. Through a passable power team in their with quick over face team, and they worked good matches together.

- Big Show gets sent to OVW.

- Triple H "training" Trish, caught by Stephanie repeatedly.

- Val Venis given push as serious IC champ.

- Jericho and Benoit go at it again, 2/3 Falls match buildup.

- Raven brought in at Philly PPV.

- Austin returns storyline.

- Steve Blackman: Hardcore Champion was over.
