Guest xSarahx Report post Posted July 30, 2005 Tonight was the first night that I've worked on ring crew for a local promotion and I was just wondering if anyone here has done it before. What was your experience/ how long did you do it?
Guest jcmar3x Report post Posted July 30, 2005 My cousin Mike and I started going to local Indy shows in 1999 as a chance to break into the business (we had been doing backyard crap starting in 1997). After talking to talent during Intermission we got introduced to the local promoter who was always looking for extra help. We did ring crew for about six months, and when the Ring Announcer for one of the shows no showed, I got my chance to do announcing on the show (I has aspirations of managing, not wrestling). They loved my mic work and I got the slot, while my cousin did ring crew as well as camera work for their events. It was definitely a good expierence when you're breaking into The Business it's an easy way to get in with the boys and join the lockeroom. Because at some point EVERYONE has had to break down the damn ring.
the max 0 Report post Posted July 30, 2005 Back when my friend worked in the NE area, I visited him for a week or so. I went to wrestling school with him and helped him with the ring. We woke up at 6a, drove to the school/warehouse, disassembled the ring, loaded it onto the truck ourselves and drove it to the Elks Lodge. We had the base set up by the time everyone else arrived. As far as the show, I got the opportunity to referee a few matches. Since I had previously taken basic classes with the guy who trained my friend, I got the opportunity to do a little extra as far as the matches that I reffed. I played the stupid referee and allowed myself to be distracted by a heel manager and I worked with two guys for their single match. It ended up that I somehow accidentally caused the face guy to lose, so he clotheslined me. I still have it on tape. I sold it like death. We stayed after the show, disassembled the ring, drove it back to the warehouse and dumped it in the space. By the time we got home, it was almost 3a. The Kid 0 Report post Posted July 30, 2005 I've helped a bit setting up and tearing down the ring. We normally have enough help that it isn't even "needed".
JST 0 Report post Posted July 31, 2005 Been there and still do that on occasion. What do you believe is the most annoying part of the job? I always hate tightening the damn ropes (I can never get the damn thing right) and putting the pads on the turnbuckles (not the corner, but the thing that joins the corner and the post). Guest xSarahx Report post Posted July 31, 2005 What do you believe is the most annoying part of the job?<{POST_SNAPBACK}> Tightening the ropes was a bitch, it was either too much slack or one side was tighter than another or something that wasn't right. But my least favorite part was getting those damn long metal bars that connect the ring posts to fit right. Maybe it was just that particular ring but they sure didn't want to connect correctly. And they are really heavy to try and hold up while someone is trying to get it to fit.
