Ring of Honor 7.23.05 "The Homecoming" results

1) EL GENERICO over KEVIN STEEN with a backslide into a pin

Gary Michael Cappetta came out and told the crowd that The Embassy would be fired from ROH if they kept treating Jade Chung abusively.

Nana, Jade, and Mike Kruel came out.

Nana dressed Jade in a bedsheet, because he said no one was allowed to see her body anymore.

Nana then attached a retractable dog collar and leash to Jade, which he would jerk if she stepped away from him. The whole time Nana made a big deal about staying in the rules that ROH had given him, all the while smiling, because it was clear that he was bending them and using them to his advantage.

2) SPANKY over DERANGED, NIGEL MCGUINNESS, and AZRIEAL when he pinned DERANGED

3) BJ WHITMER & JIMMY JACOBS over THE CARNAGE CREW of LOC & DEVITO to become the 14th ROH Tag Team Champions

Also, ROH returns to Philadelphia on Sunday, October 2nd.

4) The ROTTWEILERS OF HOMICIDE, LOW KI, and RICKY REYES over SAMOA JOE, JAY LETHAL, and JAMES GIBSON when HOMICIDE used a chain to KO GIBSON and get the pin

5) THE RING CREW EXPRESS of DUNN & MARCOS v. DAVEY ANDREWS & SHANE HAGADORN never began, as the RCE was attacked and destroyed by THE CARNAGE CREW!

ALEX SHELLEY came to the ring and talk about his partner. He said that he was not selling out, by buying in!

The EMBASSY's music hit and they made their way to the ring.

6) THE EMBASSY of ALEX SHELLEY & FAST EDDIE VEGAS over GENERATION NEXT of AUSTIN ARIES & RODERICK STRONG when JIMMY RAVE came out and nailed ARIES with a chair behind the back of the referee

AJ Styles hit the ring and the Philly Street Fight is underway!

7) JIMMY RAVE over AJ STYLES with the Rave Clash in a Philadelphia Street Fight...The entire Embassy beat Styles down to allow Rave to hit his finish. After the match, Strong and Aries tried to make the save, but were unsuccessful

8) CM PUNK fought CHRISTOPHER DANIELS to a 60 MINUTE DRAW in a Ring of Honor World Title Match...post-match, Samoa Joe and James Gibson came out and cut promos on Punk building to possible future matches.

Wow, a draw? Didn't actually see that coming. Any news from anyone at the event how good it was?

From the ROH boards:

CM Punk vs. Chris Daniels

Hmmm...I'm not sure what to say about this match. It really just wasn't that good in my opinion. There were a lot of comic remarks from Punk towards Green Lantern Fan and a girl sitting next to him that were really funny. Every time Daniels punched Punk everyone would say "Yay," and Punk was booed when he punched Daniels. This was fun the first few times the exchange happened but they milked it like 8 times. A funny spot came when Punk hit an armdrag (I think), paused and then said "yay" after the crowd booed. My main problem with this match was that it never kicked into high gear. They did the same spots over and over and over again, obviously trying to kill time. Eventually, Punk hits a dropkick on the top rope....on the referee!! Daniels got a cover, pinned Punk for like an 8 count, but the ref was out (pattern, anyone??). Punk then got like a 13 count. Seems really improbable that they would score pinfalls ONLY when the ref was down, especially in a match like this. The last 5 minutes or so were really good, but everyone knew that Punk would win, and it took a lot of the excitement out of the match. I think this storyline is dragging out way too long and is making the title matches a lot less exciting than they should be. The action itself wasn't even that good for the most part, as they mostly relied on like two different resthold sequences, and back and forth punching for the yays and boos. Maybe it was just me, but it didn't seem like anyone was buying the possibility that Daniels would win, or buying the plausibility of the nearfalls.

This surprises me, because I thought a match between these two would exceed all expectations.

The show was a lot better than most people are giving it credit for.

The Punk vs. Daniels match was really good and I had NO expectations going in and even less with it being a 60 minute match. It was very good though with good Punk stalling early on and it never broke down into your move/my move. I don't get the crowd heat complaints for this match (or the whole show). Philly crowds generally suck and the last couple of shows have been dead quiet for almost everything. In this match, there wasn't incredible heat for the first 20 minutes, but there also wasn't nearly the dead silence that accompanied a lot of matches in Philly. This will be one of the deals where you don't even notice it on tape and it is mainly just a result of where you were sitting. The crowd was actually really good for most of the match, booing the heel and cheering the face.

The fact that it never "kicked into high gear" was one of the reasons it was good. I think "kicked into high gear" is the wrong way to phrase it, but I understand what the guy who said that meant. They never went all out hitting a bunch of moves at the end or going 100 miles an hour. The match was much better for that though. The match is a ton better than anyone is giving it credit for.

The crowd was a million times better than its been at the recent Philly shows so I don't quite get that. They were pretty loud throughout and responded to some angles according to face/heel which is nearly impossible there.

Overall, I really enjoyed the show and every match met or exceded my expectations except Steen/Generico and I had extremely low expectations of that to begin with. The six man was very good, Rave vs. Punk is going to be great on tape, and despite what you might read, Daniels vs. Punk was very good and easily better than the first Punk vs. Joe draw.

I can appreciate hour long matchs, it just seems weird that a feud with this kind of back story that would lead one to believe it was going to be more of a brawl, turns into an hour long draw.

I do realise however, at the moment we're only seeing a small part of the greater picture. A few months down the line when all has been revealed as to where the Punk angle is going and what the blow off with Daniels will be everyone will be singing the praises of this.

I wasn't really expecting anything here, but my complaint was that it was obvious they were going to a draw 10 minutes in. Aside from the occasional Fallen Angel and the Yay/Boo stuff with the punches, the heat that should've been there just wasn't there.

I guess that's one of my complaints as well. I never really could feel the hate Daniels had for Punk in the match.

Rave v. AJ was awesome though

All I can say is that it must have been where we were sitting. After every ROH show, there are always some reports that claim matches/the show had great heat while other reports say no heat. It usually boils down to people having differing opinions based on where they sit or who they sit around. The heat seemed more than fine to me. The Boo/Yay stuff is 100 times better than the dumb dueling chants. Plus, there was never a period of dead silence which isn't something that can be said about most Philly ROH shows.

We disagree here because I thought Daniels did a good job getting that hate across. You have to remember, that he had to convey two stories. He had to get across his dislike for Punk and his desire to win the title. Daniels had two motives in that match. One was to extact some revenge and the other was to defeat Punk on behalf of ROH. It wouldn't have been appropriate to work a brawl any more than it would have been appropriate to work a match based face/face match. They did something in between which was the right call. Watch it again on tape because I noticed Daniels do a lot of things that got across his hate from his reactions to Punk stalling, to the stuff on the outside, to his body part work.

Rave v. AJ was awesome though

Agreed. I was worried AJ was going to work his usual TNA street fight which is more big move oriented instead of an actual brawl. He ended up not even using many (if any) of his signiture moves which was a surprise and the right move for a match like that.

^ c&p from xSarahx's post from the ROH boards ...

See, I think it makes perfect sense for a guy to get pinned for that long when the ref is out. He knows he's not going to have fall counted against him, so why use the energy to kick out? If anything, having a guy just laying on you would be better than having him kick the crap out of you, so why not just lie there, try to regroup after whatever the guy did to put you into that vulnerable situation, and then just kick out when you hear the ref's hand slap the mat for the 2nd time?
