Guest gthureson Report post Posted May 21, 2005 Somehow this isn't as compelling a topic. Everyone expected Wayne Gretzky to be amazing. He was. The end. Actually, there were plenty of doubts about Gretzky until he won a Stanley Cup. Going into Junior hockey, he was too small, too slow and was going to get demolished by the tough guys in the OHL. Going into the WHA, he was too small, too slow. Sure, he put up gawdy numbers against junior players, but lots of guys do that. Going into the NHL, he was too small, too slow. His fancy moves may have worked against the second-rate WHA guys, but top-flight NHL players were going to crush him into the boards and shut him down easily. Remember Jim Craig --Jim freaking Craig -- saying he was going to have Gretzky in his pocket when he turned pro after the '80 Olympics. After a few seasons, Gretzky could put up huge numbers, but his team couldn't win anything. Got bounced in the first round, got bounced in the second round, knocked out in the first round by the Kings (Miracle on Manchester), then swept in the finals by the Islanders. Wasn't until the Oilers destroyed the Islanders in the finals the consensus was finally, "You know, I guess this Gretzky guys is the real deal. He can score, he can pass, and his team can win the whole thing." So I wouldn't say everyone expected Wayne to be amazing.
